    Bike Lane Design: the Context Sensitive Approach

    In these days of increasing congestion on roads, bicycles continue to provide a valuable contribution to mobility in Europe. Their relatively small size and low cost enable them to blend efficiently into in the traffic flow while needing less space compared to other vehicles. However, cyclists form one of the most vulnerable groups of road users. So the design of safe infrastructures for all travellers categories, included the cyclists, becomes a primary requirement. To obtain these results, a Context Sensitive Design approach is a very useful tool. In this way, in fact, it is possible to examine a project or existing road, reporting its crash potential and safety performances and detecting its deficiencies, taking into consideration communities and lands which it passes through. In this paper the authors, starting from results collected on a bike lane placed in Rimini, provide useful results for designers, construction and maintenance contractors, in order to obtain safe bike lanes

    Finding and counting vertex-colored subtrees

    The problems studied in this article originate from the Graph Motif problem introduced by Lacroix et al. in the context of biological networks. The problem is to decide if a vertex-colored graph has a connected subgraph whose colors equal a given multiset of colors MM. It is a graph pattern-matching problem variant, where the structure of the occurrence of the pattern is not of interest but the only requirement is the connectedness. Using an algebraic framework recently introduced by Koutis et al., we obtain new FPT algorithms for Graph Motif and variants, with improved running times. We also obtain results on the counting versions of this problem, proving that the counting problem is FPT if M is a set, but becomes W[1]-hard if M is a multiset with two colors.     Not All Children with Under-Control Asthma are Controlled

    Subclinical lung function alterations can sometimes be discovered in asthmatic patients under clinical control. This study aimed to identify the burden of asthmatic children with subclinical airways abnormalities who may benefit from an adjustment in asthma therapy. 134 6-to-17-year-old asthmatic children were enrolled. Of them, 98 presented apparently under clinical control disease and all performed spirometry before and after bronchodilation: 17 (17.3%) had a positive bronchodilation test, in addition to significantly lower lung function indexes as compared to those with under-control asthma who had a negative bronchodilation test. These patients were randomized and re-evaluated: patients (n=8) receiving an adjustment in their therapy showed an improvement in lung function tests and quality of life indexes as compared to 7 without therapy adjustment. In conclusion, a substantial number of apparently-under-control asthmatic children show airways alterations that can be improved by adjusting their therapy, which also seems to enhance their quality of life

    Exact Lattice Supersymmetry: the Two-Dimensional N=2 Wess-Zumino Model

    We study the two-dimensional Wess-Zumino model with extended N=2 supersymmetry on the lattice. The lattice prescription we choose has the merit of preserving {\it exactly} a single supersymmetric invariance at finite lattice spacing aa. Furthermore, we construct three other transformations of the lattice fields under which the variation of the lattice action vanishes to O(ga2)O(ga^2) where gg is a typical interaction coupling. These four transformations correspond to the two Majorana supercharges of the continuum theory. We also derive lattice Ward identities corresponding to these exact and approximate symmetries. We use dynamical fermion simulations to check the equality of the massgaps in the boson and fermion sectors and to check the lattice Ward identities. At least for weak coupling we see no problems associated with a lack of reflection positivity in the lattice action and find good agreement with theory. At strong coupling we provide evidence that problems associated with a lack of reflection positivity are evaded for small enough lattice spacing.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures.     Superconformal constraints for QCD conformal anomalies

    Anomalous superconformal Ward identities and commutator algebra in N = 1 super-Yang-Mills theory give rise to constraints between the QCD special conformal anomalies of conformal composite operators. We evaluate the superconformal anomalies that appear in the product of renormalized conformal operators and the trace anomaly in the supersymmetric spinor current and check the constraints at one-loop order. In this way we prove the universality of QCD conformal anomalies, which define the non-diagonal part of the anomalous dimension matrix responsible for scaling violations of exclusive QCD amplitudes at the next-to-leading order.Comment: 30 pages, 2 figures, LaTe

    Efficacy and fertility outcomes of levonorgestrel-releasing intra-uterine system treatment for patients with atypical complex hyperplasia or endometrial cancer: A retrospective study

    Objective: To investigate the efficacy of levonorgestrel-releasing intra-uterine system (LNG-IUS) treatment in patients affected by atypical complex hyperplasia/endometrial cancer (ACH/EC) wishing to preserve their fertility and to present fertility outcomes of those patients who actively tried to conceive. Methods: Data of consecutive women with ACH/EC who underwent fertility-sparing treatment using LNG-IUS were retrospectively evaluated. Results: Overall, 48 patients and the mean (\ub1standard deviation) length of follow-up was 82.6\ub147.2 months. Among patients with ACH, 25/28 (89.3%) had a complete response (CR), 2/28 (7.1%) had a partial response (PR) and 1/28 (3.6%) had a progressive disease (PD). Mean (\ub1standard deviation) time to CR was 6.7\ub14.0 months. Among patients with G1 EC, 13/16 (81.3%) had a CR, 1/16 (6.3%) had a PR and 2/16 (12.5%) had a PD. Mean (\ub1standard deviation) time to CR was 5.0\ub12.9 months. Among patients with G2 EC, 3/4 (75.0%) had a CR and 1/4 (25.0%) had a PD. Mean (\ub1standard deviation) time to CR was 4.0\ub10 months. Only 19 (39.6%) patients who had CR actually attempted to conceive. Eleven (57.9%) women tried to conceive naturally while 8 (42.1%) women underwent an in vitro fertilization (IVF). Fourteen (73.7%) patients wishing to conceive achieved a pregnancy (6 spontaneously and 8 through IVF). Conclusions: Fertility-sparing treatment of patient with ACH/EC with LNG-IUS achieves high regression rates and good fertility outcomes. Future larger multi-institutional studies should be designed to confirm these preliminary findings

    On the Structure of the Observable Algebra of QCD on the Lattice

    The structure of the observable algebra OΛ{\mathfrak O}_{\Lambda} of lattice QCD in the Hamiltonian approach is investigated. As was shown earlier, OΛ{\mathfrak O}_{\Lambda} is isomorphic to the tensor product of a gluonic C∗C^{*}-subalgebra, built from gauge fields and a hadronic subalgebra constructed from gauge invariant combinations of quark fields. The gluonic component is isomorphic to a standard CCR algebra over the group manifold SU(3). The structure of the hadronic part, as presented in terms of a number of generators and relations, is studied in detail. It is shown that its irreducible representations are classified by triality. Using this, it is proved that the hadronic algebra is isomorphic to the commutant of the triality operator in the enveloping algebra of the Lie super algebra sl(1/n){\rm sl(1/n)} (factorized by a certain ideal).Comment: 33 page
