The Transformation Process of Fathers of Children with Disabilities: An Exploratory Case Study
While the vital role that fathers play in the development of their children is emphasized in recent literature, the majority of research relative to child development focuses on mothers. This imbalance is even more evident relative to research with parents of children with disabilities, leaving human service providers with few evidence based practices for appropriately addressing the needs of fathers raising children with disabilities. Research suggests that having a child with a disability, while challenging, can also have a significant positive impact on the family system and potentially offer a transformational experience for the parent. Guided by a theoretical model of transformational outcomes, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate how two veteran fathers of children with disabilities describe their transformative process. Using qualitative inquiry methods, the fathersā were interviewed and their narratives were transcribed and analyzed to discover emerging themes. Findings indicated that laughter was a prominent emotion throughout the narrative and that the fathers used both positive and negative descriptors to define their experiences. Implications of these findings for human service professionals supporting families of children with disabilities are discussed. Attending to the unique needs of fathers can improve the overall functionality of the family system
Macrophage-derived upd3 Cytokine causes impaired glucose homeostasis and reduced lifespan in drosophila fed a lipid-rich diet
Long-term consumption of fatty foods is associated with obesity, macrophage activation and inflammation, metabolic imbalance, and a reduced lifespan. We took advantage of Drosophila genetics to investigate the role of macrophages and the pathway(s) that govern their response to dietary stress. Flies fed a lipid-rich diet presented with increased fat storage, systemic activation of JAK-STAT signaling, reduced insulin sensitivity, hyperglycemia, and a shorter lifespan. Drosophila macrophages produced the JAK-STAT-activating cytokine upd3, in a scavenger-receptor (crq) and JNK-dependent manner. Genetic depletion of macrophages or macrophage-specific silencing of upd3 decreased JAK-STAT activation and rescued insulin sensitivity and the lifespan of Drosophila, but did not decrease fat storage. NF-ĪŗB signaling made no contribution to the phenotype observed. These results identify an evolutionarily conserved āscavenger receptor-JNK-type 1 cytokineā cassette in macrophages, which controls glucose metabolism and reduces lifespan in Drosophila maintained on a lipid-rich diet via activation of the JAK-STAT pathway
āDown the Language Rabbit Hole with Aliceā: A Case Study of a Deaf Girl with a Cochlear Implant
Alice, a deaf girl who was implanted after age three years of age was exposed to four weeks of storybook sessions conducted in American Sign Language (ASL) and speech (English). Two research questions were address: (1) how did she use her sign bimodal/bilingualism, codeswitching, and code mixing during reading activities and (2) what sign bilingual code-switching and code-mixing strategies did she use while attending to stories delivered under two treatments: ASL only and speech only. Retelling scores were collected to determine the type and frequency of her codeswitching/codemixing strategies between both languages after Alice was read to a story in ASL and in spoken English. Qualitative descriptive methods were utilized. Teacher, clinician and student transcripts of the reading and retelling sessions were recorded. Results showed Alice frequently used codeswitching and codeswitching strategies while retelling the stories retold under both treatments. Alice increased in her speech production retellings of the stories under both the ASL storyreading and spoken English-only reading of the story. The ASL storyreading did not decrease Alice's retelling scores in spoken English. Professionals are encouraged to consider the benefits of early sign bimodal/bilingualism to enhance the overall speech, language and reading proficiency of deaf children with cochlear implants
Heterodyne detection of the 752.033-GHz H2O rotational absorption line
A tunable high resolution two stage heterodyne radiometer was developed for the purpose of investigating the intensity and lineshape of the 752.033 GHz rotational transition of water vapor. Single-sideband system noise temperatures of approximately 45,000 K were obtained using a sensitive GaAs Schottky diode as the first stage mixer. First local oscillator power was supplied by a CO2 laser pumped formic acid laser (761.61 GHz), generating an X-band IF signal with theoretical line center at 9.5744 GHz. Second local oscillator power was provided by means of a 3 GHz waveguide cavity filter with only 9 dB insertion loss. In absorption measurements of the H2O taken from a laboratory simulation of a high altitude rocket plume, the center frequency of the 752 GHz line was determined to within 1 MHz of the reported value. A rotational temperature 75 K, a linewidth 5 MHz and a Doppler shift 3 MHz were measured with the line-of-sight intersecting the simulated-plume axis at a distance downstream of 30 nozzle diameters. These absorption data were obtained against continuum background radiation sources at temperatures of 1175 and 300 K

