Monetary policy as a source of uncertainty
This paper proposes a model in which control variations induce an increase in the uncertainty of the system. The aim of our paper is to provide a stochastic theoretical model that can be used to explain under which uncertainty conditions monetary policy rules should be less or more aggressive, or, simply, applied or not.
Phase diagram of a model for a binary mixture of nematic molecules on a Bethe lattice
We investigate the phase diagram of a discrete version of the Maier-Saupe
model with the inclusion of additional degrees of freedom to mimic a
distribution of rodlike and disklike molecules. Solutions of this problem on a
Bethe lattice come from the analysis of the fixed points of a set of nonlinear
recursion relations. Besides the fixed points associated with isotropic and
uniaxial nematic structures, there is also a fixed point associated with a
biaxial nematic structure. Due to the existence of large overlaps of the
stability regions, we resorted to a scheme to calculate the free energy of
these structures deep in the interior of a large Cayley tree. Both
thermodynamic and dynamic-stability analyses rule out the presence of a biaxial
phase, in qualitative agreement with previous mean-field results
A basis of cranking operators for the pairing-plus-quadrupole model
We investigate the RPA normal-mode coordinates in the pairing-plus-quadrupole
model, with an eye on simplifying the application of large amplitude collective
motion techniques. At the Hartree-Bogoliubov minimum, the RPA modes are exactly
the cranking operators of the collective coordinate approach. We examine the
possibility of representing the self-consistent cranking operator by linear
combinations of a limited number of one-body operators. We study the Sm nuclei
as an example, and find that such representations exist in terms of operators
that are state-dependent in a characteristic manner.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, using IOP journal style files, to be published in

Statistical models of mixtures with a biaxial nematic phase
We consider a simple Maier-Saupe statistical model with the inclusion of
disorder degrees of freedom to mimic the phase diagram of a mixture of rod-like
and disc-like molecules. A quenched distribution of shapes leads to the
existence of a stable biaxial nematic phase, in qualitative agreement with
experimental findings for some ternary lyotropic liquid mixtures. An annealed
distribution, however, which is more adequate to liquid mixtures, precludes the
stability of this biaxial phase. We then use a two-temperature formalism, and
assume a separation of relaxation times, to show that a partial degree of
annealing is already sufficient to stabilize a biaxial nematic structure.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

Lithium and magnetic fields in giants. HD 232862 : a magnetic and lithium-rich giant star
We report the detection of an unusually high lithium content in HD 232862, a
field giant classified as a G8II star, and hosting a magnetic field. With the
spectropolarimeters ESPaDOnS at CFHT and NARVAL at TBL, we have collected high
resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra of three giants : HD 232862, KU Peg
and HD 21018. From spectral synthesis we have inferred stellar parameters and
measured lithium abundances that we have compared to predictions from
evolutionary models. We have also analysed Stokes V signatures, looking for a
magnetic field on these giants. HD 232862, presents a very high abundance of
lithium (ALi = 2.45 +/- 0.25 dex), far in excess of the theoretically value
expected at this spectral type and for this luminosity class (i.e, G8II). The
evolutionary stage of HD 232862 has been precised, and it suggests a mass in
the lower part of the [1.0 Msun ; 3.5 Msun ] mass interval, likely 1.5 to 2.0
solar mass, at the bottom of the Red Giant Branch. Besides, a time variable
Stokes V signature has been detected in the data of HD 232862 and KU Peg,
pointing to the presence of a magnetic field at the surface of these two
rapidly rotating active stars.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures ; accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic
