Using the ICF and psychological models of behavior to predict mobility limitations

Aims to test the ability of a model that integrates the theory of planned behavior (TPB) into the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) to predict walking limitations in adults awaiting hip or knee replacement surgery. Study Design and Participants: Cross-sectional structural equation modeling study of activity limitations in 190 adults. Method: A postal questionnaire measuring the TPB, ICF and walking limitations. Results: The integrated model accounted for more variance in activity limitations (57%) than either the TPB or ICF alone. Control beliefs (TPB) significantly mediated the relationship between impairment (ICF) and activity limitations. Conclusions: The integrated model provides an interdisciplinary theoretical framework that identifies intervention targets to effect reductions in disability without the need for concomitant reductions in impairment

The Role of Elementary Teacher Experience On Classroom Management Self-Efficacy: A Causal Comparative Study

This quantitative causal-comparative study sought to determine if there was a difference in self-efficacy with classroom management between different levels of experience among teachers: pre-service, novice, mid-career, and late-career. Classroom management is an aspect of education that many teachers have famously struggled with, resulting in an increasing number of teachers leaving the field. Strong classroom management self-efficacy among teachers results in higher confidence levels for managing disruptions and unwanted behavior within the classroom. For this study, 166 participants were drawn from a convenience sample of elementary, public, and charter school teachers and pre-service teacher candidates from universities within the state of Utah. The Efficacy in Classroom Management subscale of the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale was used to assess the strength of self-efficacy for teachers with different experience levels. An ANOVA tested if a difference in classroom management self-efficacy could be attributed to teachers with different classroom experience levels. The results of this study showed a statistically significant difference between the self-efficacy scores of novice teachers and late-career teachers. The data did not reveal a statistically significant difference between the self-efficacy scores of pre-service and mid-career teachers. This suggests that teaching experience may have some impact on self-efficacy, but other factors likely play a more significant role in determining skill in classroom management. Recommendations for future research are made, including doing a longitudinal study, different methods of data collection, or including other variables such as teacher motivation, burnout, and job satisfaction

Advantages of Executive Processing in Bilingual Students

A research study was conducted measuring the differences in attention control for bilingual English and Spanish speaking students and monolingual English-speaking students in second and third grade. Attention control was measured using a series of listening tasks, one being a singular listening task and one being a dichotic listening task. The students were asked to listen to audio recordings of English words and to recall the words that they remembered. The recall of the monolingual and bilingual students was recorded for each task and the mean differences between the singular and dichotic listening tasks were found for each group. The mean difference between the bilingual students’ recall for the singular and dichotic listening tasks was lower than the mean difference for the monolingual students, showing that the bilingual students’ recall without distraction was more similar to their recall with distraction. These findings support the hypothesis that the bilingual students would have significantly higher attending recall than the monolingual students, demonstrating their heightened ability to control their attention

dissertationTrichotillomania is an understudied chronic condition with unknown etiology and epidemiology that affects a significant number of girls and women. This study addressed the overarching question, What are the experiences and perceptions of women who engage in hair pulling? "Trichotillomania: A Journey of Personal Empowerment" was a qualitative study of 22 women that addressed their lived experience of hair pulling and their assigned meaning of their hair pulling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with each participant. A grounded theory approach to analysis was applied to the data. The narratives of the participants yielded an understanding of when and why hair pulling took hold, how others' conceptualizations of trichotillomania created barriers to accountability and acceptance, and how women empowered themselves to conceptualize their hair pulling and to determine the role that hair pulling plays in their lives. The women's conceptualizations of trichotillomania, based on their experiences and perceptions of their hair pulling, provided clear evidence for why it is so important to include hair pullers in the global conversation on trichotillomania
