    The impact of congruence between perceived and preferred leadership on satisfaction among college student-athletes in Singapore

    Chelladurai developed the Multidimensional Model of Leadership, which was designed to be situation-specific to examine leadership behaviour and effectiveness in sporting contexts. Applying Chelladurai’s concept to the Singapore sporting context, this study aimed to assess the impact of congruence between perceived and preferred leadership behaviours on satisfaction with leadership among college student-athletes in Singapore. Data were collected from 185 college student-athletes enrolled in the five local tertiary institutes. The questionnaire utilized in this study consisted of the perception and preference versions of the Revised Leadership Scale for Sports and seven items measuring satisfaction with coaching leadership. Confirmatory factor analysis and a series of hierarchical multiple regression procedures were carried out to test the psychometric properties of the leadership scale and the hypothesized relationship between congruence levels and satisfaction. Results revealed congruence of perceived and preferred behaviour in social support was a significant indicator of athletes’ satisfaction. Possible implications from the findings were discussed in an effort to better understand coaching effectiveness in Singapore

    Does cause-related marketing work for negative image sponsor?

    Cause related marketing has been widely used by many companies with an expectation that it would improve its sales and public image. However, previous literature has not investigated the effect of cause related marketing when a sponsoring company has built negative image in the society. Thus, this study was designed to see if a company with a negative image can be benefitted from such a marketing effort. The magnitude and direction of changes in consumers’ attitudes toward two sponsoring companies with conflicting (positive vs. negative) brand images and toward a sport team were tested using paired t-tests. The results indicated that the subjects’ initial attitude toward the sport team was significantly changed in a positive direction when it was sponsored by a company with positive brand image (i.e., Nike). However, a change of attitude toward the company was not statistically significant. On the other hand, an initial attitude toward a company with negative image (i.e., Kangwon Land Hotel & Casino) improved significantly when it implemented cause-related marketing with a college sport team. However, their initial attitudes toward the sport team aggravated significantly when it was connected to a company with negative image in cause-related marketing

    Multiple domains of TonEBP cooperate to stimulate transcription in response to hypertonicity.

    Tonicity-responsive enhancer binding protein (TonEBP), also known as NFAT5, belongs to the Rel family of transcriptional activators. In the kidney medulla and thymus, TonEBP plays a major role in protecting renal cells and T cells from the deleterious effects of ambient hypertonicity. TonEBP is stimulated by hypertonicity via several pathways: increased expression of protein, nuclear translocation, and increased transactivation. In this study, we identified five domains of TonEBP involved in transactivation. The two conserved glutamine repeats were not involved in transactivation. There were three activation domains that could stimulate transcription independently. In addition, there were two modulation domains that potentiated the activity of the activation domains. One of the activation domains is unique to a splice isoform that is more active than others, indicating that alternative splicing can affect the activity of TonEBP. Another activation domain and one of the modulation domains were stimulated by hypertonicity. All the five domains acted in synergy in every combination. Although overall phosphorylation of TonEBP increased in response to hypertonicity, phosphorylation of the activation and modulation domains did not increase in isolation. In sum, TonEBP possesses far more elaborate domains involved in transactivation compared with other Rel proteins

    Dysfunction in Configural Face Processing in Patients With Schizophrenia

    Background: Face recognition has important implications for patients with schizophrenia, who exhibit poor interpersonal and social skills. Previous reports have suggested that patients with schizophrenia have deficits in their ability to recognize faces, and because face recognition relies heavily on information about the configuration of faces, we hypothesized that patients with schizophrenia would have specific problems in processing configural information. Methods: We measured the performance of 20 patients with schizophrenia and 20 normal subjects in a face-discrimination task, using upright and inverted pairs of face photographs that differed in featural or configural information. Results: The patients with schizophrenia showed disproportionately poorer performance in discriminating configural compared with featural face sets. Conclusion: The result suggests that the face-recognition deficit in schizophrenic patients is due to specific impairments in configural processing of faces

    Bone marrow-derived, alternatively activated macrophages enhance solid tumor growth and lung metastasis of mammary carcinoma cells in a Balb/C mouse orthotopic model

    INTRODUCTION: Tumor-associated macrophages, which are derived from the infiltration of circulating bone marrow-derived monocytes, consist primarily of a polarized M2 macrophage (M2-Mϕ) population and are associated with poor prognosis in various cancers. In the present study, we attempted to assess whether M2-Mϕs derived from bone marrow stimulate the promotion and progression of mammary tumors. METHODS: 4T1 murine mammary carcinoma cells were injected either alone or coupled with M2-Mϕs into the mammary fat pads of syngeneic female Balb/C mice. M2-Mϕs were prepared by treating monocytes isolated from female Balb/C mouse bone marrow with IL-4. Tumor cell growth was determined using an in vivo imaging system and the expression of cell proliferation-related, angiogenesis-related, and lymphangiogenesis-related proteins in tumor tissues was immunohistochemically analyzed. To evaluate the effects of the crosstalk between 4T1 cells and M2-Mϕs on the secretion and mRNA expression of cytokines and the migration of monocytes, 4T1 cells and M2-Mϕs were co-cultured and cytokine antibody array, real-time RT-PCR, and trans-well migration assays were conducted. RESULTS: The co-injection of M2-Mϕs into the mammary fat pads of mice increased solid tumor growth and lung metastasis of 4T1 cells as well as the infiltration of CD45(+ )leukocytes into tumor tissues. The proportions of Ki-67(+ )proliferating cells and the expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1α, vascular endothelial cell growth factor A, CD31, vascular endothelial cell growth factor C, and lymphatic vessel endothelial receptor-1 were increased significantly in the tumor tissues of mice co-injected with 4T1 cells and M2-Mϕs. The in vitro results revealed that the proliferation of 4T1 cells, the migration of monocytes, and the secretion of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, IFNγ, IL-1α, IL-2, IL-16, IFNγ-induced protein-10, keratinocyte-derived chemokine, macrophage colony-stimulating factor, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, macrophage inflammatory protein-1α, and RANTES were increased when 4T1 cells were co-cultured with M2-Mϕs, as compared with when the 4T1 cells were cultured alone. CONCLUSION: The crosstalk between 4T1 cells and M2-Mϕs increased the production of cytokines, which may have induced immune cell infiltration into tumor tissues, tumor cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and lymph angiogenesis, thereby increasing solid tumor growth and lung metastasis
