CONFLICTS OF GESTURES, CONFLICTS OF IMAGES
The article presents some notes for an anthropology of the gestures of uprising [souleÌvement]. It argues that, just as sounds (screams, words, slogans) always come out of the mouth of the demonstra- tors, images of all kinds are also brandished at the end of their arms. Based on this the article raises the question of the very notion of a desire for uprising
Sampling Chaos
This article deals with a particular aspect of the genesis of the Bilderatlas Mnemosyne composed by Aby Warburg between 1927 and 1929. It has to do with his reaction to the events of the Great War, a reaction which is at the same time âpatheticâ (even âpathologicalâ) and âepistemicâ (that is to say methodological). If the history of culture amounts, for Warburg, to a great âpsychomachiaâ of the astra and the monstra, as he said, then it seems evident that the war for him was a direct test of his âscience of cultureâ (Kulturwissenschaft). It is no surprise that between 1914 and 1918 Warburg created a large iconographic collection of the war whose theoretical foundations I wish here to examine by comparing it with the efforts of his contemporaries in Germany and France (notably in the work of Lucien Febvre and Marc Bloch).

In spite of the many ideological and theoretical uses that are made of it, Eisenstein sets in motion a heterodox dialectic. He never reduces his âtruthâ to an absolute knowledge, nor to an absolute position. In his dialectic there is a constant interaction between mythos and logos, between pathos and praxis. The understanding of contemporary Mexico that is proposed by Que Viva Mexico ! includes the countryâs myths, beliefs, rituals, traditions, everything that makes up the temporal material from which the Mexicans can draw the energy to free themselves from their centuries-old alienation and to discover their revolutionary future. Likewise the understanding of revolutionary praxis appeals to pathos, which provides the pre-conditions for the bodily taking of action, i.e. the bodily changes of subjects touched by history and the historical changes enacted by politicised subjects. This heterodox dialectic has often been misunderstood or denied. Thus Roland Barthes rejected mythos as a lie in relation to historical praxis (in favour of Ă©pos, for example), just as he rejected pathos as an aesthetic lie contained within âshockâ effects (in favour of punctum, for example). While he was rightly suspicious of âmediaâ images of pain, of sensationalism and sentimentality, at the same time he simplified the problem in such an elegant fashion that his disciples have tended to reproduce his simplifications uncritically and have adopted a posture of distance that mistakes for a critical gaze what is often no more than a refusal to look. By re-engaging with Barthesâs analysis of âa few photogramsâ of Battleship Potemkin, this article demonstrates that pathos plays a key role in any historical praxi
In offener Formation