Abstract
While one can easily find reference to the contributions of numerous male educators to the development of the field of Adult Education, the contributions of women are not as evident in the literature. Hugo (2015) points out that women were the prime movers in the development of adult education in the 20th century when the definition of adult education is broadened to include āwomenās clubs, settlement house work, suffrage, and library developmentā (p. 20). Rose (2015) notes that women do the āgrunt workā because they focus their efforts on immediate, practical remedies. While womenās efforts were valued during the tough times of the Depression, their accomplishments were disregarded as adult education became a profession tied to universities run by men (Welton, 2010). Rose (2015) states that not only did women play a role in the development of adult education, but that āthey were integral to the development of adult education in the 20th centuryā (p. 4). This study explores the contributions of female educators whose leadership, power, and activism influenced the development of the field of adult education and their influence on the adult education arena in the 21st Century
Nonlinear Competition Between Small and Large Hexagonal Patterns
Recent experiments by Kudrolli, Pier and Gollub on surface waves,
parametrically excited by two-frequency forcing, show a transition from a small
hexagonal standing wave pattern to a triangular ``superlattice'' pattern. We
show that generically the hexagons and the superlattice wave patterns bifurcate
simultaneously from the flat surface state as the forcing amplitude is
increased, and that the experimentally-observed transition can be described by
considering a low-dimensional bifurcation problem. A number of predictions come

Radiative Transfer Equation Solver Module for Coupled Simulation of Hypersonic Flows
Accurate numerical modeling of the aerothermal environment around an ablation-cooled hypersonic re-entry vehicle requires high-fidelity models for processes such as non-equilibrium surface themochemistry, non-equilibrium pyrolysis chemistry, multi-scale radiation, spallation and charring. It is expected that, these models when utilized in a coupled manner will be able to accurately capture the possible nonlinear interactions between various phenomena in a computationally efficient manner. Development of a coupled radiative solver is currently being carried out as part of a joint effort between CFDRC, University of Michigan and University of Kentucky to develop a fully coupled method of simulating atmospheric entry flows and response of the thermal protection system. A key aspect of the project is development of a modular radiative transfer equation (RTE) solver which can be used in a tightly coupled manner with any hypersonic flow code. The code will be coupled with latest spectral property databases allowing almost line-by-line accuracy for radiative heat-fluxes on the spacecraft surface while still utilizing a multidimensional RTE formulation. The presentation will focus on architecture of the RTE solver, radiative property models that can be used in the solver and its interfacing with LeMANS aerothermal code for a simple demonstration case. The infrastructure to couple the solver with other codes of interest will be outlined
Polymer lattices as mechanically tunable 3-dimensional photonic crystals operating in the infrared
Broadly tunable photonic crystals in the near- to mid-infrared region could find use in spectroscopy, non-invasive medical diagnosis, chemical and biological sensing, and military applications, but so far have not been widely realized. We report the fabrication and characterization of three-dimensional tunable photonic crystals composed of polymer nanolattices with an octahedron unit-cell geometry. These photonic crystals exhibit a strong peak in reflection in the mid-infrared that shifts substantially and reversibly with application of compressive uniaxial strain. A strain of ā¼40% results in a 2.2āĪ¼m wavelength shift in the pseudo-stop band, from 7.3āĪ¼m for the as-fabricated nanolattice to 5.1āĪ¼m when strained. We found a linear relationship between the overall compressive strain in the photonic crystal and the resulting stopband shift, with a ā¼50ānm blueshift in the reflection peak position per percent increase in strain. These results suggest that architected nanolattices can serve as efficient three-dimensional mechanically tunable photonic crystals, providing a foundation for new opto-mechanical components and devices across infrared and possibly visible frequencies
