The purpose of the research was to ascertain if parents of students who attend school in an urban setting could identify ways to be involved in a child\u27s education at home and at school. The research was conducted over an eight week period. The subjects of the research were adults from various parts of the country. However, it should be noted that out of the twenty urban parents that took part in the research, the vast majority of them resided in the Rochester, New York area. The research was collected through interviewing the participants. The interviews were conducted over the phone or in person, depending upon the wishes of the participant. The results of the research collected show that most urban parents know how to be involved in a child\u27s education at home and at school. However, it is important to point out that although most parents were only able to identify one to three ways to be involved in a child\u27s education at home or at school. One of the suggestions for implications for future research include establishing a sound criterion that would gauge not only the quantity of answers given by parents, but also the quality of answers. Another suggestion would be to obtain a more random sample of urban parents, perhaps one that doesn\u27t have a large percentage of its parents in a centralized location in and around the city of Rochester

The treatment of organized labor in fifteen high school social studies textbooks.

Thesis (M.A.)--Boston UniversityThe study was undertaken in the belief that the high school pupil of today should have a sound knowledge of the backgrounds and policies of the American trade union movement, and the problems arising from its existence. Regardless of whether the graduate becomes a union member or not, trade unionism, with its increasing strength, is going to have an important affect on his life. With this in mind, the knowledge of trade unionism was thought to be vital to the high school graduate. The charge had been made that organized labor was both misrepresented and ignored by the high schools. No attempt was made to answer or verify the charge, but it was hoped that the data obtained would aid the critic or educator in reaching an objective conclusion as regards the charge. [TRUNCATED] The most important conclusion derived from the study was that there existed a complete lack of harmony between both all fifteen of the books studied and within the books of each of the three subject areas considered as to what was said about labor. Unanimity was seldom achieved in the consideration of any one particular point, whether it were an event, person, act, agency, organization, or term. When a unanimous choice was discovered the degree of emphasis given the point by the various authors was found to be great. No definite tendency toward bias was noticed, but rather there was a tendency to avoid the issue in many respects. The history books stressed the earlier, more violent aspects in the history of labor; the problems books failed to present the labor question in a challenging, thought-provoking manner; and the government books contented themselves with describing the functions of various administrative bodies. Little, if any, attempt was made to present the labor problem as one aspect of a changing social scene, both affecting, and being affected by, other factors in our society. In brief, labor was handled as though it existed in a vacuum

Many researchers emphasize the need to look at teacher self-efficacy in preservice teacher preparation and training for the teaching profession. The purpose of this study was to explore science teachers’ efficacy beliefs of preservice teachers who are enrolled in general programme and those enrolled in science programme at a college of education in Ghana. Data for the study were collected from a total number of 227 preservice teachers using Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (STEB-B). Data were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics specifically mean and standard deviation and t-test. The results indicated that preservice teachers had high science teaching efficacy however, those who are enrolled in science programme were efficacious than their counterpart in the general programme. Also there was a statistically significant difference in gender on the preservice teachers' science teaching efficacy beliefs. Background: Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide and a serious health problem that affects the majority of women. Aim: We investigated the association between lipid profile and maternal obesity among preeclamptic women in the Cape Coast Metropolis. Subject and Methods: This case.control study involved 60 preeclamptics and 50 healthy pregnant controls matched for age and gestational weeks consecutively recruited from two major hospitals in the Cape Coast Metropolis. Blood samples were collected after overnight fasting and enzymatic spectrophotometric tests used to estimate lipid concentrations. The independent samples t.test, Chi.square, and Pearsonfs correlation were used in the analysis of data gathered. Results: Serum triglyceride (TG) (P = 0.04), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) (P = 0.02), TC (P = 0.01) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) (P = 0.03) levels were higher in preeclamptic participants than in the controls. High density lipoprotein concentration showed no significant variation between the two groups (P = 0.83). Preeclamptic women were more obese (P = 0.07). High body mass index (OR = 1.501; CI = 0.926.2.106, P = 0.01), high TG level (OR = 5.026; CI = 0.794-31.818, P = 0.01), were associated with preeclampsia. Conclusion: Lipid abnormalities, mostly elevated levels of TG, TC, LDL, andVLDL are present in preeclamptics. High TG levels and maternal obesity are associated with preeclampsia among pregnant women in the Cape Coast Metropolis. Keywords: Body mass index, Dyslipidemia, High blood pressure, Pre-eclampsia, Proteinuri
