High-Performance PVC Gel for Adaptive Micro-Lenses with Variable Focal Length.

    Get PDF
This paper presents a bio-inspired adaptive micro-lens with electrically tunable focus made of non-ionic high-molecular-weight polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gel. The optical device mimics the design of the crystalline lens and ciliary muscle of the human eye. It consists of a plano-convex PVC gel micro-lens on Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) glass, confined with an annular electrode operating as an artificial ciliary muscle. Upon electrical activation, the electroactive adhesive force of the PVC gel is exerted on the annular anode electrode, which reduces the sagittal height of the plano-convex PVC gel lens, resulting in focal length variation of the micro-lens. The focal length increases from 3.8 mm to 22.3 mm as the applied field is varied from 200 V/mm to 800 V/mm, comparable to that of the human lens. The device combines excellent optical characteristics with structural simplicity, fast response speed, silent operation, and low power consumption. The results show the PVC gel micro-lens is expected to open up new perspectives on practical tunable optics

Make Prompts Adaptable: Bayesian Modeling for Vision-Language Prompt Learning with Data-Dependent Prior

Recent Vision-Language Pretrained (VLP) models have become the backbone for many downstream tasks, but they are utilized as frozen model without learning. Prompt learning is a method to improve the pre-trained VLP model by adding a learnable context vector to the inputs of the text encoder. In a few-shot learning scenario of the downstream task, MLE training can lead the context vector to over-fit dominant image features in the training data. This overfitting can potentially harm the generalization ability, especially in the presence of a distribution shift between the training and test dataset. This paper presents a Bayesian-based framework of prompt learning, which could alleviate the overfitting issues on few-shot learning application and increase the adaptability of prompts on unseen instances. Specifically, modeling data-dependent prior enhances the adaptability of text features for both seen and unseen image features without the trade-off of performance between them. Based on the Bayesian framework, we utilize the Wasserstein Gradient Flow in the estimation of our target posterior distribution, which enables our prompt to be flexible in capturing the complex modes of image features. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on benchmark datasets for several experiments by showing statistically significant improvements on performance compared to existing methods. CHANGES IN MUSCLE ACTIVITY PATTERN IN LOWER LIMB EXTREMITY DURING PEDALLING BY SADDLE HEIGHT

As a preliminary study for a preferential saddle height for cyclist, muscle activity pattern in lower limb extremity between preferred and higher saddle height during pedalling was compared. Seven cyclists performed 3 min sub-maximal pedalling under two different saddle heights. Range of motion (ROM) of muscle length, onset-timing of muscle activity, and amount of muscle activity in biceps femoris (BF), vastus lateralis (VL), gastrocnemius (GM), and tibialis anterior muscles (TA) were used to compare changes in muscle activity pattern due to saddle height. Results showed that there was a significant difference in ROM of VL and that of TA (

Cigarette Smoking and Risk of Lung Cancer in Korean Men: The Seoul Male Cancer Cohort Study

    Get PDF
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Korea. The aim of this study was to estimate lung cancer risk of cigarette smoking in Korean men by a 10-yr follow-up prospective cohort study using the primary databases. The number of subjects was 14,272 men, who had full information of smoking habits among participants in the Seoul Male Cancer Cohort Study (SMCC). Total 125,053 person-years were calculated by determining the number of days from the start of follow-up, January 1, 1993, until the date of lung cancer diagnosis, death from another cause, or the end of follow-up, December 31, 2002, followed by converting the number of days to years. The information of outcome was obtained by the database of Korea Central Cancer Registry, Seoul Regional Cancer Registry, and Korea Statistical Office. The relative risk (RR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) values of smoking were calculated using Cox proportional hazards regression stratified on potential confounders. During the follow-up periods, 78 cases of lung cancer occurred. The cigarette smoking is the major risk factor and increases the 4.18-fold risk of lung cancer in Korean men. In order to control lung cancer, intervention of quitting smoking is needed

Application of motion correction using 3D autoregressive model in kinect-based telemedicine

    Get PDF
In telemedicine, where the convergence of different types of medical treatment occurs, it is very important to establish credibility regarding the mutual communication between patients and medical workers by acquiring and sharing more accurate data. For rehabilitation treatment in particular, where motion data are required, auxiliary equipment such as a Kinect sensor is being more widely used. This study proposes a methodology for improving the motion recognition rate by compensating the noise from a Kinect sensor using a 3D auto regressive model. Moreover, this study investigates the methods applied for vitalizing the area of telemedicine under this particular trend

Polymorphisms in Genes That Regulate Cyclosporine Metabolism Affect Cyclosporine Blood Levels and Clinical Outcomes in Patients Who Receive Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

    Get PDF
In patients who received allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), we investigated the correlations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes that regulate cyclosporine metabolism and clinical outcomes. All patients received sibling-matched HSCT. DNA samples of patients and donors were analyzed for 4 SNPs: MDR1 +1236C>T (rs1128503), +2677G>T>A (rs2032582), +3435C>T (rs1045642), and CYP3A5 +6986G>A (rs776746). A total of 156 patients (median age 40 years) were analyzed. Nineteen patients received HSCT for nonmalignant disease. The CYP3A5 +6986AA genotype was associated with a high cyclosporine blood level after transplantation. However, this genotype was not related to any particular clinical outcome. In contrast, the MDR1 +1236C>T SNP was correlated with specific clinical outcomes. When neither the donor nor the recipient had the CC genotype of MDR1 +1236, patients had lower creatinine levels (P < .001) and less transplantation-related mortality (TRM) (P = .012). These patients also showed longer overall survival (OS) in both univariate (P = .003) and multivariate (P = .003) analyses. Although the CYP3A5 +6986AA genotype was correlated with a high blood cyclosporine concentration, lack of the MDR1 +1236CC genotype in both the donor and recipient was correlated with less TRM and a longer OS in patients who received allogeneic HSCT

Eikenella Corrodens Cervical Spinal Epidural Abscess Induced by a Fish Bone

Cervical spinal epidural abscess, caused by fish bone injury and a secondary infection by Eikenella Corrodens which is part of the normal flora, has not been reported. A 72-yr-old man came to the hospital with pain in his posterior neck and both shoulders for 2 months. He also was experiencing weakness on his right side for 3 days. A fish bone had been stuck in his throat for about 2 months. Neurological examination revealed right hemiparesis, hypesthesia on the left extremities and neck stiffness. Laboratory findings showed an elevated ESR/CRP and leukocytosis, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a retropharyngeal abscess and cervical myelitis. The patient was treated with emergency surgical decompression and antibiotics. A fish bone was removed from the C3-C4 intervertebral disc space. In the culture of chocolate blood agar and 5% sheep blood agar plate, E. corrodens was detected as a causative organism
