Diffuse interstellar bands in fullerene planetary nebulae: the fullerenes - diffuse interstellar bands connection
We present high-resolution (R~15000) VLT/UVES optical spectra of two
planetary nebulae (PNe; Tc 1 and M 1-20) where C60 (and C70) fullerenes have
already been found. These spectra are of high-quality (S/N > 300) for PN Tc 1,
which permits us to search for the expected electronic transitions of neutral
C60 and diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). Surprisingly, we report the
non-detection of the most intense optical bands of C60 in Tc 1, although this
could be explained by the low C60 column density estimated from the C60
infrared bands if the C60 emission peaks far away from the central star. The
strongest and most common DIBs in both fullerene PNe are normal for their
reddening. Interestingly, the very broad 4428 A DIB and the weaker 6309 A DIB
are found to be unusually intense in Tc 1. We also report the detection of a
new broad (FWHM~5 A) unidentified band at ~6525 A. We propose that the 4428 A
DIB (probably also the 6309 A DIB and the new 6525 A band) may be related to
the presence of larger fullerenes (e.g., C80, C240, C320, and C540) and
buckyonions (multishell fullerenes such as C60@C240 and C60@C240@C540) in the

Is there a Risk-Return Trade-off across Occupations? Evidence from Spain
We use data from Spain to test for an effect of earnings risk and skewness on individual wages. We carry out separate estimation for men, women, public and private sector employees. In accordance with previous evidence for the US we show the existence of a risk-return trade-off across occupations in the Spanish labour market. A search for diffuse bands in fullerene planetary nebulae: evidence of diffuse circumstellar bands
Large fullerenes and fullerene-based molecules have been proposed as carriers
of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). The recent detection of the most common
fullerenes (C60 and C70) around some planetary nebulae (PNe) now enable us to
study the DIBs towards fullerene-rich space environments. We search DIBs in the
optical spectra towards three fullerene-containing PNe (Tc 1, M 1-20, and IC
418). Special attention is given to DIBs which are found to be unusually
intense towards these fullerene sources. In particular, an unusually strong
4428A absorption feature is a common charateristic of fullerene PNe. Similar to
Tc 1, the strongest optical bands of neutral C60 are not detected towards IC
418. Our high-quality (S/N > 300) spectra for PN Tc 1, together with its large
radial velocity, permit us to search for the presence of diffuse bands of
circumstellar origin, which we refer to as diffuse circumstellar bands (DCBs).
We report the first tentative detection of two DCBs at 4428 and 5780 A in the
fullerene-rich circumstellar environment around the PN Tc 1. Laboratory and
theoretical studies of fullerenes in their multifarious manifestations (carbon
onions, fullerene clusters, or even complex species formed by fullerenes and
other molecules like PAHs or metals) may help solve the mystery of some of the

Freight Demand Model for Southern California Freeways with Owner–Operator Truck Drivers
This study evaluates the demand for truck-only toll lanes on Southern California freeways with owner–operator truck drivers. The study implemented the stated preference survey method to estimate the value placed by drivers on time, reliability, and safety measures using various scenarios geared towards assessing those values. The project team met face-to-face with owner- operator truck drivers near the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to understand the drivers’ perspectives regarding truck-only toll lanes on Southern California freeways. A data set containing 31 survey responses is obtained and used for statistical data analysis using analysis of variable (ANOVA) and two sample t-tests. The analysis results showed that 75.27% of the owner– operator truck drivers responded are willing to pay toll fees when they choose routes. The tolerated average toll fees are 12.82/hr for weekdays and weekends, respectively. The analysis results also showed that owner–operator truck drivers will take truck-only toll lanes when they take the routes used in four comparisons out of six comparisons according to the three measures such as values of time, reliability, and safety, despite sharing a common origin and destination. The highest toll fee per mile on any day that drivers are willing to pay when the main factor being compared is value of time is 18.35/hr. The toll fees associated with reliability and safety measures are 8.94/hr and 11.01/hr, respectively. These results are meaningful for legislators and transportation agencies as the behaviors and route choice characteristics of owner–operator truck drivers help them better understand the utility and demand for truck-only toll lanes
Coasting cosmologies with time dependent cosmological constant
The effect of a time dependent cosmological constant is considered in a
family of scalar tensor theories. Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological
models for vacumm and perfect fluid matter are found. They have a linear
expansion factor, the so called coasting cosmology, the gravitational
"constant" decreace inversely with time; this model satisfy the Dirac
hipotesis. The cosmological "constant" decreace inversely with the square of

Role of geographical provenance in the response of silver fir seedlings to experimental warming and drought
Changes in climate can alter the distribution and population dynamics of tree species by altering their recruitment patterns, especially at range edges. However, geographical patterns of genetic diversity could buffer the negative consequences of changing climate at rear range edges where populations might also harbour individuals with drought-adapted genotypes. Silver fir (Abies alba) reaches its south-western distribution limit in the Spanish Pyrenees, where recent climatic dieback events have disproportionately affected westernmost populations. We hypothesised that silver fir populations from the eastern Pyrenees are less vulnerable to the expected changing climate due to the inclusion of drought-resistant genotypes. We performed an experiment under strictly-controlled conditions simulating projected warming and drought compared with current conditions and analysed physiology, growth and survival of silver fir seedlings collected from eastern and western Pyrenean populations. Genetic analyses separated eastern and western provenances in two different lineages. Climate treatments affected seedling morphology and survival of both lineages in an overall similar way: elevated drought diminished survival and induced a higher biomass allocation to roots. Increased temperature and drought provoked more negative stem water potentials and increased δ13C ratios in leaves. Warming reduced nitrogen concentration and increased soluble sugar content in leaves, whereas drought increased nitrogen concentration. Lineage affected these physiological parameters, with western seedlings being more sensitive to warming and drought increase in terms of δ13C, nitrogen and content of soluble sugars. Our results demonstrate that, in Abies alba, differences in the physiological response of this species to drought are also associated with differences in biogeographical history
