    Assessing the role of dispersed floralresources for managed bees in providingsupporting ecosystem services for croppollination

    Most pollination ecosystem services studies have focussed on wild pollinators and their dependence on natural floral resources adjacent to crop fields. However, managed pollinators depend on a mixture of floral resources that are spatially separated from the crop field. Here, we consider the supporting role these resources play as an ecosystem services provider to quantify the use and availability of floral resources, and to estimate their relative contribution to support pollination services of managed honeybees. Beekeepers supplying pollination services to the Western Cape deciduous fruit industry were interviewed to obtain information on their use of floral resources. For 120 apiary sites, we also analysed floral resources within a two km radius of each site based on geographic data. The relative availability of floral resources at sites was compared to regional availability. The relative contribution of floral resources-types to sustain managed honeybees was estimated. Beekeepers showed a strong preference for eucalypts and canola. Beekeepers selectively placed more hives at sites with eucalypt and canola and less with natural vegetation. However, at the landscape-scale, eucalypt was the least available resource, whereas natural vegetation was most common. Based on analysis of apiary sites, we estimated that 700,818 ha of natural vegetation, 73,910 ha of canola fields, and 10,485 ha of eucalypt are used to support the managed honeybee industry in the Western Cape. Whereas the Cape managed honeybee system uses a bee native to the region, alien plant species appear disproportionately important among the floral resources being exploited. We suggest that an integrated approach, including evidence from interview and landscape data, and fine-scale biological data is needed to study floral resources supporting managed honeybees

    Scent chemistry and patterns of thermogenesis in male and female cones of the African cycad Encephalartos natalensis (Zamiaceae)

    Most, if not all, extant cycads are pollinated by insects which use the cones as larval brood sites. These interactions appear to be mediated by cone volatiles, and, in some species, by patterns of thermogenesis. We investigated the chemical composition of volatile emissions and patterns of thermogenesis in cones of the South African cycad Encephalartos natalensis, using a gas chromatograph–mass spectrometer (GC–MS) and miniature temperature data loggers (ibuttons), respectively. This was done during various developmental stages (before and during receptivity and pollen release) for both female and male cones. A total of 31 compounds were identified in headspace samples; 17 of which were common to both sexes, 12 found only in male cones, and two found only in female cones. The major volatiles in pollen and female cones are (3E)-1,3-octadiene (averaging 54.25% and 15.82% of total emissions), (3E,5Z)-1,3,5-octatriene (averaging 13.37% and 47.66%), and α-pinene (averaging 16.29% and 12.24%). Female cones were not thermogenic before and during receptivity whereas pollen cones were thermogenic during pollen shedding. Thermogenesis of male cones occurred between 1400 h and 1530 h on successive afternoons, reaching an average of c. 10.5 °C above ambient temperature. Volatile emissions and thermogenesis occurred in association with insect activity on the cones suggesting that they both play a role in regulating insect behaviour

    Einstein Manifolds As Yang-Mills Instantons

    It is well-known that Einstein gravity can be formulated as a gauge theory of Lorentz group where spin connections play a role of gauge fields and Riemann curvature tensors correspond to their field strengths. One can then pose an interesting question: What is the Einstein equations from the gauge theory point of view? Or equivalently, what is the gauge theory object corresponding to Einstein manifolds? We show that the Einstein equations in four dimensions are precisely self-duality equations in Yang-Mills gauge theory and so Einstein manifolds correspond to Yang-Mills instantons in SO(4) = SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R gauge theory. Specifically, we prove that any Einstein manifold with or without a cosmological constant always arises as the sum of SU(2)_L instantons and SU(2)_R anti-instantons. This result explains why an Einstein manifold must be stable because two kinds of instantons belong to different gauge groups, instantons in SU(2)_L and anti-instantons in SU(2)_R, and so they cannot decay into a vacuum. We further illuminate the stability of Einstein manifolds by showing that they carry nontrivial topological invariants.Comment: v4; 17 pages, published version in Mod. Phys. Lett.

    Pollination ecosystem services in South African agricultural systems

    Insect pollinators, both managed and wild, have become a focus of global scientific, political and media attention because of their apparent decline and the perceived impact of this decline on crop production. Crop pollination by insects is an essential ecosystem service that increases the yield and quality of approximately 35% of crops worldwide. Pollinator declines are a consequence of multiple environmental pressures, e.g. habitat transformation and fragmentation, loss of floral resources, pesticides, pests and diseases, and climate change. Similar environmental pressures are faced in South Africa where there is a high demand for pollination services. In this paper, we synthesise data on the importance of different pollinators as a basis for services to South African crops and on the status of managed honeybees. We also focus on insect pollination services for the Western Cape deciduous fruit industry, which is worth ZAR9800 million per year and is heavily reliant on pollination services from managed honeybees. We discuss landscape and regional level floral resources needed to maintain sufficient numbers of managed honeybee colonies. In summary, the available literature shows a lack of data on diversity and abundance of crop pollinators, and a lack of long-term data to assess declines. We highlight key areas that require research in South Africa and emphasise the critical role of floral resource availability at the landscape and regional scale to sustain pollinators. We conclude that understanding the dynamics of how floral resources are used will help inform how landscapes could be better managed in order to provide long-term sustainable pollination services

    Donaldson has shown that the moduli space of monopoles MkM_k is diffeomorphic to the space \Rat_k of based rational maps from the two-sphere to itself. We use this diffeomorphism to give an explicit description of the bundle on \Rat_k obtained by pushing out the index bundle from MkM_k. This gives an alternative and more explicit proof of some earlier results of Cohen and Jones.Comment: 9 page

    Preferred strategies for secondary infrainguinal bypass: Lessons learned from 300 consecutive reoperations

    AbstractPurpose: To determine the optimal surgical strategies in reoperative infrainguinal bypass, we reviewed our results in 300 consecutive secondary bypasses in 251 patients operated on between Jan. 1, 1975, and Nov. 1, 1993.Methods: There were 168 men (67%) and 83 women (33%), with a mean age of 64.8 years and a typical distribution of risk factors including smoking (76.4%), diabetes (33.7%), and coronary artery disease (47.1%). The indications for surgery were limb-threatening ischemia in 83.5% and severe claudication in 16.5% of patients. The majority of conduits (n = 213) were autogenous vein and were composed of a single segment of greater saphenous vein in 121 bypasses (57%) and various alternative veins including composite, arm, and lesser saphenous vein in 92 bypasses (43%). Prosthetic conduits included 69 polytetrafluoroethylene, 16 umbilical vein, and two Dacron grafts.Results: There was one perioperative death (0.3%) and a 25% total morbidity rate including a 1.7% myocardial infarction rate. There was a 28.6% early (<30 days) graft failure and 10.7% early amputation rate for prosthetic bypass grafts compared with 13.6% early graft failure and 5.6% early amputation rates for vein grafts. Autogenous vein bypasses had higher 5-year secondary patency rates than had prosthetic grafts (51.5% ± 4.6% vs 27.4% ± 6.1%, p < 0.001). Results with autogenous vein bypass improved significantly from the 1975 to 1984 to the 1985 to 1993 interval with 5-year secondary patency rates increasing from 38.3% ± 6.9% to 59.1% ± 5.8% (p = 0.017) and 5-year limb-salvage rates increasing from 40.4% ± 7.6% to 72.4% ± 6.6% (p < 0.001). Vein grafts to the popliteal and tibial outflow levels had equivalent long-term results. Vein grafts completed for claudication demonstrated results superior to those for limb salvage, with a 5-year secondary patency rate of 75.8% ± 8.1% versus 52.3% ± 7.9% (p = 0.048). Secondary autogenous vein bypass grafting performed after early primary graft failure (< 3 months) did particularly poorly, with only a 27.2% ± 7.7% 4-year secondary patency rate. Greater saphenous veins tended to perform better than alternative vein bypasses, with a 5-year secondary patency rate of 68.5% ± 6.0% compared with 48.3% ± 10.5% (p = 0.09) and a 5-year limb-salvage rate of 77.8% ± 7.4% versus 54.2% ± 11.8% (p = 0.046).Conclusions: When patients suffer a recurrence of limb-threatening ischemia at the time of infrainguinal graft failure, aggressive attempts at secondary revascularization with autogenous vein are warranted based on the low surgical morbidity and mortality rates and the improved patency and limb salvage rates that are currently attainable.     Experimental implementation of a quantum optical state comparison amplifier

