    Board Attributes and Financial Performance of Listed Firms in Uganda

    This study examines the relationship between Board of director attributes and financial performance of listed firms in Uganda. Board attributes of board size, Non-executive directors (board independence) and directors’ shareholding are examined while controlling for firm size and leverage. The study uses a cross sectional research design, employing panel data of listed firms in Uganda for a period of four years. Financial and board attributes information is collected from annual reports of each firm. The study finds that non executive director’s independence on board and large boards increase firm performance. We do not provide evidence to suggest that director’s shareholding affects firm performance differently. Thus this study is consistent with evidence that shows the importance of board of directors’ attributes on firm®s financial performance.     A survey of X-ray emission from 100 kpc radio jets

    We have completed a Chandra snapshot survey of 54 radio jets that are extended on arcsec scales. These are associated with flat spectrum radio quasars spanning a redshift range z=0.3 to 2.1. X-ray emission is detected from the jet of approximately 60% of the sample objects. We assume minimum energy and apply conditions consistent with the original Felten-Morrison calculations in order to estimate the Lorentz factors and the apparent Doppler factors. This allows estimates of the enthalpy fluxes, which turn out to be comparable to the radiative luminosities.Comment: Conference Proceedings IAU Symposium No. 313, Extragalactic jets from every angle, pp. 219-224, 4 figure

    Knowledge and Health Care Seeking Behaviours on Cancer of the Cervix among Rural Women- A Case Study of Isingiro District

    Cervical cancer is an abnormal growth of cells in the cervical region of the uterus.  Cancer of the cervix occurs when the cells of the cervix change in a way that leads to unregulated growth and invasion of other tissues or organs of the body. Cancer of the cervix is the most common cancer affecting women in Africa and in the developing countries, second only to breast cancer worldwide(Franco et al 2003). Very few studies on knowledge and health care seeking behaviors have been carried out among women living in rural areas in Africa. Cervical cancer has threatened the lives of women in Uganda leading to other associated long-term problems in families. Keywords: Cancer of the Cervix,Knowledge,Health care seeking behaviours. Aim This study was intended to assess the knowledge of cervical cancer and the related health care seeking practices among the rural women in Isingiro district, south-western Uganda.   Methods It was a community based cross sectional study, involving women of 18 years and above.  The study participants werefirst given an explanation of the study and thereafter, a questionnaire was administered for data collection. The sample size estimated using the formula: N= Z2p (1-p)/ e2. Results According to the study, the knowledge, prevalence of symptoms and predisposing factors to cervical cancer was at 4.62 %( 18/385) and 0.00 %( 0/385) respectively. The study also revealed that; 98.35% (374/385) would accept CaCx screening, 0.33 %( 01/385) had utilized cervical cancer screening facilities and that 97.02 %( 374/385) did not screen due to lack of knowledge on CaCx. There is need to conduct a community based study to know the practices of health workers and assess if they are educating and offering suggestions for screening for cancer of the cervix. The research therefore recommends intervention the relevant stakeholders in the health care system to demystify facts on this disease among rural women, especially in Isingiro district.

    Causes and Timing of Mortality and Morbidity Among Late Presenters Starting Antiretroviral Therapy in the REALITY Trial.

    BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, 20%-25% of people starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) have severe immunosuppression; approximately 10% die within 3 months. In the Reduction of EArly mortaLITY (REALITY) randomized trial, a broad enhanced anti-infection prophylaxis bundle reduced mortality vs cotrimoxazole. We investigate the contribution and timing of different causes of mortality/morbidity. METHODS: Participants started ART with a CD4 count .3); and reduced nonfatal/fatal tuberculosis and cryptococcosis (P .2). CONCLUSIONS: Enhanced prophylaxis reduced mortality from cryptococcosis and unknown causes and nonfatal tuberculosis and cryptococcosis. High early incidence of fatal/nonfatal events highlights the need for starting enhanced-prophylaxis with ART in advanced disease. CLINICAL TRIALS REGISTRATION: ISRCTN43622374

    As the number of studies related to the early identification of and intervention in the schizophrenia prodrome continues to grow, it becomes increasingly critical to develop methods to diagnose this new clinical entity with validity. Furthermore, given the low incidence of patients and the need for multisite collaboration, diagnostic and symptom severity reliability is also crucial. This article provides further data on these psychometric parameters for the prodromal assessment instruments developed by the Prevention through Risk Identification, Management, and Education (PRIME) prodromal research team at Yale University: the Structured Interview for Prodromal Syndromes and the Scale of Prodromal Symptoms. It also presents data suggesting that excellent interrater reliability can be established for diagnosis in a day-and-a-half-long training workshop

