Automated Analysis of MUTEX Algorithms with FASE
In this paper we study the liveness of several MUTEX solutions by
representing them as processes in PAFAS s, a CCS-like process algebra with a
specific operator for modelling non-blocking reading behaviours. Verification
is carried out using the tool FASE, exploiting a correspondence between
violations of the liveness property and a special kind of cycles (called
catastrophic cycles) in some transition system. We also compare our approach
with others in the literature. The aim of this paper is twofold: on the one
hand, we want to demonstrate the applicability of FASE to some concrete,
meaningful examples; on the other hand, we want to study the impact of

Priorità di intervento forestale per la mitigazione di fenomeni di dissesto idrogeologico in Sicilia
Secondo i dati dell’INFC l’indice di boscosità della Sicilia è fra i più bassi d’Italia. Nel Piano Forestale della Regione Sicilia (PFR), in corso di approvazione, viene definita la necessità di ampliare la superficie forestale con l’obiettivo di ridurre la frammentazione delle aree forestali esistenti. A tal fine il PFR individua aree ecologicamente omogenee, utili per l’individuazione delle specie da utilizzare in nuovi rimboschimenti e/o impianti di arboricoltura da legno, e aree a priorità d’intervento, fornendo indirizzi per la realizzazione degli interventi nonché altre indicazioni tecniche e programmatiche. Ai fini di una programmazione di maggior dettaglio si delinea la necessità di definire strumenti pianificatori ad un livello sub-regionale coerenti con la programmazione forestale a livello regionale. Scopo del presente lavoro è definire una metodologia per individuare nelle aree di ricongiunzione dei nuclei forestali esistenti, definite nell’ambito del PFR, diversi livelli di priorità d’intervento forestale per la mitigazione di fenomeni di dissesto idrogeologico. A tal fine è stato integrato il Sistema Informativo Geografico messo a punto per la definizione delle aree a priorità a scala regionale con ulteriori strati informativi. Ai fini dello studio, e in via sperimentale, è stata individuata un’area della Sicilia rappresentativa di sufficiente eterogeneità ambientale e di copertura forestale che coincide con la parte settentrionale e nord-occidentale rispettivamente dei bacini dell’Imera meridionale e del Simeto, nelle province di Enna, Messina e Caltanissetta. Nell’ambito dell’area di studio, all’interno delle aree di ricongiunzione delle superfici forestali esistenti sono state individuate diverse unità geomorfologiche omogenee sulla base della suscettività del territorio ai dissesti idrogeologici determinata in funzione della carta delle pendenze e dalla carta litologica in scala 1:100.000. Attraverso le operazioni di sovrapposizione (overlay) tra le precedenti carte sono state individuate le aree a priorità di intervento forestale (aree a differente suscettività potenziale al dissesto idrogeologico) ad una scala di maggiore dettaglio (1:100.000) rispetto a quella definita a livello di programmazione regionale (1:250.000). Queste aree sono state ulteriormente caratterizzate per tipologie di dissesto idrogeologico, distinte in profonde e superficiali, tra cui quest’ultime assumono particolare interesse sperimentale in quanto potenzialmente mitigabili con la realizzazione di interventi forestali. La densità dei dissesti per unità geomorfologica omogenea ha permesso di definire i livelli di priorità d’intervento e conseguentemente di redigere gli indirizzi di programmazione forestale per le aree interessate da fenomeni di dissesto superficiale
Precision Measurement of KS Meson Lifetime with the KLOE detector
Using a large sample of pure, slow, short lived K0 mesons collected with KLOE
detector at DaFne, we have measured the KS lifetime. From a fit to the proper
time distribution we find tau = (89.562 +- 0.029_stat +- 0.043_syst) ps. This
is the most precise measurement today in good agreement with the world average
derived from previous measurements. We observe no dependence of the lifetime on

An update of the evolving epidemic of blaKPC carrying Klebsiella pneumoniae in Sicily, Italy, 2014: Emergence of multiple Non-ST258 Clones
Background: In Italy, Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase producing K. pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) strains are highly endemic and KPC producing CC258 is reported as the widely predominating clone. In Palermo, Italy, previous reports have confirmed this pattern. However, recent preliminary findings suggest that an epidemiological change is likely ongoing towards a polyclonal KPC-Kp spread. Here we present the results of molecular typing of 94 carbapenem non susceptible K. pneumoniae isolates detected during 2014 in the three different hospitals in Palermo, Italy. Methods and Results: Ninety-four consecutive, non replicate carbapenem non susceptible isolates were identified in the three largest acute general hospitals in Palermo, Italy, in the six-month period March-August 2014. They were characterized by PCR for β-lactam, aminoglycoside and plasmid mediated fluoroquinolone resistance genetic determinants. The mgrB gene of the colistin resistant isolates was amplified and sequenced. Clonality was assessed by pulsed field gel electrophoresis and multilocus sequence typing. Eight non-CC258 sequence types (STs) were identified accounting for 60% of isolates. In particular, ST307 and ST273 accounted for 29% and 18% of isolates. CC258 isolates were more frequently susceptible to gentamicin and non-CC258 isolates to amikacin. Colistin non susceptibility was found in 42% of isolates. Modifications of mgrB were found in 32 isolates. Conclusions: Concurrent clonal expansion of some STs and lateral transmission of genetic resistance determinants are likely producing a thorough change of the KPC-Kp epidemiology in Palermo, Italy. In our setting mgrB inactivation proved to substantially contribute to colistin resistance. Our findings suggest the need to continuously monitor the KPC-Kp epidemiology and to assess by a nationwide survey the possible shifting towards a polyclonal epidemic
Large-scale proteomic identification of S100 proteins in breast cancer tissues
