Influence of the lattice topography on a three-dimensional, controllable Brownian motor
We study the influence of the lattice topography and the coupling between
motion in different directions, for a three-dimensional Brownian motor based on
cold atoms in a double optical lattice. Due to controllable relative spatial
phases between the lattices, our Brownian motor can induce drifts in arbitrary
directions. Since the lattices couple the different directions, the relation
between the phase shifts and the directionality of the induced drift is non
trivial. Here is therefore this relation investigated experimentally by
systematically varying the relative spatial phase in two dimensions, while
monitoring the vertically induced drift and the temperature. A relative spatial
phase range of 2pi x 2pi is covered. We show that a drift, controllable both in
speed and direction, can be achieved, by varying the phase both parallel and
perpendicular to the direction of the measured induced drift. The experimental
results are qualitatively reproduced by numerical simulations of a simplified,
classical model of the system
A nonadiabatic semi-classical method for dynamics of atoms in optical lattices
We develop a semi-classical method to simulate the motion of atoms in a
dissipative optical lattice. Our method treats the internal states of the atom
quantum mechanically, including all nonadiabatic couplings, while position and
momentum are treated as classical variables. We test our method in the
one-dimensional case. Excellent agreement with fully quantum mechanical
simulations is found. Our results are much more accurate than those of earlier
semi-classical methods based on the adiabatic approximation.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to European Physical Journal
Optimal molecular alignment and orientation through rotational ladder climbing
We study the control by electromagnetic fields of molecular alignment and
orientation, in a linear, rigid rotor model. With the help of a monotonically
convergent algorithm, we find that the optimal field is in the microwave part
of the spectrum and acts by resonantly exciting the rotation of the molecule
progressively from the ground state, i.e., by rotational ladder climbing. This
mechanism is present not only when maximizing orientation or alignment, but
also when using prescribed target states that simultaneously optimize the
efficiency of orientation/alignment and its duration. The extension of the
optimization method to consider a finite rotational temperature is also
presented.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure
Reaching optimally oriented molecular states by laser kicks
We present a strategy for post-pulse orientation aiming both at efficiency
and maximal duration within a rotational period. We first identify the
optimally oriented states which fulfill both requirements. We show that a
sequence of half-cycle pulses of moderate intensity can be devised for reaching
these target states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Pengaruh Komposisi Nano Semen Terhadap Kuat Tekan Mortar
The micro voids in the cement paste of cementitious material drastically reduce the load-carrying capacity of the element, due to the reduction in area. On the other hand, the weak interface between aggregates and mortar induces micro-crack initiation and promote crack propagation. It therefore becomes curial to reduce the voids in the mortar, and promotes a better hydration degree of cement. A method that has been proven effective is the use of nano-cement particles. The smaller cement particles will result in a better hydration process, and create less large ettringites and calcium hydrates. This research work studied the effect of nano-cement percentage in the mortar mix by the substitution method. The ratio in weight of the nano-cement with respect to the normal cement ranged from 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, to 100%. The specimens sized 50 × 50 × 50 mm were tested at the age of 28 days to obtain their compression strength. The cement-to-sand proportion was 1 to 2.75, while a water-cement-ratio of 0.485 was maintained throughout the experiments. Two cement types, PCC (Portland Composite Cement) and PPC (Portland Pozzolane Cement), all Indonesian based products, were compared to obtain a picture of the overall cement condition in Indonesia, and the effectiveness of the nano-cement use to each of the types
Development of a telescope for medium-energy gamma-ray astronomy
The Advanced Energetic Pair Telescope (AdEPT) is being developed at GSFC as a future NASA MIDEX mission to explore the medium-energy (5–200 MeV) gamma-ray range. The enabling technology for AdEPT is the Three- Dimensional Track Imager (3-DTI), a gaseous time projection chamber. The high spatial resolution 3-D electron tracking of 3-DTI enables AdEPT to achieve high angular resolution gamma-ray imaging via pair production and triplet production (pair production on electrons) in the medium-energy range. The low density and high spatial resolution of 3-DTI allows the electron positron track directions to be measured before they are dominated by Coulomb scattering. Further, the significant reduction of Coulomb scattering allows AdEPT to be the first medium-energy gamma-ray telescope to have high gamma-ray polarization sensitivity. We review the science goals that can be addressed with a medium-energy pair telescope, how these goals drive the telescope design, and the realization of this design with AdEPT. The AdEPT telescope for a future MIDEX mission is envisioned as a 8 m3 active volume filled with argon at 2 atm. The design and performance of the 3-DTI detectors for the AdEPT telescope are described as well as the outstanding instrument challenges that need to be met for the AdEPT mission
Demonstration of a controllable three-dimensional Brownian motor in symmetric potentials
We demonstrate a Brownian motor, based on cold atoms in optical lattices,
where isotropic random fluctuations are rectified in order to induce controlled
atomic motion in arbitrary directions. In contrast to earlier demonstrations of
ratchet effects, our Brownian motor operates in potentials that are spatially
and temporally symmetric, but where spatiotemporal symmetry is broken by a
phase shift between the potentials and asymmetric transfer rates between them.
The Brownian motor is demonstrated in three dimensions and the noise-induced
drift is controllable in our system.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Vulnerability analysis of satellite-based synchronized smart grids monitoring systems
The large-scale deployment of wide-area monitoring systems could play a strategic role in supporting the evolution of traditional power systems toward smarter and self-healing grids. The correct operation of these synchronized monitoring systems requires a common and accurate timing reference usually provided by a satellite-based global positioning system. Although these satellites signals provide timing accuracy that easily exceeds the needs of the power industry, they are extremely vulnerable to radio frequency interference. Consequently, a comprehensive analysis aimed at identifying their potential vulnerabilities is of paramount importance for correct and safe wide-area monitoring system operation. Armed with such a vision, this article presents and discusses the results of an experimental analysis aimed at characterizing the vulnerability of global positioning system based wide-area monitoring systems to external interferences. The article outlines the potential strategies that could be adopted to protect global positioning system receivers from external cyber-attacks and proposes decentralized defense strategies based on self-organizing sensor networks aimed at assuring correct time synchronization in the presence of external attacks
Gaseous Dark Matter Detectors
Dark Matter detectors with directional sensitivity have the potential of
yielding an unambiguous positive observation of WIMPs as well as discriminating
between galactic Dark Matter halo models. In this article, we introduce the
motivation for directional detectors, discuss the experimental techniques that
make directional detection possible, and review the status of the experimental
effort in this field.Comment: 19 pages, review on gaseous directional dark matter detectors