    We present an experimental demonstration of a practical nondeterministic quantum optical amplification scheme that employs two mature technologies, state comparison and photon subtraction, to achieve amplification of known sets of coherent states with high fidelity. The amplifier uses coherent states as a resource rather than single photons, which allows for a relatively simple light source, such as a diode laser, providing an increased rate of amplification. The amplifier is not restricted to low amplitude states. With respect to the two key parameters, fidelity and the amplified state production rate, we demonstrate significant improvements over previous experimental implementations, without the requirement of complex photonic components. Such a system may form the basis of trusted quantum repeaters in nonentanglement-based quantum communications systems with known phase alphabets, such as quantum key distribution or quantum digital signatures

    AbstractObjectives: On the basis of the widespread belief that aortobifemoral bypass (ABF) represents the optimal mode of revascularization for patients with diffuse aortoiliac disease, vascular surgeons are often aggressive about its application in young adults. We undertook this retrospective evaluation of ABFs performed from 1980 to 1999 to determine whether the results justify this approach. Patients of less than 50 years of age (n = 45) were compared with those aged 50 to 59 years (n = 93) and those aged more than 60 years (n = 146).Results: Younger patients were more likely to undergo operation for claudication than were older patients (72% versus 59% and 55%; P < .04). Younger patients were significantly more likely to be smokers (87%) but less likely to have diabetes, hypertension, or cerebrovascular disease. Bypasses were constructed in an end-to-end fashion in 71.1% of patients of less than 50 years versus 68.8% and 71.2% of older patients (P = not significant). The mean diameter of aortic grafts was significantly smaller in younger patients (14.6 mm) than in older patients (15.6 mm and 15.5 mm; P < .01). The need for a subsequent infrainguinal reconstruction was highest in the youngest patients (24% versus 17% and 7%; P < .01). Surgical mortality rates were low in all groups (0%, 1%, and 2.0% for increasing age groups; P = not significant). Five-year primary and secondary patency rates increased significantly with each increase in age interval: 5-year primary patency rate: less than 50 years, 66% ± 8%; 50 to 59 years, 87% ± 5%; more than 60 years, 96% ±2% (P < .05 for all comparisons). Five-year secondary patency rates were: less than 50 years, 79% ± 7%; 50 to 59 years, 91% ± 4%; more than 60 years, 98% ± 2% (P < .05 for all comparisons). Five-year survival rate was comparable in all three groups: less than 50 years, 93% ± 5%; 50 to 59 years, 92% ± 4%; more than 60 years, 87% ± 4% (P = not significant).Conclusion: Increased virulence of aortic disease, smaller aortic size, and more progressive infrainguinal disease may all negatively impact the results of ABF in younger patients. Although 5-year results are acceptable, increased caution is warranted in the routine application of ABF in young patients without limb-threatening ischemia

    Australian Football League concussion guidelines: what do community players think?

    BACKGROUND: Preventing concussion in sport is a global challenge. To assess community-level adult male Australian Football players\u27 views on following the Australian Football League\u27s (AFL) concussion guidelines. METHODS: 3 focus groups, each comprising 6 players from 1 regional league, were conducted until saturation of issues raised. Discussions followed a semistructured script and were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was conducted by 2 coders independently. RESULTS: Identified advantages of the guidelines included highlighting the seriousness of concussion; changing the culture around playing with concussion and shifting return-to-play decision responsibility from players to others. Disadvantages included players being removed from play unnecessarily; removal of players\u27 rights to decide if they are fit to play and players changing their behaviours to avoid being removed from play. Identified facilitators to guideline use included local league enforcement; broad information dissemination and impartial medically trained staff to assess concussion. Identified barriers to guideline use included players\u27 desire to play at all costs; external pressure that encouraged players to return to play prematurely; and inconvenience and cost. CONCLUSIONS: Players generally understand that the AFL concussion guidelines protect their long-term welfare. However, their desire to play at all costs and help their team win is a common barrier to reporting concussion and adhering to guidelines. Leagues should take a lead role by mandating and enforcing the use of the guidelines and educating coaches, game day medical providers and players. The return-to-play component of the guidelines is complex and needs further consideration in the context of community sport
