Finite strain analysis in elastic theory

    Get PDF
The stability of the clamped circular thin plate is investigated beginning with v. Karman\u27s non linear differential equations for large strains. This non-linear system is developed into two linear sequences of equations ordered in powers of a parameter. The first approximation is found to yield the elementary solution of the problem. The second approximation of the radial membrane stress is shown to decrease the compressive stress in the center of the plate and increase it at the edge. The method of removing the indeterminacy of the second approximation to the slope function is outlined but not carried out because the explicit form of the particular integral free of integrals was not obtained;A parameter expansion, due to Garabedian, is employed to order the three-dimensional equilibrium equations and surface traction conditions for the moderately thick circular plate. From these equations the differential equations for the deflection and the stretching of the middle plane of the plate are derived for large strains. A method of successive approximations is then used to solve the non-linear differential equation for the case of the clamped plate with uniform loading. The correction to the elementary solution for the deflection is found to be significant only for extremely large values of the loading. The solution for the stretching of the middle plane of the plate, using the elementary value of the deflection, is found to be possible only under the assumption that rigid clamping of the edge of the plate against lateral displacements is impossible

Effect of autofrettage in the thick-walled cylinder with a radial cross-bore

    Get PDF
The effect of autofrettage on the stress level in thick-walled cylinders with a radial cross-bore is investigated by applying inelastic finite element analysis with cyclic pressure loading. A macro is created in ANSYS to calculate the equivalent alternating stress intensity, S-eq, based on the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. The value of S-eq is used to evaluate the fatigue life of the vessel. For a specific cyclic load level, a distinct optimum autofrettage pressure is identified by plotting autofrettage pressure against the number of cycles from design fatigue data. The fatigue life of the autofrettaged vessel with such an optimum pressure is increased compared with the case where no autofrettage is used

User's guide to image processing applications of the NOAA satellite HRPT/AVHRR data. Part 1: Introduction to the satellite system and its applications. Part 2: Processing and analysis of AVHRR imagery

    Get PDF
The use of NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radar/High Resolution Picture Transmission (AVHRR/HRPT) imagery for earth resource applications is provided for the applications scientist for use within the various Earth science, resource, and agricultural disciplines. A guide to processing NOAA AVHRR data using the hardware and software systems integrated for this NASA project is provided. The processing steps from raw data on computer compatible tapes (1B data format) through usable qualitative and quantitative products for applications are given. The manual is divided into two parts. The first section describes the NOAA satellite system, its sensors, and the theoretical basis for using these data for environmental applications. Part 2 is a hands-on description of how to use a specific image processing system, the International Imaging Systems, Inc. (I2S) Model 75 Array Processor and S575 software, to process these data

Social TV: Linking TV Content to Buzz and Sales

    Get PDF
“Social TV” is a term that broadly describes the online social interactions occurring between viewers while watching television. In this paper, we show that TV networks can derive value from social media content placed in shows because it leads to increased word of mouth via online posts, and it highly correlates with TV show related sales. In short, we show that TV event triggers change the online behavior of viewers. In this paper, we first show that using social media content on the televised American reality singing competition, The Voice, led to increased social media engagement during the TV broadcast. We then illustrate that social media buzz about a contestant after a performance is highly correlated with song sales from that contestant’s performance. We believe this to be the first study linking TV content to buzz and sales in real time
