    Il pensiero inerente la tutela delle opere d’arte ha subito una notevole evo- luzione nel corso della storia ed oggi è diventato indispensabile affiancare la scienza della conservazione alle consuete metodologie di restauro. Le scienze applicate ai Beni Culturali coinvolgono studiosi provenienti da diversi campi di ricerca e la collaborazione diventa una prerogativa imprescindibile per il successo dell’intervento conservativo e, soprattutto, per la conoscenza approfondita dell’opera in tutti i suoi aspetti, dai materiali costitutivi alla tecnica di realizzazione. Nell’articolo illustreremo quanto detto soffermandoci tra l’altro sul restauro degli affre- schi di Michelangelo della Cappella Sistina. Questo è stato definito come il primo restauro moderno, proprio perché le analisi hanno accompagnato ogni intervento tecnico sugli affre- schi, i quali sono tornati allo splendore originario nel rispetto dei principi teorici del restauro. In questo e in altri casi la diagnostica è diventata quindi un importante ausilio per lo stu- dio dei Beni Culturali, anche se la scelta della tecnica analitica deve essere relazionata sempre alla domanda alla quale si cerca la risposta. Le scienze applicate permettono di approfondire la storia dell’opera, la tecnica dell’artista, caratterizzano i materiali, ricostruendone le antiche rotte commerciali; tutte queste informazioni permettono di raggiungere una conoscenza senza pari, indispensabile per la valorizzazione, la tutela e la conservazione dei Beni Culturali.he approach to the protection of artwork has considerably evolved through- out history; placing side by side the conservation science and the usual methods of restoration has today become unavoidable. Science Applied to Cultural Heritage involves scholars from different research fields making their collaboration of paramount importance for the success of the conservation process and, above all, for the in-depth knowledge of the artwork in all its aspects, from the constituent materials to the realization technique. This article will discuss this topic taking into particular account the restoration of Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. This was defined as the first modern restoration, because scientific tests have accompanied for the first time any technical intervention on the frescoes, which were returned to their original splendor in respect of the theoretical principles of restoration. In this specific case and in other ones, the diagnostics has therefore become an important aid in Cultural Heritage studies, provided that the choice of the analytical technique is always related to the answer that one is trying to pursue. Applied sciences provide an insight into the history of the artworks, the artists’ techniques, the knowledge of employed materials – that allow one to reconstruct the ancient trade routes; all this information can accomplish an unsurpassed knowledge, which is becoming essential for the development, protection and conservation of Cultural Heritage

    The impact of introducing tyrosine kinase inhibitors on chronic myeloid leukemia survival: a population-based study

    Background Chronic myeloid leukemia is associated with a BCR/ABL oncoprotein inhibited by imatinib mesylate, the first tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Although experimental studies have clearly demonstrated the efficacy of imatinib, up-to-date data on its effectiveness at the population level are limited. Our study aims to assess the change in disease-specific survival for chronic myeloid leukemia after introducing tyrosine kinase inhibitors in first-line treatment. Methods This study analyzed data from two population-based cancer registries in Italy. Disease-specific survival for chronic myeloid leukemia cases diagnosed before and after the introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (February 2002) were calculated up to 10 years. Hazard ratios were calculated using Cox regression models adjusted for sex, age at diagnosis and residency. An interrupted time series analysis was also performed. Results Between 1996 and 2012, 357 new cases of chronic myeloid leukemia were diagnosed (standardized incidence rate of 1.2 per 100,000 residents), quite constant throughout the period. The interrupted time series analysis showed a gain of 40.4% in 5 years of disease-specific survival for chronic myeloid leukemia (from 47.3, 95%CI 38.5\u201355.5% to 80.8%, 95%CI 74.5\u201385.8%) after the introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors. The hazard ratio was 0.36 (95%CI 0.25\u20130.52) for cases diagnosed after tyrosine kinase inhibitor introduction, with differences per age at diagnosis: 74yo 0.41 (95%CI 0.23\u20130.73). An improvement in survival (hazard ratio 0.66, 95%CI 0.36\u20131.20) was also observed in cases diagnosed before, and alive at, tyrosine kinase inhibitors introduction. Conclusions Tyrosine kinase inhibitors increased disease-specific survival both for new and prevalent chronic myeloid leukemia cases. The effectiveness was similar to that observed in trials only in patients ages 65 years or younger

    A new severity score index for phenotypic classification and evaluation of responses to treatment in type I Gaucher disease

    Gaucher disease is the first lysosomal storage disease for which specific therapy became available. Over 4800 patients have been treated with enzyme replacement therapy. Analysis of Gaucher disease registry data has outlined the clinical heterogeneity of the disease and the different responses to treatment from patient to patient, and for different organs. This variability in clinical response justifies the development of a severity score index to assess disease activity, stage and prognosis, and to quantify the effects of treatment.The \u201cGaucher Disease Severity Score Index Type I\u201d(GauSSI-I), is based on the clinical experience of the authors and an extensive literature review, including data from the International Gaucher Registry. In particular for skeletal disease, all the available scoring systems have been reviewed and compared in order to provide a skeletal scoring system that allows use of any of the different methods. Siix specific domains, in which different items were scored according to their impact on morbidity, were characterized. GauSSI-I was evaluated in 53 type I Gaucher patients treated with imiglucerase, and it was compared to the Zimran score, the only severity index score so far available. It is a reliable method for staging the severity of adult type I Gaucher disease, and it is more sensitive than the Zimran score for monitoring the response to treatment

