LOCV calculations for polarized liquid 3He^3{He} with the spin-dependent correlation

We have used the lowest order constrained variational (LOCV) method to calculate some ground state properties of polarized liquid 3He^{3}He at zero temperature with the spin-dependent correlation function employing the Lennard-Jones and Aziz pair potentials. We have seen that the total energy of polarized liquid 3He^{3}He increases by increasing polarization. For all polarizations, it is shown that the total energy in the spin-dependent case is lower than the spin-independent case. We have seen that the difference between the energies of spin-dependent and spin-independent cases decreases by increasing polarization. We have shown that the main contribution of the potential energy comes from the spin-triplet state.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures. Int. J. Mod. Phys. B (2008) in pres

Evaluations of Neurologists by Their Patients and Residents Are Inversely Correlated

Objective and Background: We hypothesized that evaluation scores for attending neurologists by patients and residents would parallel one another. Additionally, we hypothesized that provider productivity would be also be associated with performance evaluations by patients and residents. Methods: In a university neurology department, we collected individual Clinician and Group Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems patient satisfaction scores and standardized resident evaluation scores (n = 22 faculty members). We performed bivariate analysis of doctor–patient satisfaction versus resident evaluation scores. Results: Attending neurologists with higher patient satisfaction received lower resident evaluation scores (P \u3c .05). There seem to be disproportionate neurologists with low evaluations not meeting clinical productivity targets. Conclusion: Finding a significant inverse correlation was surprising. Perhaps what is valued by patients in their physician is not what residents value in teachers. That deserves further study. Maybe attending physicians who spend their energy on the patient experience do not have sufficient time to devote to teaching and vice versa. That neurologists with low evaluation scores appear more likely to not meet productivity targets supports this idea

    Magneto-Acoustic Spectroscopy in Superfluid 3He-B

We have used the recently discovered acoustic Faraday effect in superfluid 3He to perform high resolution spectroscopy of an excited state of the superfluid condensate. With acoustic cavity interferometry we measure the rotation of the plane of polarization of a transverse sound wave propagating in the direction of magnetic field from which we determine the Zeeman energy of the excited state. We interpret the Lande g-factor, combined with the zero-field energies of the state, using the theory of Sauls and Serene to calculate the strength of f -wave interactions in 3He.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PRL, Aug 30th, 200

South Dakota Farmer-Based Reduced Till Crop Budgets

The use of reduced tillage practices in the U.S. has expanded a great deal over the past 15 years (USDA, 1986) . In 1985, roughly a quarter of South Dakota\u27s corn acreage was reported to be under reduced tillage (S25medra and Delvo, 1986) . A 1985 survey by South Dakota State University (SDSU) showed 69% of the farmer respondents to be using some type of reduced tillage on at least part of their acreage (Allen, 1987). Primary motivations for farmers adopting reduced tillage practices are to reduce machine costs, conserve moisture, and control soil erosion losses. Problems of weed control are usually accentuated under reduced tillage. Greater expenditures for chemical weed control are almost inevitable with reduced tillage. Some studies show interconnections between reduced tillage and fertilizer nutrient requirements

Incentivizing OER Adoption with Course Development Mini-Grants

Open Educational Resources (OER) are one form of digital scholarship used across the country to make education more accessible to students by removing barriers to essential course materials (such as textbooks and supplementary readings). This case shows how one university has taken steps to increase the prominence of OER in classrooms on campus while engaging in a statewide pilot project

Epitaxial Growth Kinetics with Interacting Coherent Islands

The Stranski-Krastanov growth kinetics of undislocated (coherent) 3-dimensional islands is studied with a self-consistent mean field rate theory that takes account of elastic interactions between the islands. The latter are presumed to facilitate the detachment of atoms from the islands with a consequent decrease in their average size. Semi-quantitative agreement with experiment is found for the time evolution of the total island density and the mean island size. When combined with scaling ideas, these results provide a natural way to understand the often-observed initial increase and subsequent decrease in the width of the coherent island size distribution.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Dynamics of Metal Centers Monitored by Nuclear Inelastic Scattering

Nuclear inelastic scattering of synchrotron radiation has been used now since 10 years as a tool for vibrational spectroscopy. This method has turned out especially useful in case of large molecules that contain a M\"ossbauer active metal center. Recent applications to iron-sulfur proteins, to iron(II) spin crossover complexes and to tin-DNA complexes are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the combination of nuclear inelastic scattering and density functional calculations
