Consumer Class Actions Under the Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act
The Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act, presently in force in eight states, makes a private injunctive remedy available to persons likely to be damaged by misleading advertising, false disparagement, trade symbol infringement and other deceptive trade practices. This article explores the utility of the Uniform Act to individual consumers, and to groups of consumers. The procedural prerequisites of class actions under both the new and old versions of Rule 23 are considered in detail, and it is concluded that consumer class actions under the Uniform Act can provide an effective remedy for widespread and systematic consumer protection
FIRBACK: II. Data Reduction and Calibration of the 170 micron ISO Deep Cosmological Survey
We present the final reduction and calibration of the FIRBACK ISOPHOT data.
FIRBACK is a deep cosmological survey performed at 170 microns. This paper
deals with the ISOPHOT C200 camera with the C160 filter. We review the whole
data reduction process and compare our final calibration with DIRBE (for the
extended emission) and IRAS (for point sources). The FIRBACK source extraction
and galaxy counts is discussed in a companion paper (Dole et al., 2001).Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 9 pages, includes new aa.cls. Also
available (with better quality figures) at http://wwwfirback.ias.u-psud.fr

A Lower-Limit Flux for the Extragalactic Background Light
... A strict lower-limit flux for the evolving extragalactic background light
(and in particular the cosmic infrared background) has been calculated up to
redshift of 5. The computed flux is below the existing upper limits from direct
observations, and in agreement with all existing limits derived from very-high
energy gamma-ray observations. The corrected spectra are still in agreement
with simple theoretical predictions. The derived strict lower-limit EBL flux is
very close to the upper limits from gamma-ray observations. This is true for
the present day EBL but also for the diffuse flux at higher redshift. If future
detections of high redshift gamma-ray sources require a lower EBL flux than
derived here, the physics assumptions used to derive the upper limits have to
be revised. The lower-limit EBL model is not only needed for absorption
features in AGN and other gamma-ray sources but is also essential when
alternative particle processes are tested, which could prevent the high energy
gamma-rays from being absorbed. It can also be used for a quaranteed
interaction of cosmic-ray particles. The model is available online.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted by A&

Auditing the Numeracy Demands of the Middle Years Curriculum
The National Numeracy Review Report recognized that numeracy development requires an across the curriculum commitment. To explore the nature of this commitment we conducted a numeracy audit of the South Australian Middle Years curriculum, using a numeracy model that incorporates mathematical knowledge, dispositions, tools, contexts, and a critical orientation. All learning areas in the published curriculum were found to have distinctive numeracy demands. The audit should encourage teachers to promote numeracy in even richer ways in the curriculum they enact with students
