Vortex solutions in the noncommutative torus
Vortex configurations in the two-dimensional torus are considered in
noncommutative space. We analyze the BPS equations of the Abelian Higgs model.
Numerical solutions are constructed for the self-dual and anti-self dual cases
by extending an algorithm originally developed for ordinary commutative space.
We work within the Fock space approach to noncommutative theories and the
Moyal-Weyl connection is used in the final stage to express the solutions in
configuration space.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
Comments on the U(2) noncommutative instanton
We discuss the 't Hoof ansatz for instanton solutions in noncommutative U(2) Yang-Mills theory. We show that the extension of the ansatz leading to singular solutions in the commutative case, yields to non self-dual (or self-antidual) configurations in noncommutative space-time. A proposal leading to selfdual solutions with Q=1 topological charge (the equivalent of the regular BPST ansatz) can be engineered, but in that case the gauge field and the curvature are not Hermitian (although the resulting Lagrangian is real).Facultad de Ciencias Exacta
Impact of pulmonary hypertension and congenital heart disease with hemodynamic repercussion on the severity of acute respiratory infections in children under 5 years of age at a pediatric referral center in Colombia, South America
Acute respiratory infection is one of the main causes of morbidity in children. Some studies have suggested that pulmonary hypertension and congenital heart disease with haemodynamic repercussion increase the severity of respiratory infections, but there are few publications in developing countries.
Methods:
This was a prospective cohort study evaluating the impact of pulmonary hypertension and congenital heart disease (CHD) with haemodynamic repercussion as predictors of severity in children under 5 years of age hospitalised for acute respiratory infection.
Results:
Altogether, 217 children hospitalised for a respiratory infection who underwent an echocardiogram were evaluated; 62 children were diagnosed with CHD with haemodynamic repercussion or pulmonary hypertension. Independent predictors of admission to intensive care included: pulmonary hypertension (RR 2.14; 95% CI 1.06–4.35, p = 0.034), respiratory syncytial virus (RR 2.52; 95% CI 1.29–4.92, p = 0.006), and bacterial pneumonia (RR 3.09; 95% CI 1.65–5.81, p = 0.000). A significant difference was found in average length of hospital stay in children with the cardiovascular conditions studied (p = 0.000).
Conclusions:
Pulmonary hypertension and CHD with haemodynamic repercussion as well as respiratory syncytial virus and bacterial pneumonia were predictors of severity in children with respiratory infections in this study. Early recognition of cardiovascular risks in paediatric populations is necessary to lessen the impact on respiratory infections
Native plants from Argentina reported as effective against Leishmania spp.
Leishmaniasis represents a spectrum of diseases caused by infection with protozoan pathogens of the genus Leishmania. It is a major neglected tropical disease associated with high rates of disability and death, with extended endemic areas in the Americas. Despite current therapeutic approaches, current treatments for leishmaniasis are unsatisfactory due to high associated toxicity, cost, complex administration and the emergence of resistant strains. Because of this, efforts have greatly increased over the last decade to identify novel compounds with anti-leishmanial properties. Thus, one strategy in the search for new compounds is the screening of molecules purified from plant sources. The current work reviewed the available information about the Argentinean natural sources reported as effective against Leishmania spp; including: its relevant chemical compounds, efficiency and applied methodology. Reported studies need to be considered as precursors works to extend the search between the profuse native plants from Argentina.Fil: Lozano, Esteban Sebastián. A KK-monopole giant graviton in AdS_5 x Y_5
We construct a new giant graviton solution in AdS_5 x Y_5, with Y_5 a
quasi-regular Sasaki-Einstein manifold, consisting on a Kaluza-Klein monopole
wrapped around the Y_5 and with its Taub-NUT direction in AdS_5. We find that
this configuration has minimal energy when put in the centre of AdS_5, where it
behaves as a massless particle. When we take Y_5 to be S^5, we provide a
microscopical description in terms of multiple gravitational waves expanding
into the fuzzy S^5 defined as an S^1 bundle over the fuzzy CP^2. Finally we
provide a possible field theory dual interpretation of the construction.Comment: 11 pages, published versio
Characterization of activated carbon fiber/polyaniline materials by position-resolved microbeam small-angle X-ray scattering
Activated carbon fiber (ACF)/polyaniline (PANI) materials have been prepared using two different methods, viz. chemical and electrochemical polymerization. Electrochemical characterization of both materials shows that the electrodes with polyaniline have a higher capacitance than does a pristine porous carbon electrode. To analyze the distribution of PANI within the ACF, characterization by position-resolved microbeam small-angle X-ray scattering (μSAXS) has been carried out. μSAXS results obtained with a single ACF indicate that, for the experimental conditions used, a PANI coating is formed inside the micropores and that it is higher in the external regions of the ACF than in the core. Additionally, it seems that the penetration of PANI inside the fibers occurs in a larger extent for the chemical polymerization or, in other words, for the electrochemically polymerized sample there is a slightly larger accumulation of PANI in the external regions of the ACF.Fil: Salinas-Torres, D.. The baryon vertex with magnetic flux
In this letter we generalise the baryon vertex configuration of AdS/CFT by
adding a suitable instantonic magnetic field on its worldvolume, dissolving
D-string charge. A careful analysis of the configuration shows that there is an
upper bound on the number of dissolved strings. This should be a manifestation
of the stringy exclusion principle. We provide a microscopical description of
this configuration in terms of a dielectric effect for the dissolved strings.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures. V2: reference added. V3: version to appear in

NLRP3-inflammasome inhibition prevents high fat and high sugar diets-induced heart damage through autophagy induction
The NLRP3-inflammasome complex has emerged as an important component of
inflammatory processes in metabolic dysfunction induced by high-caloric diets. In
this study, we investigate the molecular mechanisms by which NLRP3 inhibition may
attenuate diet-induced cardiac injury. Here we show the cardiac damage induced
by high sugar diet (HSD), high fat diet (HFD) or high sugar/fat diet (HSFD) over
15 weeks. Genetic ablation of NLRP3 protected against this damage by autophagy
induction and apoptotic control. Furthermore, NLRP3 inhibition by the selective small
molecule MCC950 resulted in similar autophagy induction and apoptotic control in
hearts after diets. These data were reproduced in THP-1 cells treated with MCC950 and
cultured in media supplemented with serum from mice dosed with MCC950 and fed
with diets. NLRP3 inhibition exerted beneficial metabolic, and autophagic adaptations
in hearts from obesogenic diets. The inhibition of NLRP3 activation may hold promise
in the treatment of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.Junta de Andalucía CTS113Junta de Andalucia PI-0036-201
