Static impurities in the kagome lattice: dimer freezing and mutual repulsion

We consider the effects of doping the S = 1/2 kagome lattice with static impurities. We demonstrate that impurities lower the number of low-lying singlet states, induce dimer-dimer correlations of considerable spatial extent, and do not generate free spin degrees of freedom. Most importantly, they experience a highly unconventional mutual repulsion as a direct consequence of the strong spin frustration. These properties are illustrated by exact diagonalization, and reproduced to semi-quantitative accuracy within a dimer resonating-valence-bond description which affords access to longer length scales. We calculate the local magnetization induced by doped impurities, and consider its implications for nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on known kagome systems.Comment: 9 pages, 12 figure

Présence et représentation dans la philosophie du théâtre d’Henri Gouhier

Cet article propose une réflexion sur la conception du théâtre élaborée par le philosophe Henri Gouhier. L’intérêt de son approche consiste, selon l’auteur, à montrer que l’essence du théâtre est liturgie; quand bien même un tel théâtre se voudrait athée, ou militant. Cette hypothèse, implicite chez Gouhier, repose sur deux arguments qu’on peut voir affleurer dans ses textes. D’une part, sur l’idée que la vocation du théâtre, comme de la liturgie, réside dans l’exhibition de la « présence réelle ». Dans cette perspective, rendre réellement présent le corps absent, s’affronter au mystère de cette incarnation constituerait le premier point de jonction entre théâtre et liturgie. D’autre part, cette hypothèse repose également sur le fait que le théâtre, sur le modèle de la liturgie, tenterait de réaliser cette présence au moyen de l’articulation nécessaire du geste et de la parole. Mais, si on peut déduire de la lecture de Gouhier une telle promiscuité, on doit affirmer en même temps la volonté du philosophe de maintenir une séparation nette entre ces deux pratiques. Ce double mouvement de coïncidence et de séparation peut alors être lu, selon l’auteur, comme la marque d’un déplacement de l’expérience religieuse. Il s’agirait de dire que, paradoxalement, toute expérience religieuse ne peut désormais être vécue et pensée que hors du champ religieux, dans un théâtre et une philosophie résolument athées.This article sheds light on the philosopher Henri Gouhier's conception of drama. His work merits such attention because his writings remind the reader that drama is liturgical by its very nature, even when texts are considered atheistic or militant. This reading of Gouhier's work is based on two arguments that implicitly define his writings. The first is based on the principle that drama, like liturgy, is demonstrative of "real presence": in other words, a link between drama and liturgy can thus be made through the idea that both forms seek to make the absent body present and the mystery of that incarnation manifest. The second argument is based on the fact that drama like liturgy attempts to embody that presence through "speech-acts". But if one can infer proximity between the two notions, Gouhier never denies their autonomy. Coincidence and separation can here be interpreted as the result of the displacement of the religious experience in contemporary society. Paradoxically perhaps, in the case of atheistic theatrical forms and philosophical writings, this article affirms that religious experience, in theatre or elsewhere, cannot be experienced or analysed outside the religious frame

Interaction between static holes in a quantum dimer model on the kagome lattice

A quantum dimer model (QDM) on the kagome lattice with an extensive ground-state entropy was recently introduced [Phys. Rev. B 67, 214413 (2003)]. The ground-state energy of this QDM in presence of one and two static holes is investigated by means of exact diagonalizations on lattices containing up to 144 kagome sites. The interaction energy between the holes (at distances up to 7 lattice spacings) is evaluated and the results show no indication of confinement at large hole separations.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Static impurities in the S=(3/2) kagome lattice: Exact diagonalization calculations on small clusters

We consider the effects of doping the S=(3/2) kagome lattice with static, nonmagnetic impurities. By exact-diagonalization calculations on small clusters, we deduce the local spin correlations and magnetization distribution around a vacancy. As in the S=(1/2) kagome lattice, in the vicinity of the impurity, we find an extended region where the spin correlations are altered as a consequence of frustration relief and no indications for the formation of local moments. We discuss the implications of our results for local-probe measurements on S=(3/2) kagome materials
