This contribution demonstrates that during the first half of the 20th century historiography in Westfalen concentrated on both political aspects with a clearly defined target, the Prussian province of Westfalen and on anthropological considerations concerning «cultural popular areas» with one specific but changing object, Westfalen as a cultural space or a geographic entity. Up to the 1960s, because of campaigns advocating the specificity of Westfalen and the long lasting influence of its âmastersâ, Aubin and Petri, people in charge of historiography kept standing by their methods and considered it unnecessary to revise any of their approaches. Changes came up later in the 1960s only thanks to the new universities, at the national level, and to the orientations of academic researchers implementing the methods of social history at a regional level and thus giving âLandesgeschichteâ a new turn, to become âRegionalgeschichteâ

âWestforschungâ
Die Frage nach der UnterstĂŒtzung des nationalsozialistischen
Regimes durch die deutschen
Historiker und den KontinuitÀtslinien deutscher
Historiografie ĂŒber staatliche ZĂ€suren hinweg
ist bis heute ein aktuelles Thema. Dabei wird
zwar der generelle Forschungsbefund einer
âLegitimationswissenschaftâ kaum bestritten,
doch besteht unter anderem Uneinigkeit hinsichtlich
des AusmaĂes und der Konsequenzen
dieses Engagements und dessen Bedeutung.
Die bis heute kontrovers diskutierten Fragen
nach KontinuitÀt, DiskontinuitÀt, Ursprung
und Bedeutung des Verhaltens von Geisteswissenschaftlern
im NS-Regime werden von
den Herausgebern und Autoren des kĂŒrzlich
erschienenen Sammelbandes âGriff nach dem
Westen. Die âWestforschungâ der völkisch-nationalen
Wissenschaften zum nordwesteuropÀischen
Raum 1919-1960â wieder aufgegriffen.
Die Vielzahl von BeitrÀgen dieses Bandes, aber
auch das zeitgleiche Erscheinen weiterer Veröffentlichung
etwa zur deutschen Ostforschung
legen eine Betrachtungsweise nahe, bei der
nicht allein die Details anhand einer einzelnen
Publikation erörtert werden. Vielmehr sollte
auf das Symptomatische der Diskussion hingewiesen
werden. Insgesamt gibt der vorliegende
Band die Abfolge der Artikel und DiskussionsbeitrÀge
des Forums, welches auf H-Soz-u-Kult

A borderless Region? (Nazi-)German Westforschung and the German-Dutch-Belgian Borderland
This paper focuses on the historical research tradition of kulturraumforschung (the study of âcultural regions') as it was developed in germany before world war ii, and its impact, not only on the nazi program of border change in the 1930s and 1940s, but also on the contemporary political construction of a âde-borderedâ euregio meuse-rhine in the german-dutch-belgian borderland. The paper argues that the profound essentialism of this way of thinking is best replaced by constructivist and actor-oriented approaches based in the social sciences. Historically, we cannot overlook the impact of the formation of political borders in the 19th and 20th centuries. Political borders institutionalized national territories in the borderlands and promoted the construction of regional identities within a national context. The emerging border studies in geography and anthropology can help historians to develop a non-essentialist comparative interpretation of cross-border history in the meuse-rhine area
