Perinatal factors associate with vertebral size and shape but not lumbar lordosis in 10-year-old children

Rare inland reindeer lichens at Mima Mounds in southwest Washington State
Isolated populations of four reindeer lichen species and varieties co-occur in a unique relict prairie habitat at Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve, southwest Washington State, USA. The prairie is the type locality for mima mounds, unusual geologic features providing topographical variation that influences vegetation patterns. Reindeer lichens (Cladonia subgenus Cladina) are very rare in inland valley habitats of the western states outside of Alaska; one study species, C. ciliata, is apparently rare in North America and is not known south of the site. The current study establishes distributional, ecological, chemotypic, and phylogenetic analyses for the study species. We found that topography was not as important as recent fire history in explaining reindeer lichen distribution; in the future, prescribed fire is likely to benefit reindeer lichens so long as it preserves pockets of refugia as propagule sources. We also detected moderate air pollution stress, which is projected to have impacts on lichen abundances and community compositions in the near future. Chemotype analysis revealed 6 reindeer lichen chemotypes, of which 2 are rare (C. ciliata var. tenuis and C. portentosa subsp. pacifica f. decolorans). Phylogenetic analyses supported previous species concepts, showing C. portentosa is distinct from the closely-related group that includes C. rangiferina and two varieties of C. ciliata. We suggested that the four target taxa described herein may benefit from continued future monitoring and cataloging as state sensitive species
Phylogenetic evidence for an expanded circumscription of Gabura (Arctomiaceae)
Since the advent of molecular taxonomy, numerous lichen-forming fungi with homoiomerous thalli initially classified in the family Collemataceae Zenker have been transferred to other families, highlighting the extent of morphological convergence within Lecanoromycetes O. E. Erikss. & Winka. While the higher level classification of these fungi might be clarified by such transfers, numerous specific and generic classifications remain to be addressed. We examined the relationships within the broadly circumscribed genus Arctomia Th. Fr., which has been the recipient of several transfers from Collemataceae. We demonstrated that Arctomia insignis (P. M. Jørg. & Tønsberg) Ertz does not belong to Arctomia s. str. but forms a strong monophyletic group with Gabura fascicularis (L.) P. M. Jørg. We also confirmed that Arctomia borbonica Magain & Sérus. and the closely related Arctomia insignis represent two species. We formally transferred A. insignis and A. borbonica to the genus Gabura Adans. and introduced two new combinations: Gabura insignis and Gabura borbonica. We reported Gabura insignis from Europe (Scotland and Ireland) for the first time. While material from Europe and North America is genetically almost identical, specimens from Madagascar, South Africa and Reunion Island belong to three distinct phylogenetic lineages, all of which are present in the latter area and may represent distinct species. In its current circumscription, the genus Gabura may contain up to six species, whereas Arctomia s. str. includes only two species (A. delicatula Th. Fr. and A. teretiuscula P. M. Jørg.). The Gabura insignis group is shown to have an unexpectedly large, subcosmopolitan distribution. With the extended sampling from Arctomiaceae Th. Fr., the placement of Steinera sorediata P. James & Henssen in the genus Steinera Zahlbr. is confirmed and the presence of a new Steinera species from Chile is highlighted
Biodiversity and Ecology of Lichens of Katmai and Lake Clark National Parks and Preserves, Alaska
We inventoried lichens in Lake Clark (LACL) and Katmai (KATM) National Parks and Preserves. We assembled the known information on lichens in these parks by combining field, herbarium, and literature studies. Our results provide baseline data on lichen occurrence that may be used in resource condition assessments, vulnerability assessments, long-term ecological monitoring, and resource management. We report a total of 891 taxa of lichenized fungi from the Parks, adding 884 taxa to the total of 7 taxa reported for the Parks by the National Park Service database and including 12 new taxa. An additional 16 lichenicolous fungi are reported here. Seven non-lichenized fungi associated with young living twigs of particular host species are also included. Fourteen species are new to Alaska, and 5 species new to North America (Caloplaca fuscorufa, Lecanora leucococca s.l., Ochrolechia brodoi, Protoparmelia memnonia, and Rhizocarpon leptolepis). Three new combinations are made, Cetraria minuscula, Protomicarea alpestris, and Rostania occultata var. populina. Additional new species based on collections from the Parks have been described in separate publications
Observational study of long-term persistent elevation of neurodegeneration markers after cardiac surgery.
Surgery and anesthesia induce inflammatory changes in the central nervous system, which ultimately lead to neuronal damage concomitant with an increase in the level of neurodegeneration markers. Despite some experimental data showing prolonged activation of the immune system post-surgery, no study has determined the extent of long-term elevation of neurodegeneration markers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the serum levels of tau protein, ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1), neurofilament light (NF-L), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) after elective cardiac surgery with the implementation of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Evaluation of Pump Discontinuation and Associated Factors in the T1D Exchange Clinic Registry.
BackgroundThe objectives of this study were to examine factors associated with insulin pump discontinuation among children and adults followed longitudinally for 1 year in the multicenter T1D Exchange clinic registry, and to provide participant-reported reasons for stopping pump therapy.MethodsWe longitudinally followed 8935 participants of all ages using an insulin pump at the time of registry enrollment. Logistic regressions were used to identify demographic and clinical factors associated with pump discontinuation. Pump discontinuation was self-reported by participants on a first annual follow-up survey.ResultsThe overall frequency of pump discontinuation was 3%. Discontinuation was higher in adolescents (4%) and young adults (4%) than in younger children (3%) or older adults (1%). In multivariate analysis of children between 6 and <13 and 13 and <18 years, participants who discontinued pump use were more likely to have higher HbA1c levels at baseline (adjusted P < .001 for both). The top participant-reported reasons for discontinuing the pump included problems with wearability (57%), disliking the pump or feeling anxious (44%), and problems with glycemic control (30%).ConclusionsIn T1D Exchange registry participants, insulin pump discontinuation is uncommon, but more prevalent among adolescents and young adults, and youth with poor glycemic control. Given the known benefits of pump therapy, these populations should be targeted for support and education on troubleshooting pump use. Common reasons for discontinuation should also be considered in future device design and technological improvement
