The impact of a standardized participant simulation learning experience on the critical thinking disposition of undergraduate health administration students.

The purpose of this action research study was (a) to observe the impact of simulation on the critical thinking disposition of undergraduate students in a health administration program, and (b) to observe faculty perceptions of the efficacy of simulation as a training and evaluative tool for undergraduate students in a health administration program. The California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) was used to measure critical thinking disposition in an experimental group of subjects before and after a simulation, and in a control group of subjects who did not undergo simulation. The experimental group scored higher on the post-test CCTDI than on the pre-test, and overall scores from the experimental group post-test were higher than those of the control group. Qualitative findings demonstrated that simulation challenged subjects in areas germane to critical thinking, such as leadership and interpersonal communication. Faculty observers of the simulations recognized that simulation-teaching techniques can be useful for management, leadership, and ethics instruction, and that simulation can be useful as a tool to evaluate technical and conceptual competencies of undergraduate students in a health administration program. Additionally, the research demonstrated how simulation could provide a concrete experience, which launches experiential learning that, in turn, has the potential to improve critical thinking. A simulation/ experiential learning model is also suggested

Surgical Treatment of Primary Malignant Melanoma of the Esophagus : A Case Report

    Get PDF
Primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus (PMME) is an extremely rare tumor with only scattered cases reported. Although surgical resection has been considered as the best possible option, the prognosis has been nonetheless poor. We report a case of PMME which was treated by surgical resection and additionally followed by chemotherapy. A 60-yr-old man underwent an esophagoscopy due to a 3-month history of dysphagia and upper abdominal discomfort. A pigmented polypoid mass in the lower third of the esophagus was discovered, and a biopsy identified the mass as a malignant melanoma. Consequently, a subtotal esophagectomy and intrathoracic esophagogastrostomy was carried out. At follow-up four months after discharge, lymph node enlargements in the cervical area and celiac axis area were found. As a result, the patients was started on systemic chemotherapy treatment, which included Dacarbazine. The patient has been doing well and is now 35 months post-operative

Updating Standard Procedures for Diagnosis and Treatment of Congenital Rubella Case

Congenital Rubella is the dramatic consequence of rubella during gestation. A combined strategy of Measles and Rubella universal vaccination on children and selective vaccination of susceptible women has been shown effective in the elimination of congenital rubella requiring an incidence of <1 case of CRS per 100,000 live births. Verification processes of rubella elimination require that physicians early and appropriately diagnose all cases of congenital rubella, including those unpatent at birth. The paper highlights clinical and laboratory aspects channeling diagnosis of congenital rubella infection or syndrome even after the first year of life, and the short- and long-term management criteria
