Effective nonlinear optical properties of composite media of graded spherical particles

We have developed a nonlinear differential effective dipole approximation (NDEDA), in an attempt to investigate the effective linear and third-order nonlinear susceptibility of composite media in which graded spherical inclusions with weak nonlinearity are randomly embedded in a linear host medium. Alternatively, based on a first-principles approach, we derived exactly the linear local field inside the graded particles having power-law dielectric gradation profiles. As a result, we obtain also the effective linear dielectric constant and third-order nonlinear susceptibility. Excellent agreement between the two methods is numerically demonstrated. As an application, we apply the NDEDA to investigate the surface plasma resonant effect on the optical absorption, optical nonlinearity enhancement, and figure of merit of metal-dielectric composites. It is found that the presence of gradation in metal particles yields a broad resonant band in the optical region, and further enhances the figure of merit.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure

First long-term study of particle number size distributions and new particle formation events of regional aerosol in the North China Plain

Atmospheric particle number size distributions (size range 0.003–10 μm) were measured between March 2008 and August 2009 at Shangdianzi (SDZ), a rural research station in the North China Plain. These measurements were made in an attempt to better characterize the tropospheric background aerosol in Northern China. The mean particle number concentrations of the total particle, as well as the nucleation, Aitken, accumulation and coarse mode were determined to be 1.2 ± 0.9 × 104, 3.6 ± 7.9 × 103, 4.4 ± 3.4 × 103, 3.5 ± 2.8 × 103 and 2 ± 3 cm−3, respectively. A general finding was that the particle number concentration was higher during spring compared to the other seasons. The air mass origin had an important effect on the particle number concentration and new particle formation events. Air masses from northwest (i.e. inner Asia) favored the new particle formation events, while air masses from southeast showed the highest particle mass concentration. Significant diurnal variations in particle number were observed, which could be linked to new particle formation events, i.e. gas-to-particle conversion. During particle formation events, the number concentration of the nucleation mode rose up to maximum value of 104 cm−3. New particle formation events were observed on 36% of the effective measurement days. The formation rate ranged from 0.7 to 72.7 cm−3 s−1, with a mean value of 8.0 cm−3 s−1. The value of the nucleation mode growth rate was in the range of 0.3–14.5 nm h−1, with a mean value of 4.3 nm h−1. It was an essential observation that on many occasions the nucleation mode was able to grow into the size of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) within a matter of several hours. Furthermore, the new particle formation was regularly followed by a measurable increase in particle mass concentration and extinction coefficient, indicative of a high abundance of condensable vapors in the atmosphere under study

Hybridization between Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa assulta (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): development and morphological characterization of F1 hybrids

    Get PDF
Reciprocal hybridizations between Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) and Helicoverpa assulta (Guenee) were studied. The cross between females of H. armigera and males of H. assulta yielded only fertile males and sterile individuals lacking an aedeagus, valva or ostium bursae. A total of 492 larvae of the F1 generation were obtained and 374 of these completed larval development and pupated. Only 203 pupae were morphologically normal males, the remaining 171 pupae were malformed. Larvae and pupae that gave rise to morphologically abnormal adults exhibited longer development times. Sterility was not only associated with malformed external sex organs, but also a range of abnormalities of the internal reproductive system: (i) loss of internal reproductive organs, (ii) with one to three copies of an undeveloped bursa copulatrix; or (iii) with one or two undeveloped testes. Normal male hybrid adults showed higher flight activity in comparison with males of both species. In contrast, the cross between females of H. assulta and males of H. armigera yielded morphologically normal offspring (80 males and 83 females). The interaction of the Z-chromosome from H. assulta with autosomes from H. armigera might result in morphological abnormalities found in hybrids and backcrosses, and maternal-zygotic incompatibilities might contribute to sex bias attributed to hybrid inviability

Realistic Elbow Flesh Deformation Based on Anthropometrical Data for Ergonomics Modeling

    Get PDF
The human model for ergonomic simulation has improved in terms of its reliability and appearance and yet there seems to be less attention paid to create a realistic and accurate flesh deformation around the joint. This study, a part of ongoing research, proposes a combination of manual and automatic (3D body scanner) measurements to create a database for flesh deformation prediction i.e. flesh deformation area and cross section changes, around the elbow joint. The database consists of two race groups i.e., Caucasian and Asian (23 subjects, 11 males and 12 females), which were carefully chosen to represent a variety of height and body type. The prediction results for both flesh deformation area and cross section changes are discussed as well as their relevance for the next stage of the study

