El camino de la reescritura: la metamorfosis en "El divino Narciso" de Sor Juana

El divino Narciso, like each auto sacramental, has the Eucharist as its principal theme, namely the transformation of the Christ into the sacred host. To symbolize this transformation in the theatre play, Sor Juana uses another metamorphosis: the history of Narcissus, who falls in love with himself and transforms into a white narcissus. As a consequence, there is a double metamorphosis in the play: both in the subject matter and in the process of transposing. We will analyze this process, in which Sor Juana successfully combines elements from the pagan history of Narcissus with Christian elements related to the transformation of Christ in the holy Eucharist. We propose the hypothesis that the creative process is also a metaphor of the metamorphosis which stands thematically in the centre of the play El divino Narciso.

A synthetic peptide that prevents cAMP regulation in mammalian hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels

Binding of TRIP8b to the cyclic nucleotide binding domain (CNBD) of mammalian hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels prevents their regulation by cAMP. Since TRIP8b is expressed exclusively in the brain, we envisage that it can be used for orthogonal control of HCN channels beyond the central nervous system. To this end, we have identified by rational design a 40-aa long peptide (TRIP8bnano) that recapitulates affinity and gating effects of TRIP8b in HCN isoforms (hHCN1, mHCN2, rbHCN4) and in the cardiac current If in rabbit and mouse sinoatrial node cardiomyocytes. Guided by an NMR-derived structural model that identifies the key molecular interactions between TRIP8bnano and the HCN CNBD, we further designed a cell-penetrating peptide (TAT-TRIP8bnano) which successfully prevented β-adrenergic activation of mouse If leaving the stimulation of the L-type calcium current (ICaL) unaffected. TRIP8bnano represents a novel approach to selectively control HCN activation, which yields the promise of a more targeted pharmacology compared to pore blockers

Hybridity of the Judeo-Christian tradition as revindication of religious syncretism in the New Spain: El divino Narciso by Sor Juana

Traditionally, critics point out that the hybrid character of the play is the consequence of an ingenious mixture of the classic (Ovid’s Narciso) and the Christian tradition (the figure of Christ and his offer). Nevertheless, we find that the hybrid character of the protagonist and other main characters of the play can be explained as having a multifaceted Judeo-Christian meaning. We highlight these different features, often contradictory but all of them originating from one and the same religious tradition: the Old and New Testament. We suggest that the dramaturge chooses to emphasize precisely the hybrid character of the Christian tradition, which was introduced by the Spanish colonizer as a “pure” and “unmixed” religion, as to valorise the religious syncretism practiced by the mestizo society in seventeenth century New Spain

Evidence of poly (ADP-ribosylation) in the cockroach Periplaneta americana.

Poly(ADP-ribosylation) is a post-translational modification of nuclear proteins typical of most eukaryotic cells. This process participates in DNA replication and repakandisnlainly regulated by two enzymes, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase, which is responsible for the synthesis of polymers of ADP-ribose, and poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase, which perfonns polymer degradation. The aim 'of this work was to investigate in the cockroach Periplaneta americana L. (Blattaria: Blattidae) the behaviour of poly(ADPribosylation). In particular, we addressed: (i) the possible modulation of poly(ADP-ribosylation) during the embryonic development; (ii) the expression of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase and glycobydrolase in dilierent tissues; and (iii) the role of poly(ADPribosylation) during spennatogenesis. In this work we demonstrated that: (i) as revealed, by specific biochemical assays, active poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase and glycohydrolase are present exclusively in P. americana embryos at early stages of development; (ii) an activity carrying out poly(ADP-ribose) synthesis was fouod in extracts from testes; and (iii) the synthesis of poly(ADPribose) occurs preferentia1ly in differentiating spermatids/spennatozoa. CoHectively, oUI results indicate that the poly(ADP-ribosylation) process in P. americana, which is a hemimetabolous insect, displays catalytical and structural features similar to those described in the holometabolous insects and in 'mammalian cells. Furthermore, this process appears to be modulatedduring embryonic development and spermatogenesis
