De computer als leermiddel in het lager onderwijs

In het S. V.0.-project ' Leren met computers in het ondenvijs' werd de computer in het lager onderwijs vooral gebruikt voor 1. remediële doeleinden, en 2. het leren programmeren. Oefenprogramma's benutten bij uitstek de interactieve mogelijkheden van de computer. Gebruiksvormen: remedieel (voor enkele achterblijvers), aanvullend bij klassikaal onderwijs (voor alle leerlingen), verrijkend (voor enkele voorlopers). Computergestuurde oefening bleek statistisch geen significant grotere prestatiestijging op te leveren dan overeenkomstige schriftelijke oefening. Wel werd de motivatie en de concentratie er door vergroot. In het onderwijs van de toekomst zal de informatietechnogie een steeds belangrijker plaats innemen. Hierdoor zullen niet alleen leerlingen zelfstandiger kunnen leren maar zal ook het schoolse onderwijs effectiever kunnen verlopen

Early attempts at desistance from crime: Prisoners’ prerelease expectations and their postrelease criminal behavior

Recent attention has been paid to the role of a positive outlook in early stages of the desistance process. The aim of this article is to examine prisoners’ own expectations regarding future offending before they are released, and why these expectations come true or not after their release from prison. Longitudinal data were used from in-depth interviews with 24 prisoners who were interviewed at the end of their sentence and three months after release about their future outlook on criminal activities, social capital and agency factors, and current criminal activities. Not just any job will do: A study on employment characteristics and recidivism risks after release

Ex-prisoners’ recidivism risks are high. Several theories state that employment can reduce these risks but emphasize that the protective role of employment is conditional on job qualities (work intensity, job duration, etc.). Longitudinal research on the role of employment in ex-prisoners’ recidivism patterns is scarce, and most existing work used a simplistic employment measure (i.e., employed vs. unemployed), leaving the topic of job quality underexplored. This study examines the association between employment characteristics and recidivism among Dutch ex-prisoners. Using longitudinal data of the Prison Project (n = 714), we found that not just any job, but particularly stable employment and jobs with a higher occupational level could help reduce crime rates among these high-risk offenders. Many ex-prisoners face a human capital deficit that complicates the guidance to high-quality jobs. Sex Offenders in Prison: Are They Socially Isolated?

Empirical literature has revealed that social isolation can affect the rehabilitation of sex offenders after serving their sentence. This process of social isolation can already start during incarceration due to strained relationships with fellow prisoners and correctional staff. The current study examined to what extent sex offenders felt socially isolated during incarceration, using survey and registered conviction data on a large sample of male adult prisoners from the Prison Project. It was found that support from and relationships with correctional officers and fellow prisoners were perceived less positive by sex offenders than nonsex offenders. No evidence was found for higher levels of loneliness in sex offenders compared with prisoners convicted for a nonsexual offense. In sum, although the effects were small, sex offenders reported more social isolation during imprisonment compared with nonsex offenders.Criminal Justice: Legitimacy, accountability, and effectivit

Gezondheid van gevangenen voor en na detentie

Mensen met een slechte lichamelijke en geestelijke gezondheid zijn oververtegenwoordigd in de gevangenispopulatie. Onduidelijk is of die gezondheidsproblemen er al waren voor de detentie, of juist in de gevangenis zijn ontstaan of verergerd. In een gematcht cohortonderzoek op basis van Nivel Zorgregistraties Eerste Lijn en gevangenisgegevens is de gezondheid van gedetineerden in het jaar voor en het jaar na hun detentie vergeleken met die van niet-gedetineerden. Gedetineerden bleken al voor hun detentie relatief vaak psychische en sociale problemen te hebben. De gevangenschap zelf veranderde daar niet veel aan. (Ex-)gedetineerden blijven een kwetsbare patiëntengroep die ook buiten de gevangenis extra aandacht behoeft
