L’Irlande à l’Époque de la Révolution française
On relève de nombreuses études historiques récentes portant sur l’Irlande à l’époque de la Révolution française. Cette vague s’explique par la grande importance des événements révolutionnaires français sur une société irlandaise très divisée et par le fait que le bicentenaire de la montée et du déclin du mouvement des Irlandais Unis, celui de la Grande Rébellion de 1798 et enfin de l’acte d’Union de 1800 entre la Grande-Bretagne et l’Irlande, ont donné lieu à de nombreux colloques et suscité un grand intérêt pour l’histoire irlandaise de la période. Cet article s’attache à recenser cette littérature récente et à analyser la manière dont les historiens perçoivent le radicalisme et le loyalisme irlandais des années 1790, la rébellion de 1798 et le débat contradictoire sur l’acte d’Union de 1800.Ireland in the Age of the French Revolution. There has been a flood of recent scholarly publications on Ireland in the age of the French Revolution because the dramatic events in France had a very great impact on the divided nature of Irish society and because the bicentenary of the rise and fall of the United Irishmen, the Irish rebellion of 1798 and the Act of Union between Britain and Ireland in 1800 all led to many academic conferences and encouraged a great interest in Irish history in this period. This essay surveys this recent literature and explores how scholars now perceive Irish radicalism and loyalism in the 1790s, the rebellion of 1798 and the debate fort and against the Act of Union of 1800

Dynamic Phase Transitions in Cell Spreading
We monitored isotropic spreading of mouse embryonic fibroblasts on
fibronectin-coated substrates. Cell adhesion area versus time was measured via
total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy. Spreading proceeds in
well-defined phases. We found a power-law area growth with distinct exponents
a_i in three sequential phases, which we denote basal (a_1=0.4+-0.2), continous
(a_2=1.6+-0.9) and contractile (a_3=0.3+-0.2) spreading. High resolution
differential interference contrast microscopy was used to characterize local
membrane dynamics at the spreading front. Fourier power spectra of membrane
velocity reveal the sudden development of periodic membrane retractions at the
transition from continous to contractile spreading. We propose that the
classification of cell spreading into phases with distinct functional
characteristics and protein activity patterns serves as a paradigm for a
general program of a phase classification of cellular phenotype. Biological
variability is drastically reduced when only the corresponding phases are used
for comparison across species/different cell lines.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Spitzer infrared spectrometer 16μm observations of the GOODS fields
We present Spitzer 16μm imaging of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) fields. We survey
150 arcmin^2 in each of the two GOODS fields (North and South), to an average 3σ depth of 40 and 65 μJy,
respectively. We detect ~1300 sources in both fields combined. We validate the photometry using the 3–24μm
spectral energy distribution of stars in the fields compared to Spitzer spectroscopic templates. Comparison with
ISOCAM and AKARI observations in the same fields shows reasonable agreement, though the uncertainties are
large. We provide a catalog of photometry, with sources cross-correlated with available Spitzer, Chandra, and
Hubble Space Telescope data. Galaxy number counts show good agreement with previous results from ISOCAM
and AKARI with improved uncertainties. We examine the 16–24μm flux ratio and find that for most sources it
lies within the expected locus for starbursts and infrared luminous galaxies. A color cut of S_(16)/S_(24) > 1.4 selects
mostly sources which lie at 1.1 < z < 1.6, where the 24μm passband contains both the redshifted 9.7 μm silicate
absorption and the minimum between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission peaks. We measure the integrated
galaxy light of 16μm sources and find a lower limit on the galaxy contribution to the extragalactic background
light at this wavelength to be 2.2 ± 0.2 nW m^(−2) sr^(−1)
Magna Carta: History, context and influence: Papers delivered at Peking University on the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta
This book examines the history and influence of Magna Carta in British and American history. In a series of essays written by notable British specialists, it considers the origins of the document in the political and religious contexts of the thirteenth century, the relevance of its principles to the seventeenth century disputes that led to the Civil War, the uses made of Magna Carta to justify the American Revolution, and its inspiration of the radical-democratic movement in Britain in the early nineteenth century. The introductory essay considers the celebration of Magna Carta's 800th anniversary in 2015 in relation to ceremonials and remembrance in Britain in general. Given as papers to a joint conference of British and Chinese historians in Beijing in 2015, these essays provide a clear and insightful overview of the origins and impact of a medieval document that has shaped the history of the world
The Hubble Deep Field South Flanking Fields
As part of the Hubble Deep Field South program, a set of shorter 2-orbit
observations were obtained of the area adjacent to the deep fields. The WFPC2
flanking fields cover a contiguous solid angle of 48 square arcminutes.
Parallel observations with the STIS and NICMOS instruments produce a patchwork
of additional fields with optical and near-infrared (1.6 micron) response.
Deeper parallel exposures with WFPC2 and NICMOS were obtained when STIS
observed the NICMOS deep field. These deeper fields are offset from the rest,
and an extended low surface brightness object is visible in the deeper WFPC2
flanking field. In this data paper, which serves as an archival record of the
project, we discuss the observations and data reduction, and present SExtractor
source catalogs and number counts derived from the data. Number counts are
broadly consistent with previous surveys from both ground and space. Among
other things, these flanking field observations are useful for defining slit
masks for spectroscopic follow-up over a wider area around the deep fields, for
studying large-scale structure that extends beyond the deep fields, for future
supernova searches, and for number counts and morphological studies, but their
ultimate utility will be defined by the astronomical community.Comment: 46 pages, 15 figures. Images and full catalogs available via the

