    A model is presented for an unconfined flow, such as a free jet, impinging on a screen which incorporates the influence of liquid deflection by the screen. The boundary layer blockage coefficient is introduced. This coefficient depends on the screen weave geometry and the jet impingement angle, and essentially accounts for the increase in fluid particle trajectory length through the screen resulting from the flow deflection. Comparisons were made with previous experimental studies to determine empirical values of the blockage coefficient. It is concluded that the new model reliably predicts the bulk flow and penetration characteristics of an impinging liquid jet interacting with a screen

    Study of vapor flow into a capillary acquisition device

    An analytical model was developed that prescribes the conditions for vapor flow through the window screen of a start basket. Several original submodels were developed as part of this model. The submodels interrelate such phenomena as the effect of internal evaporation of the liquid, the bubble point change of a screen in the presence of wicking, the conditions for drying out of a screen through a combination of evaporation and pressure difference, the vapor inflow rate across a wet screen as a function of pressure difference, and the effect on wicking of a difference between the static pressure of the liquid reservoir and the surrounding vapor. Most of these interrelations were verified by a series of separate effects tests, which were also used to determine certain empirical constants in the models. The equations of the model were solved numerically for typical start basket designs, and a simplified start basket was constructed to verify the predictions, using both volatile and nonvolatile test liquids. The test results verified the trends predicted by the model

    Growth Characteristics of Reef-Building Corals Within and External to a Naval Ordinance Range: Vieques, Puerto Rico

    The skeletal growth of reef·building corals is known to be sensitive to the environment. In particular, high levels of sedimentation and turbidity lead to decreased growth rate, suppressed growth variation, and, ultimately, coral death because of reduced illumination necessary to zooxanthellae and/or increased energy expenditure by the coral animal to remove impacted sediments. To assess the effect of Naval Ordnance Range usage at Vieques, Puerto Rico, specimens of Montastrea annulariswere collected from reefs adjacent to and removed from the range area. Growth was measured from annual increments revealed by X-radiography of medial slabs of the coral skeletons. Mean growth rates and growth variances were calculated for each station or station grouping over the common time period 1970-1977. Statistical comparison of the growth data reveals a general similarity between range and control stations. This evidence coupled with quantitative coral abundance and diversity data of others indicate a lack of anomalous and adverse sedimentation/turbidity conditions affecting corals on reefs near the range area. Chronologies of coral band widths compared to historical recorded environmental data indicate that a major natural parameter which controls coral growth in Vieques is annual water temperature variation

    The skeletal extension and corallite shape of individuals of the Caribbean and Atlantic reef-building coral Montastrea annularis (Ellis and Solander) were measured after more than six weeks\u27 continuous flow-through exposure in laboratory aquaria to treatments of 0, 1, 10 and 100-ppm (μl 1-1) drilling mud. Linear increase of the skeleton (extension rate) and fossa length were significantly depressed in the 100-ppm treatment. Chronic exposure to 100-ppm drilling mud impairs coral skeletal growth rate and possibly interferes with sediment rejection capability by lowering calical relief

    2017 Fall.Includes bibliographical references.As the veterinary industry continues to face personal debt and practice management challenges, financial analysis of veterinary practices is becoming increasingly important. Historically, veterinary practices have been managed for profitability, which when measured alone ignores the role investment and borrowing play in earning financial returns. A DuPont Model is employed to measure profitability, asset turnover, and leverage separately and then collectively through the evaluation of return on equity (ROE). Veterinary practices are divided into performance groups based on ROE and the management behavior of each performance group is evaluated and characterized. Returns for higher performing practices flow back into the business to increase productive capacity while returns for lower performing practices flow out of the business through debt repayment and owner compensation. Leverage is important where highest performers used debt to increase productive capacity and thus increase returns and the lowest performers used debt as a tool to keep their poor performing businesses in practice. This work provides a model and reference point for veterinary practice managers to measure their own financial performance
