Monte Carlo Simulations of Ultrathin Magnetic Dots

In this work we study the thermodynamic properties of ultrathin ferromagnetic dots using Monte Carlo simulations. We investigate the vortex density as a function of the temperature and the vortex structure in monolayer dots with perpendicular anisotropy and long-range dipole interaction. The interplay between these two terms in the hamiltonian leads to an interesting behavior of the thermodynamic quantities as well as the vortex density.Comment: 10 figure

Performance of segmental and shotcrete linings in shallow tunnels crossing a transverse strike-slip faulting

In this paper, three-dimensional numerical modeling is performed to study the effects of strike-slip fault movement on the performance of shotcrete and segmental linings in shallow tunnels that transversely cross the fault. For this purpose, a parametric study is conducted on lining thickness, soil geo-mechanical properties, tunnel depth, and fault dip angle to assess their influence on the tunnel movements and deformation. A comparison between the segmental and the shotcrete tunnels is made to highlight their performance. The results show that the greater strike-slip fault dip angle increases the separation of the lining segments. As well, after faulting, the maximum tunnel displacement in denser soils is greater than in loose soils

The purpose of this study are to describe and explain: 1) to determine how the use of the types of speech acts in the language of the ads found in the newspaper The Jakarta Post Online, 2) to determine how the process or how the formation of the language of advertising in letter The Jakarta Post online news as linguistic teaching materials. Research Design in this research was descriptive qualitative, which means providing indepth explanation of the phenomenon or object in a systematic way, based on the facts and accuracy (Moleong,2006:5). The authors applied this research method inorder to determine how to use the types of speech acts (speech act) in the language of the ads found in the newspaper The Jakarta Post Online, and how the formation of the language of advertising in the newspaper The Jakarta PostOnline. The Jakarta Post Online as the subject of this study .Object of this research was thatthere were ads on the newspaper The Jakarta Post Online".The following discussion of the study as a pre-supposition that the authors used the adsthey generally use two clauses (contained in 10 ads), and only one ads which used three clauses, namely ad restaurant Seafood House. Locutionary acts /illocutionary meaning, in outline form, the advertising writer intended to give statements about the advertised product, foe readers, illocutionary acts / illocutionary meaning, each of these ads had already targeted and specific targetedfor its prospective users. Perlocutionary acts / perlocution meaning has meaning as if the two-wayscommunication between the advertised product with potential buyers. Implicate happened is all theads implied that the advertised product is not a regular product, but they are the selected product andthe best.Suggestions related to the results of research are as follows: pragmatics is a science that isvery beneficial to the world of advertising for a product that was introduced in the community must beaccompanied by the sentence / speech / word which is able to make the prospective buyer / userinterested and decided to purchase / use these products, Science pragmatic needs to be introduced andtaught in the course is primarily for students of English Education in order to understand thecontext of what happened around them. Furthermore, the research and in-depth associated withadvertising and pragmatic needs to be held to answer curiosity more about The scientific treasures

Magnetic friction due to vortex fluctuation

We use Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulation to study a magnetic tip-sample interaction. Our interest is to understand the mechanism of heat dissipation when the forces involved in the system are magnetic in essence. We consider a magnetic crystalline substrate composed of several layers interacting magnetically with a tip. The set is put thermally in equilibrium at temperature T by using a numerical Monte Carlo technique. By using that configuration we study its dynamical evolution by integrating numerically the equations of motion. Our results suggests that the heat dissipation in this system is closed related to the appearing of vortices in the sample.Comment: 6 pages, 41 figure

Radiocarbon and blue optically stimulated luminescence chronologies of the Oitavos consolidated dune (Western Portugal)

The dune of Oitavos, the underlying paleosol, and Helix sp. gastropod shells found within the paleosol were dated using a combination of radiocarbon and blue optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). The organic component of the paleosol produced a significantly older age (~20,000 cal BP) than the OSL age measurement (~15,000 yr), while 14C age measurements on the inorganic component and the gastropods produced ages of ~35,000 yr and ~34,000 yr, respectively. Rare-earth element analyses provide evidence that the gastropods incorporate geological carbonate, making them an unreliable indicator of the age of the paleosol. We propose that the 14C age of the small organic component of the paleosol is also likely to be unreliable due to incorporation of residual material. The OSL age measurement of the upper paleosol (~15,000 yr) is consistent with the age for the base of the dune (~14,500 yr). The younger OSL age for the top of the dune (~12,000 yr) suggests that it was built up by at least 2 sand pulses or that there was a remobilization of material at the top during its evolution, prior to consolidation

Correlation between sludge settleability and image analysis information using Partial Least Squares

In the last years there has been an increase on the research of the activated sludge processes, and mainly on the solid–liquid separation stage, considered of critical importance, due to the different problems that may arise affecting the compaction and the settling of the sludge. Furthermore, image analysis procedures are, nowadays considered to be an adequate method to characterize both aggregated and filamentous bacteria, and increasingly used to monitor bulking events in pilot plants. As a result of that, in this work, image analysis routines were developed in Matlab environment, allowing the identification and characterization of microbial aggregates and protruding filaments. Moreover, the large amount of activated sludge data collected with the image analysis implementation can be subsequently treated by multivariate statistical procedures such as PLS. In the current work the implementation of image analysis and PLS techniques has shown to provide important information for better understanding the behavior of activated sludge processes, and to predict, at some extent, the sludge volume index. As a matter of fact, the obtained results allowed explaining the strong relationships between the sludge settling properties and the free filamentous bacteria contents, aggregates size and aggregates morphology, establishing relevant relationships between macroscopic and microscopic properties of the biological system.