    An X-Ray Imaging Survey of Quasar Jets: The Complete Survey

    We present Chandra X-ray imaging of a flux-limited sample of flat spectrum radio-emitting quasars with jet-like structure. X-rays are detected from 59% of 56 jets. No counter-jets were detected. The core spectra are fitted by power-law spectra with a photon index Γx, whose distribution is consistent with a normal distribution, with a mean of 1.61+0.04 -0.05 and dispersion of 0.15+0.04 -0.03. We show that the distribution of α rx, the spectral index between the X-ray and radio band jet fluxes, fits a Gaussian with a mean of 0.974 ±0.012 and dispersion of 0.077 ±0.008. We test the model in which kiloparsec-scale X-rays result from inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons off the jet's relativistic electrons (the IC-CMB model). In the IC-CMB model, a quantity Q computed from observed fluxes and the apparent size of the emission region depends on redshift as (1 + z)3+α. We fit Q ∝ (1 + z)a, finding a = 0.88 ±0.90, and reject at 99.5% confidence the hypothesis that the average α rx depends on redshift in the manner expected in the IC-CMB model. This conclusion is mitigated by a lack of detailed knowledge of the emission region geometry, which requires deeper or higher resolution X-ray observations. Furthermore, if the IC-CMB model is valid for X-ray emission from kiloparsec-scale jets, then the jets must decelerate on average: bulk Lorentz factors should drop from about 15 to 2-3 between parsec and kiloparsec scales.     Deep Multiwaveband Observations of the Jets of 0208-512 and 1202-262

    We present deep {\it HST, Chandra, VLA} and {\it ATCA} images of the jets of PKS 0208--512 and PKS 1202--262, which were found in a {\it Chandra} survey of a flux-limited sample of flat-spectrum radio quasars with jets (see Marshall et al., 2005). We discuss in detail their X-ray morphologies and spectra. We find optical emission from one knot in the jet of PKS 1202--262 and two regions in the jet of PKS 0208--512. The X-ray emission of both jets is most consistent with external Comptonization of cosmic microwave background photons by particles within the jet, while the optical emission is most consistent with the synchrotron process. We model the emission from the jet in this context and discuss implications for jet emission models, including magnetic field and beaming parameters.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, ApJ in pres

    A retrospective analysis of the randomized controlled DART (Development of AntiRetroviral Therapy in Africa; ISRCTN13968779) trial in HIV-1-positive adults initiating antiretroviral therapy with co-formulated zidovudine/lamivudine plus either tenofovir, abacavir, or nevirapine was conducted to evaluate the safety of initiating standard lamivudine dosing in patients with impaired creatinine clearance (CLcr). Safety data collected through 96 weeks were analyzed after stratification by baseline CLcr (estimated using Cockcroft-Gault) of 30-49 mL/min (n = 168) versus ≄50 mL/min (n = 3,132) and treatment regimen. The Grade 3-4 adverse events (AEs) and serious AEs (for hematological, hepatic and gastrointestinal events), maximal toxicities for liver enzymes, serum creatinine and bilirubin and maximum treatment-emergent hematology toxicities were comparable for groups with baseline CLcr 30-49 versus CLcr≄50 mL/min. No new risks or trends were identified from this dataset. Substantial and similar increases in the mean creatinine clearance (>25 mL/min) were observed from baseline though Week 96 among participants who entered the trial with CLcr 30-49 mL/min, while no increase or smaller median changes in creatinine clearance ( 150 cells/ mm3) in mean CD4+ cells counts from baseline to Week 96 were also observed for participants who entered the trial with CLcr 30-49 mL/min and those with baseline CLcr ≄50 mL/min. Though these results are descriptive, they suggest that HIV-positive patients with CLcr of 30-49 mL/min would have similar AE risks in comparison to patients with CLcr ≄50 mL/min when initiating antiretroviral therapy delivering doses of 300 mg of lamivudine daily through 96 weeks of treatment. Overall improvements in CLcr were observed for patients with baseline CLcr 30-49 mL/min