    Indoor Localization System Based on Bluetooth Low Energy for Museum Applications

    In the last few years, indoor localization has attracted researchers and commercial developers. Indeed, the availability of systems, techniques and algorithms for localization allows the improvement of existing communication applications and services by adding position information. Some examples can be found in the managing of people and/or robots for internal logistics in very large warehouses (e.g., Amazon warehouses, etc.). In this paper, we study and develop a system allowing the accurate indoor localization of people visiting a museum or any other cultural institution. We assume visitors are equipped with a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) device (commonly found in modern smartphones or in a small chipset), periodically transmitting packets, which are received by geolocalized BLE receivers inside the museum area. Collected packets are provided to the locator server to estimate the positions of the visitors inside the museum. The position estimation is based on a feed-forward neural network trained by a measurement campaign in the considered environment and on a non-linear least square algorithm. We also provide a strategy for deploying the BLE receivers in a given area. The performance results obtained from measurements show an achievable position estimate accuracy below 1 m

    Investigating the cecal microbiota in broiler poultry farms and its potential relationships with animal welfare

    The present study assessed the modulation of cecal microbiota and correlations with Campylobacter colonization and animal welfare status. For these purposes, we conducted a cross sectional study of the cecal microbiota from 187 broilers reared in 13 batches from 10 poultry farms by performing 16S rRNA sequencing (regions V3–4). The welfare of each batch was assessed using a simplified Welfare Quality® protocol, scoring higher in organic batches, compared to both antibiotic-free and conventional batches. The bioinformatics analyses were conducted in QIIME 2 and a linear discriminant analysis determined the association between microbiota and animals with different Campylobacter carriage status and welfare levels. In the microbiota from the subjects negative for Campylobacter or with high welfare scores, Bacteroidetes was the predominant phylum with the genus Megamonas significantly increased in abundance. A greater abundance of Parabacteroides, Phascolarctobacterium, Helicobacter in poultry negative for Campylobacter was also found at the genus level. Animals with the lowest welfare scores showed an increased abundance of Proteobacteria.     BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine does not impact the honeymoon phase in type 1 diabetes: a case report

    Type 1 diabetes (T1D), which is caused by the autoimmune destruction of insulin-secreting pancreatic beta cells, represents a high-risk category requiring COVID-19 vaccine prioritization. Although COVID-19 vaccination can lead to transient hyperglycemia (vaccination-induced hyperglycemia; ViHG), its influence on the course of the clinical remission phase of T1D (a.k.a. "honeymoon phase") is currently unknown. Recently, there has been an increasing concern that COVID-19 vaccination may trigger autoimmune phenomena. We describe the case of a 24-year-old young Italian man with T1D who received two doses of the BNT162b2 mRNA (Pfizer-BioNTech) COVID-19 vaccine during a prolonged honeymoon phase. He experienced a transient impairment in glucose control (as evidenced by continuous glucose monitoring) that was not associated with substantial changes in stimulated C-peptide levels and islet autoantibody titers. Nonetheless, large prospective studies are needed to confirm the safety and the immunometabolic impact of the BNT162b2 vaccine in T1D patients during the honeymoon phase. Thus far, T1D patients who are going to receive COVID-19 vaccination should be warned about the possible occurrence of transient ViHG and should undergo strict postvaccination surveillance

    CT Perfusion as a Predictor of the Final Infarct Volume in Patients with Tandem Occlusion

    Background: CT perfusion (CTP) is used in patients with anterior circulation acute ischemic stroke (AIS) for predicting the final infarct volume (FIV). Tandem occlusion (TO), involving both intracranial large vessels and the ipsilateral cervical internal carotid artery could generate hemodynamic changes altering perfusion parameters. Our aim is to evaluate the accuracy of CTP in the prediction of the FIV in TOs. Methods: consecutive patients with AIS due to middle cerebral artery occlusion, referred to a tertiary stroke center between March 2019 and January 2021, with an automated CTP and successful recanalization (mTICI = 2b - 3) after endovascular treatment were retrospectively included in the tandem group (TG) or in the control group (CG). Patients with parenchymal hematoma type 2, according to ECASS II classification of hemorrhagic transformations, were excluded in a secondary analysis. Demographic, clinical, radiological, time intervals, safety, and outcome measures were collected. Results: among 319 patients analyzed, a comparison between the TG (N = 22) and CG (n = 37) revealed similar cerebral blood flow (CBF) > 30% (29.50 +/- 32.33 vs. 15.76 +/- 20.93 p = 0.18) and FIV (54.67 +/- 65.73 vs. 55.14 +/- 64.64 p = 0.875). Predicted ischemic core (PIC) and FIV correlated in both TG (tau = 0.761, p < 0.001) and CG (tau = 0.315, p = 0.029). The Bland-Altmann plot showed agreement between PIC and FIV for both groups, mainly in the secondary analysis.
