    Tactical missile turbulence problems

    Of particular interest is atmospheric turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer, since this affects both the launch and terminal phase of flight, and the total flight for direct fire systems. Brief discussions are presented on rocket artillery boost wind problems, mean wind correction, turbulent boost wind correction, the Dynamically Aimed Free Flight Rocket (DAFFR) wind filter, the DAFFR test, and rocket wake turbulence problems. It is concluded that many of the turbulence problems of rockets and missiles are common to those of aircraft, such as structural loading and control system design. However, these problems have not been solved at this time

    Generalised knot groups distinguish the square and granny knots (with an appendix by David Savitt)

    Given a knot K we may construct a group G_n(K) from the fundamental group of K by adjoining an nth root of the meridian that commutes with the corresponding longitude. These "generalised knot groups" were introduced independently by Wada and Kelly, and contain the fundamental group as a subgroup. The square knot SK and the granny knot GK are a well known example of a pair of distinct knots with isomorphic fundamental groups. We show that G_n(SK) and G_n(GK) are non-isomorphic for all n>1. This confirms a conjecture of Lin and Nelson, and shows that the isomorphism type of G_n(K), n>1, carries more information about K than the isomorphism type of the fundamental group.     On Algebras of Finite Representation Type

    Since D. G. Higman proved that bounded representation type and finite representation type are equivalent for group algebras at prime characteristic, there has been a renewed interest in the Brauer-Thrall conjecture that bounded representation type implies finite representation type for arbitrary algebras. The main purpose of this paper is to present a new approach to this conjecture by showing the relevance (when the base field is algebraically closed) of questions concerning the structure of indecomposable modules of certain special types, namely, the stable (every maximal submodule is indecomposable), the costable (having the dual property), and the stable-costable (having both properties) indecomposable modules. The main tools are the Sandwich Lemma (1.2) which is proved using an old observation of É. Goursat, an observation of A. Heller, C. W. Curtis, and D. Zelinsky concerning quasifrobenius (QF) rings (Proposition 2.1), and a general interlacing technique similar to methods used by Jans, Tachikawa, and Colby for building up large indecomposable modules of finite length which has validity in any abelian category (Theorem 3.1)

    Modeling the University Decision Process: The Effects of Faculty Participation in University Decision Making

    This paper develops models of decision making in a university setting with and without faculty participation. The models predict values for the level of services or programs offered and the quality of those services in a university setting for either private nonprofit or public universities. These predictions indicate conditions under which outcomes are similar or differ with faculty participation in the decision process. The model predicts that without shared governance that universities may overinvest in non-academic quality (e.g. athletics, recreational activities). This would be exacerbated in for-profit forms of higher education. Notably, nonprofit and/or public institutions are not inefficient relative to for-profit institutions, which questions the rationale for subsidies to for-profit institutions.
