Objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an important public health problem and it is associated with systemic inflammation. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is one of the markers indicating platelet activation, and it was found to be high in many diseases related to inflammation. In previous studies reported different results evaluating of MPV in COPD. In this study, we aimed to evaluate of C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell (WBC), and MPV in acute exacerbation of COPD and stable COPD patients. Methods: In this retrospective study, data of 40 patients with acute exacerbation of COPD, 43 stable COPD patients and 40 healthy subjects were evaluated. Results: The mean MPV, CRP and WBC were found in control, stable COPD and acute exacerbation of COPD groups, 7.9±1.1; 8.2±1.3 and 8.7±1.6 fL; 3.4±1.2; 5.2±3.5 and 27.5±23.6 mg/L; 7.8±1.6; 8.1±2.1 and 11.4±4.5 x103/ ϻL, respectively. The mean WBC and CRP in the acute exacerbation of COPD group were significantly higher than the other groups (for both values p ˂0.001). The mean MPV in the acute exacerbation of COPD group was found higher than in the other groups. The mean MPV values were significantly higher in patients of acute exacerbation than control subjects (p=0.030). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the increased MPV may be a marker for the evaluation acute exacerbation of COPD as well as the classic acute phase reactant CRP. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is frequently used in drug delivery systems, microfluidic devices, biomedical systems and biosensors due to its tunable mechanical and surface properties. In recent studies, the traction forces in sub-nanoNewton were measured by interpreting the deformation of PDMS micropillars which are precisely patterned at the submicron scale. Although PDMS is a well-known viscoelastic material, researchers did not take viscoelastic properties into account while reporting Poisson’s ratio. The reported Poisson’s ratio for PDMS varies between 0.45 and 0.50 and is considered time-independent despite of its viscoelasticity. Defining Poisson’s ratio as a constant without referring to any strain definition provides an incomplete and incorrect picture. In this study, a detailed study of Poisson’s ratio of PDMS will be carried out by integrating a uniaxial tensile stretcher with an optical microscope to capture images of a certain area in the field of view during stretching. We took viscoelastic properties of PDMS and strain definition into account to make a complete and proper definition of Poisson’s ratio

In this thesis the novel concept of Sycophant Wireless Sensors (SWS) is introduced. A SWS network is a static ectoparasitic clandestine sensor network mounted incognito on a mobile agent using only the agent’s mobility without intervention. SWS networks not only communicate with each other through mobileWireless Sensor Networks (WSN) but also cooperate with them to form a global hybrid Wireless Sensor Network. Such a hybrid network has its own problems and opportunities, some of which have been studied in this thesis work. Assuming that direct position measurements are not always feasible tracking performance of the sycophant using range only measurements for various communication intervals is studied. Then this framework was used to create a hybrid 2D map of the environment utilizing the capabilities of the mobile network the sycophant. In order to show possible applications of a sycophant deployment, the sycophant sensor node was equipped with a laser ranger as its sensor, and it was let to create a 2D map of its environment. This 2D map, which corresponds to a height di erent than the follower network, was merged with the 2D map of the mobile network forming a novel rough 3D map. Then by giving up from the need to properly localize the sycophant even when it is disconnected to the rest of the network, a full 3D map of the environment is obtained by fusing 2D map and tracking capabilities of the mobile network with the 2D vertical scans of the environment by the sycophant. And finally connectivity problems that arise from the hybrid sensor/actuator network were solved. For this 2 new connectivity maintenance algorithms, one based on the helix structures of the proteins, and the other based on the acute triangulation of the space forming a Gabriel Graph, were introduced. In this new algorithms emphasis has been given to sparseness in order to increase fault tolerance to regional problems. To better asses sparseness a new measure, called Resistance was introduced, as well as another called updistance.Ph.D. - Doctoral Progra

We aimed to analyze the diagnostic value of mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width, which are also known as the markers of platelet count, in acute and perforated appendicitis. The data of 202 patients who applied to general surgery clinic in Mustafa Kemal University Hospital from 2007 to 2012 with acute appendicitis were analyzed retrospectively. The findings were separated to two groups due to the perforation status (perforated vs. non-perforated). Age, sex, leukocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean platelet volume, and platelet distribution width were examined. The mean age of the patients was 35.8. Twenty-one of all cases were perforated appendicitis (10.4 %), and the rest was acute appendicitis (non-perforated) (n = 181, 89.6 %). The mean platelet volume value was 9.8 ± 2.1 fL; mean thrombocyte count, 340.9 × 10(9)/L; and mean platelet distribution width value, 18.3 %. There were statistically significant differences between sex and age, hemoglobin, hematocrit, leukocyte, mean platelet volume, and platelet distribution width. There was a positive correlation between mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, and platelet. Age, leukocyte, platelet, mean platelet volume, and platelet distribution width were higher in cases with perforation as a comparison with non-perforated cases. We think that mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width may be valuable markers to detect the risk of perforation in early periods of acute appendicitis
