Analysis and acoustooptical measurements of bulk and surface acoustic wave fields
The development of multielement ultrasonic transducers having full field amplitude and phase control is discussed. In addition, the measurement of the surface particle displacement caused by an idealized impulse load on the surface, the three dimensional mapping of acoustic fields using optical scanning techniques, and the measurement of two dimensional stress distributions using embedded optical fiber sensors are addressed
Epidemiologic studies on short-term effects of low levels of major ambient air pollution components.
Since the development of the World Health Organization (WHO) Air Quality Guidelines for Europe, a large number of epidemiologic studies have been published documenting effects of major air pollutants on health at concentrations below existing guidelines and standards. In this review, recent studies are discussed that permit some evaluation of short-term health effects observed at exposure levels lower than the current WHO Guidelines or U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) standards. Some studies have been conducted at concentration levels that never exceeded existing guidelines or standards. Other studies have been conducted at exposure levels sometimes exceeding current guidelines or standards. The published analyses of several of these studies permit evaluation of low-level health effects either because analyses were restricted to levels not exceeding the guidelines or graphic analyses were reported suggesting effects at these low levels. For ambient ozone, effects on lung function of subjects exercising outdoors have now been documented at 1-hr maximum levels not exceeding 120 micrograms/m3, i.e., half the current U.S. EPA standard. One study even suggests that such effects occur at levels below 100 micrograms/m3. Several studies are now available documenting effects of particulate air pollution on health in the virtual absence of SO2. Effects on mortality and hospital admissions for asthma have been documented at levels not exceeding 100 micrograms/m3, expressed as 24-hr average inhalable particles PM10 concentration. Effects on lung function, acute respiratory symptoms, and medication use have been found at 24-hr average PM10 levels not exceeding 115 micrograms/m3. When the WHO Air Quality Guidelines and the U.S. EPA standard for PM10 were developed, there were no studies available on health effects of PM10. In this review, we include nine studies documenting health effects of measured PM10 at low levels of exposure, indicating that there is now an entirely new epidemiologic database that can be evaluated in the process of revising current guidelines and standards. The low levels of exposure at which effects on health were seen underscore the urgent need for such reevaluations
Measurement of ultrasonic fields in transparent media using a scanning differential interferometer
An experimental system for the detection of three dimensional acoustic fields in optically transparent media using a dual beam differential interferometer is described. In this system, two coherent, parallel, focused laser beams are passed through the specimen and the interference fringe pattern which results when these beams are combined shifts linearly by an amount which is related to the optical pathlength difference between the two beams. It is shown that for small signals, the detector output is directly proportional to the amplitude of the acoustic field integrated along the optical beam path through the specimen. A water tank and motorized optical platform were constructed to allow these dual beams to be scanned through an ultrasonic field generated by a piezoelectric transducer at various distances from the transducer. Scan data for the near, Fresnel, and far zones of a uniform, circular transducer are presented and an algorithm for constructing the radial field profile from this integrated optical data, assuming cylindrical symmetry, is described
The effect of short-term changes in air pollution on respiratory and cardiovascular morbidity in Nicosia, Cyprus.

admissions in Nicosia, Cyprus during 1995-2004. After controlling for long- (year and month) and short-term (day of the
week) patterns as well as the effect of weather in Generalized Additive Poisson models, some positive associations were
observed with all-cause and cause-specific admissions. Risk of hospitalization increased stepwise across quartiles of days with
increasing levels of PM10 by 1.3% (-0.3, 2.8), 4.9% (3.3, 6.6), 5.6% (3.9, 7.3) as compared to days with the lowest
concentrations. For every 10μg/m3 increase in daily average PM10 concentration, there was a 1.2% (-0.1%, 2.4%) increase in
cardiovascular admissions. With respects to respiratory admissions, an effect was observed only in the warm season with a
1.8% (-0.22, 3.85) increase in admissions per 10μg/m3 increase in PM10. The effect on respiratory admissions seemed to be
much stronger in women and, surprisingly, restricted to people of adult age