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Attempts to reduce morbidity and mortality in breast cancer is based on efforts to identify novel biomarkers to support prognosis and therapeutic choices. The present study has focussed on S100 proteins as a potentially promising group of markers in cancer development and progression. One reason of interest in this family of proteins is because the majority of the S100 genes are clustered on a region of human chromosome 1q21 that is prone to genomic rearrangements. Moreover, there is increasing evidence that S100 proteins are often up-regulated in many cancers, including breast, and this is frequently associated with tumour progression.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Samples of breast cancer tissues were obtained during surgical intervention, according to the bioethical recommendations, and cryo-preserved until used. Tissue extracts were submitted to proteomic preparations for 2D-IPG. Protein identification was performed by N-terminal sequencing and/or peptide mass finger printing.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The majority of the detected S100 proteins were absent, or present at very low levels, in the non-tumoral tissues adjacent to the primary tumor. This finding strengthens the role of S100 proteins as putative biomarkers. The proteomic screening of 100 cryo-preserved breast cancer tissues showed that some proteins were ubiquitously expressed in almost all patients while others appeared more sporadic. Most, if not all, of the detected S100 members appeared reciprocally correlated. Finally, from the perspective of biomarkers establishment, a promising finding was the observation that patients which developed distant metastases after a three year follow-up showed a general tendency of higher S100 protein expression, compared to the disease-free group.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This article reports for the first time the comparative proteomic screening of several S100 protein members among a large group of breast cancer patients. The results obtained strongly support the hypothesis that a significant deregulation of multiple S100 protein members is associated with breast cancer progression, and suggest that these proteins might act as potential prognostic factors for patient stratification. We propose that this may offer a significant contribution to the knowledge and clinical applications of the S100 protein family to breast cancer.</p
Circulating Cell-Free DNA in Dogs with Mammary Tumors: Short and Long Fragments and Integrity Index
Circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has been considered an interesting diagnostic/prognostic plasma biomarker in tumor-bearing subjects. In cancer patients, cfDNA can hypothetically derive from tumor necrosis/apoptosis, lysed circulating cells, and some yet unrevealed mechanisms of active release. This study aimed to preliminarily analyze cfDNA in dogs with canine mammary tumors (CMTs). Forty-four neoplastic, 17 non-neoplastic disease-bearing, and 15 healthy dogs were recruited. Necrosis and apoptosis were also assessed as potential source of cfDNA on 78 CMTs diagnosed from the 44 dogs. The cfDNA fragments and integrity index significantly differentiated neoplastic versus non-neoplastic dogs (P<0.05), and allowed the distinction between benign and malignant lesions (P<0.05). Even if without statistical significance, the amount of cfDNA was also affected by tumor necrosis and correlated with tumor size and apoptotic markers expression. A significant (P<0.01) increase of Bcl-2 in malignant tumors was observed, and in metastatic CMTs the evasion of apoptosis was also suggested. This study, therefore, provides evidence that cfDNA could be a diagnostic marker in dogs carrying mammary nodules suggesting that its potential application in early diagnostic procedures should be further investigated
Quality of life in liver transplant recipients during the Corona virus disease 19 pandemic: A multicentre study
Background: Liver transplant recipients require specific clinical and psychosocial attention given their frailty. Main aim of the study was to assess the quality of life after liver transplant during the current pandemic. Methods: This multicentre study was conducted in clinically stable, liver transplanted patients. Enrollment opened in June and finished in September 2021. Patients completed a survey including lifestyle data, quality of life (Short Form health survey), sport, employment, diet. To examine the correlations, we calculated Pearson coefficients while to compare subgroups, independent samples t-tests and ANOVAs. To detect the predictors of impaired quality of life, we used multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: We analysed data from 511 patients observing significant associations between quality of life’s physical score and both age and adherence to Mediterranean diet (p <.01). A significant negative correlation was observed between mental score and the sedentary activity (p <.05). Female patients scored significantly lower than males in physical and mental score. At multivariate analysis, females were 1.65 times more likely to report impaired physical score than males. Occupation and physical activity presented significant positive relation with quality of life. Adherence to Mediterranean diet was another relevant predictor. Regarding mental score, female patients were 1.78 times more likely to show impaired mental score in comparison with males. Sedentary activity and adherence to Mediterranean diet were further noteworthy predictors. Conclusions: Females and subjects with sedentary lifestyle or work inactive seem to show the worst quality of life and both physical activity and Mediterranean diet might be helpful to improve it
Micronuclei formation in liver fibrosis samples from patients infected by hepatitis C virus
Genetic research on fibrosis outset and its progression in chronic hepatitis (CH) by hepatitis C virus (HCV) are limited. The lack of cytogenetic data led us to investigate the presence of micronuclei (MNi), as a sign of genomic damage. Hepatocytes of hepatic parenchyma from 62 cases diagnosed with CH associated with HCV and displaying different degrees of fibrosis (F1-F4) were analyzed. These data were compared to 15 cases without fibrosis (F0). Twelve healthy liver parenchyma samples were included as control. All samples were obtained from paraffin-embedded archival material. Micronucleated hepatocytes (MN-Heps) were analyzed through Feulgen/Fast-green staining. Results showed that the rates of MN-Heps in the F4 group were statistically significant (p < 0.05) and higher than those in the control group. Like results were also obtained on comparing F4 with F0, F1, F2 and F3 cases. Conversely, differences were not significant (p > 0.05) on comparing F0, F1, F2, F3, one against the other, as well as individual versus control. Although chromosomal losses in CH were detected, it was shown that liver parenchyma with fibrosis in the initial stages (F1-F3) cannot be considered cytogenetically abnormal