    In a sample of 58 million J/ψJ/\psi events collected with the BES II detector, the process J/ψ→γηc\psi\to\gamma\eta_c is observed in five different decay channels: γK+K−π+π−\gamma K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-, γπ+π−π+π−\gamma\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-, γK±KS0π∓\gamma K^\pm K^0_S \pi^\mp (with KS0→π+π−K^0_S\to\pi^+\pi^-), γϕϕ\gamma \phi\phi (with ϕ→K+K−\phi\to K^+K^-) and γppˉ\gamma p\bar{p}. From a combined fit of all five channels, we determine the mass and full-width of ηc\eta_c to be mηc=2977.5±1.0(stat.)±1.2(syst.)m_{\eta_c}=2977.5\pm1.0 ({stat.})\pm1.2 ({syst.}) MeV/c2c^2 and Γηc=17.0±3.7(stat.)±7.4(syst.)\Gamma_{\eta_c} = 17.0\pm3.7 ({stat.})\pm7.4 ({syst.}) MeV/c2c^2.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures and 4 table. Cross sections for e+e- to hadons, pi+pi- J/Psi, and mu+mu- have been measured in the vicinity of the Psi(2S) resonance using the BESII detector operated at the BEPC. The Psi(2S) total width; partial widths to hadrons, pi+pi- J/Psi, muons; and corresponding branching fractions have been determined to be Gamma(total)= (264+-27) keV; Gamma(hadron)= (258+-26) keV, Gamma(mu)= (2.44+-0.21) keV, and Gamma(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (85+-8.7) keV; and Br(hadron)= (97.79+-0.15)%, Br(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (32+-1.4)%, Br(mu)= (0.93+-0.08)%, respectively.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

Development and Characterization of Neutralizing Antibodies Against Zaire Ebolavirus Glycoprotein and Protein 40

    Get PDF
Background/Aims: Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are presently the most promising treatment against Ebola virus disease (EVD), and cocktail of two or more antibodies likely confers protection through complementary mechanisms. Zaire Ebolavirus (EBOV) glycoprotein (GP) and viral protein 40 (VP40) are targets for designing neutralizing antibodies. Currently, the antiviral therapeutics of mAb-cocktails are still limited solely to anti-GP antibodies, there is no Abs cocktail against Zaire EBOV GP and VP40, which both have important interactions with host cellular membrane. Methods: We used hybridoma technology to produce anti-Zaire EBOV GP mAb against GP receptor binding domain, and anti-Zaire EBOV VP40 mAbs against the N-terminal domain, the C-terminal domain, respectively; synthesized Zaire EBOV transcription and replication competent virus like particles (trVLPs), which model even all aspects of the EBOV life cycles in order to evaluate the anti-viral effect of mAbs. Then, we characterized the anti- Zaire EBOV trVLPs effect of anti-GP and VP40 mAbs in vitro by real time-PCR, immunofluorescence assay and western blot analysis. Results: Our results demonstrate that anti-GP or anti-VP40 mAbs effectively inhibit trVLPs replication. The cocktails of anti-GP and anti-VP40 mAbs, or between anti-VP40 mAbs, had synergistic anti-trVLPs effect. Meanwhile, the detailed DNA and amino acid sequences of the mAbs were checked. Conclusion: The study verifies neutralizing efficacy of anti-GP or anti-VP40 mAb, report promising cocktail of anti-GP and anti-VP40 mAb, or cocktail of two anti-VP40 mAbs. To our knowledge, this is the first account to report the important anti-viral effect of cocktails of anti-GP and anti-VP40 mAbs in vitro

    New data are presented on J/ψ→ωK+K−J/\psi \to \omega K^+K^- from a sample of 58M J/ψJ/\psi events in the upgraded BES II detector at the BEPC. There is a conspicuous signal for f0(1710)→K+K−f_0(1710) \to K^+K^- and a peak at higher mass which may be fitted with f2(2150)→KKˉf_2(2150) \to K\bar K. From a combined analysis with ωπ+π−\omega \pi ^+ \pi ^- data, the branching ratio BR(f0(1710)→ππ)/BR(f0(1710)→KKˉ)BR(f_0(1710)\to\pi\pi)/BR(f_0(1710) \to K\bar K) is <0.11< 0.11 at the 95% confidence level.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures.
