Monte Carlo Simulations of Ultrathin Magnetic Dots
In this work we study the thermodynamic properties of ultrathin ferromagnetic
dots using Monte Carlo simulations. We investigate the vortex density as a
function of the temperature and the vortex structure in monolayer dots with
perpendicular anisotropy and long-range dipole interaction. The interplay
between these two terms in the hamiltonian leads to an interesting behavior of
the thermodynamic quantities as well as the vortex density.Comment: 10 figure
Frustrated multiband superconductivity
We show that a clean multiband superconductor may display one or several
phase transitions with increasing temperature from or to frustrated
configurations of the relative phases of the superconducting order parameters.
These transitions may occur when more than two bands are involved in the
formation of the superconducting phase and when the number of repulsive
interband interactions is odd. These transitions are signalled by slope changes
in the temperature dependence of the superconducting gaps.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Half Quantization
A general dynamical system composed by two coupled sectors is considered. The
initial time configuration of one of these sectors is described by a set of
classical data while the other is described by standard quantum data. These
dynamical systems will be named half quantum. The aim of this paper is to
derive the dynamical evolution of a general half quantum system from its full
quantum formulation. The standard approach would be to use quantum mechanics to
make predictions for the time evolution of the half quantum initial data. The
main problem is how can quantum mechanics be applied to a dynamical system
whose initial time configuration is not described by a set of fully quantum
data. A solution to this problem is presented and used, as a guideline to
obtain a general formulation of coupled classical-quantum dynamics. Finally, a
quantization prescription mapping a given classical theory to the correspondent
half quantum one is presented.Comment: 20 pages, LaTex file, Substantially revised versio
The relationship between the effective tax rate and the nominal rate
The main goal of this investigation is to understand the relationship between the nominal rate and
the effective tax rate and to evaluate if the differences between them depend on the value of the nominal
rate. Based on a sample of 1,530 companies from 5 countries members of the European Union (Denmark,
Slovenia, Finland, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom) there’s evidence that the effective tax rate is
positively related to the nominal rate. The effective tax rate was calculated through the ratio between the
value of the tax paid over the result before tax. When the nominal tax rate increases, the effective rate
increases equally but with a slower growth. This relationship is softened if we take into account the value
of the nominal tax rate, which shows that companies have the ability to manage the results in order to
increase savings in tax.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Exploring new ways of integration, visualization and interaction with Geotechnical and Geophysical Data
The work presented in this paper aims at exploring new ways of integrating, visualizing and interacting with geotechnical and geophysical data that may be more rich and interactive than those offered by most current Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Some visualization techniques enabling simultaneous visualization of the several data types available in our case study are proposed. Moreover, methods were developed to guide experts while defining layers and other relevant geological structures. The work is still in an early stage and is main goal has been assessing the validity and adequacy of the proposed techniques to the specific geotechnical and geophysical data under consideration.Universidade de Aveiro e Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branc

The early exercise boundary under the jump to default extended CEV model
This paper proves the existence, uniqueness, monotonicity and continuity of the early exercise boundary attached to American-style standard options under the jump to default extended constant elasticity of variance model of Carr and Linetsky (Financ Stoch 10(3):303–330, 2006).info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
