A Guide for the Everyday Woman Surfer: How Surf Culture\u27s Patriarchy Marginalizes Ocean Lovers

    Get PDF
Humans are naturally drawn to the water by wind and tide. It is a place of solace that we have a desire to know deeply, yet we have kept one another from experiencing it through biases that perpetuate inequality. White-supremacist hegemony has historically kept communities of color from coastlines, women from lineups, and queer communities from participating in surf culture. As more people from all social groups return to the water through surfing in the 20th century, surf culture needs to adapt to become more inclusive. This paper outlines surf culture\u27s historical transition into whiteness and how female beauty standards as well as LGBTQ+ communities are affected by white racial dominance and how surf culture is transitioning to become more inclusive

Spontaneous Conversion from Virtual to Real Photons in the Ultrastrong Coupling Regime

We show that a spontaneous release of virtual photon pairs can occur in a quantum optical system in the ultrastrong coupling regime. In this regime, which is attracting interest both in semiconductor and superconducting systems, the light-matter coupling rate {\Omega}R becomes comparable to the bare resonance frequency of photons {\omega}0. In contrast to the dynamical Casimir effect and other pair creation mechanisms, this phenomenon does not require external forces or time dependent parameters in the Hamiltonian.Comment: To appear on Phys. Quantum complementarity of microcavity polaritons

    Get PDF
We present an experiment that probes polariton quantum correlations by exploiting quantum complementarity. Specifically, we find that polaritons in two distinct idler-modes interfere if and only if they share the same signal-mode so that "which-way" information cannot be gathered. The experimental results prove the existence of polariton pair correlations that store the "which-way" information. This interpretation is confirmed by a theoretical analysis of the measured interference visibility in terms of quantum Langevin equations