LSST Science Book, Version 2.0
A survey that can cover the sky in optical bands over wide fields to faint
magnitudes with a fast cadence will enable many of the exciting science
opportunities of the next decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST)
will have an effective aperture of 6.7 meters and an imaging camera with field
of view of 9.6 deg^2, and will be devoted to a ten-year imaging survey over
20,000 deg^2 south of +15 deg. Each pointing will be imaged 2000 times with
fifteen second exposures in six broad bands from 0.35 to 1.1 microns, to a
total point-source depth of r~27.5. The LSST Science Book describes the basic
parameters of the LSST hardware, software, and observing plans. The book
discusses educational and outreach opportunities, then goes on to describe a
broad range of science that LSST will revolutionize: mapping the inner and
outer Solar System, stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies,
the structure of the Milky Way disk and halo and other objects in the Local
Volume, transient and variable objects both at low and high redshift, and the
properties of normal and active galaxies at low and high redshift. It then
turns to far-field cosmological topics, exploring properties of supernovae to
z~1, strong and weak lensing, the large-scale distribution of galaxies and
baryon oscillations, and how these different probes may be combined to

Nuclear Calcium Signaling Controls Expression of a Large Gene Pool: Identification of a Gene Program for Acquired Neuroprotection Induced by Synaptic Activity
Synaptic activity can boost neuroprotection through a mechanism that requires synapse-to-nucleus communication and calcium signals in the cell nucleus. Here we show that in hippocampal neurons nuclear calcium is one of the most potent signals in neuronal gene expression. The induction or repression of 185 neuronal activity-regulated genes is dependent upon nuclear calcium signaling. The nuclear calcium-regulated gene pool contains a genomic program that mediates synaptic activity-induced, acquired neuroprotection. The core set of neuroprotective genes consists of 9 principal components, termed Activity-regulated Inhibitor of Death (AID) genes, and includes Atf3, Btg2, GADD45β, GADD45γ, Inhibin β-A, Interferon activated gene 202B, Npas4, Nr4a1, and Serpinb2, which strongly promote survival of cultured hippocampal neurons. Several AID genes provide neuroprotection through a common process that renders mitochondria more resistant to cellular stress and toxic insults. Stereotaxic delivery of AID gene-expressing recombinant adeno-associated viruses to the hippocampus confers protection in vivo against seizure-induced brain damage. Thus, treatments that enhance nuclear calcium signaling or supplement AID genes represent novel therapies to combat neurodegenerative conditions and neuronal cell loss caused by synaptic dysfunction, which may be accompanied by a deregulation of calcium signal initiation and/or propagation to the cell nucleus
