An 8-year-old, 4 kg, intact female, domestic shorthaired cat was referred for tachypnea and pleural effusion. A 24-h Holter recording showed numerous polymorphic ventricular premature complexes with left and right bundle branch block morphology. Echocardiographic examination revealed right atrial and ventricular dilation. The right ventricular free wall was thin and aneurysmal. The cat died 10 days after initiation of antiarrhythmic therapy. Gross and histopathological findings were consistent with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) associated with severe left ventricular involvement

Hybrid system simulation to supply heated air to a solar food dryer

    Get PDF
The intermittence of solar radiation, due to continuous rainy or cloudy days, is a limitation of simple and small solar dryers. These conditions often make them impossible to use. By including storage systems (thermal accumulation) and/or auxiliary energy sources, drying processes or dehydration can be conducted continuously, even during periods of low insolation. Therefore, the present work simulates and evaluates the thermal and energetic behavior of a hybrid system for heating the air that is directed to the dehydration chamber of a solar food dryer. The software selected for the simulation was TRNSYS. The simulated hybrid system consists of a flat plate solar collector and an arrangement of electrical resistors that guarantee the entry of air, at a constant temperature, into the dehydration chamber. The target temperature selected is 70 °C, and the absence of food products in the chamber is assumed. An arrangement with four electric resistors totaling 1900 W, with three different powers of 1000 W, 500 W, and 200 W proved adequate to guarantee the entrance of air at a constant temperature when considering the climatic conditions of a city in the South of Brazil

Propuesta de Métricas para Proyectos de Explotación de Información

    Get PDF

Rolling contact fatigue behavior of dual-phase austempered ductile iron

    Get PDF
In this work the rolling contact fatigue (RCF) behavior of dual-phase austempered ductile iron (ADI) was studied and compared to that of conventional ADI. The effect of surface finishing (manual vs. automatic grinding) on the surface properties and RCF endurance was also analyzed. RCF tests were performed in a flat washer type testing rig and using lubricated pure rolling conditions. RCF tests results were analyzed using the two-parameter Weibull distribution and the Weibayes method. The results indicated that the dual-phase ADI metal matrix was composed of 94% ausferrite and 6% free allotriomorphic ferrite, approximately. The hardness of conventional ADI was higher than that of dual-phase ADI. The residual stresses were compressive in all the cases with similar average values for ADI and dual-phase ADI. Relative to manual grinding, the automatic process increased slightly the surface hardness and reduced by around a 50% the residual stresses of both ADI and dual-phase ADI. Regarding RCF, failures were characterized by the typical concentrated damage in the form of spalls. No significant differences in the RCF endurance of ADI and dual-phase ADI were observed. No differences in the RCF endurance attributable to the surface finishing method were identified in the current tests.Fil: Colombo, Diego Alejandro. Effect of Ti addition and cast part size on solidification structure and mechanical properties of medium carbon, low alloy cast steel

    Get PDF
In this work, the effect of Ti addition and the cast part size on the solidification structure and mechanical properties of a medium carbon, low alloy cast steel was analyzed. The experimental analysis involved the design of the melts by using Thermo-Calc® software, where different amounts of Ti added to a standard chemical composition of an AISI 13XX steel were simulated. Then, the solidification macrostructure (dendritic pattern and grain size) and microstructure were characterized by using conventional and specific metallographic techniques. Finally, the mechanical behavior in terms of hardness and tensile properties were evaluated. The results show that the addition of 0.12% of Ti promotes a fine dispersion of Ti nitrides and carbides, but when the Ti concentration raises to 0.2%, the size of the Ti nitrides and carbides increases while its amount decreases. Ti nitrides and carbides particles act as nucleation sites for the precipitation of ferrite from austenite, and it was found that the addition of Ti in the higher concentrations refines the solidification macrostructure (dendritic pattern) for both cast part sizes evaluated. Regarding mechanical properties, the addition of Ti does not significantly vary the ultimate tensile strength but reduces the total elongation for cast part size

New distribution records, habitat description and comments on the natural history of the poorly known frog Atelognathus solitarius (Anura, Batrachylidae) from northwestern Patagonia, Río Negro Province, Argentina

    Get PDF
Atelognathus solitarius is probably the least-known species of its genus. The species was described in 1970 based on a single specimen from the Las Bayas Creek, Río Negro Province, Argentina; later publications that reported new specimens did not provide new localities. Here, we present an update of its distribution, describe the habitats it occupies, detail features of its natural history, and discuss conservation aspects. For this purpose, all available records were compiled from herpetological collections, literature, and new data obtained during field trips to the type locality and surroundings. We confirmed the presence of the species near its type locality and extended the known distribution about 30 km WSW and 30 km NW. Furthermore, we discovered that in addition to using small streams, A. solitarius uses lagoons in volcanic tablelands. Future studies on the biological and ecological aspects of the species are essential to update the current conservation category of ‘Insufficiently Known’ for Argentinean categorization or ‘Data Deficient’ for IUCN.Fil: Barrasso, Diego Andrés. On the presence of Alsodes coppingeri (Anura, Alsodidae) in Argentina, with comments on other southern Alsodes

    Get PDF
The occurrence of Alsodes coppingeri is confirmed in Argentina for the first time, from Santa Cruz Province, close to the Lago del Desierto. Specimens of this species were identified according to external morphology and DNA sequences. These new records in Argentina are at the same latitude than the type locality (Puerto Río Frío, Chile) about 100 km eastwards in a straight-line, but at the opposite side of the Andes mountain range and the Southern Continental Ice Fields. Five localities from Chile (Caleta Tortel, Canal Michel, Laguna Caiquenes, Puerto Yungay, and Villa O’Higgins) are around 100 km north from our records, in a lower region of the Andes located between the Northern and Southern Continental Ice Fields. This region with discontinuous permanent ice sheet-cover may have acted as a corridor for amphibian species that are currently distributed on both sides of the Andes range.Fil: Barrasso, Diego Andrés. One room dwellings. Social reproduction strategies in domestic context from Pueblo Viejo de Tucute

    Get PDF
Pueblo Viejo de Tucute (Puna de Jujuy, Argentina), dated in the Regional Development Period, shows a distinctive architectural pattern with hundreds of circular dwellings built on stone walled terraces. Nine of these round houses have been test pitted and two of them have been fully excavated. The comparison between these houses, regarding their setting and their associated archaeological materials, allows us to propose differences and similarities regarding the organization and use of the domestic spaces, and also to inquire about the social status of the inhabitants of both archaeological households. The identification of fixed and semi-fixed architectural features and the analysis of the recovered artifacts show different activities related to economic and social reproduction strategies. Basic biological and material aspects, productive activities and symbolic practices associated with communal reproduction are recognized. Data from colonial chronicles and ethnographic studies from the Bolivian altiplano from the first half of the 20th century describe the way of life and the use of dwellings with similar characteristics.Fil: Basso, Diego Martín.
