    Performance analysis of a common-rail Diesel engine fuelled with different blends of waste cooking oil and gasoil

    An experimental campaign was performed to study the behavior of a common-rail Diesel engine in automotive configuration when it is fuelled with blends of Diesel fuel (DF) and waste cooking oil (WCO). In particular the tested fuels are: B20 blend, composed of 20% WCO and 80% DF; B50, composed of 50% WCO and 50% DF; WCO 100% and 100% DF. In order to fuel the engine with fuel having a similar viscosity, this quantity, together with density, has been meas-ured at temperature ranging from rom to about 80 °C. According to these measurements, before fuelling the engine B20 was heated up to 35 °C and B50 to 75 °C. An in-house software was developed to acquire the data elaborated by the electronic control unit. Results show the trend in torque and global efficiency at different gas pedal position (gpp) and different engine speed. The experiments show that larger discrepancies are measured at smaller gpp values, while at larger ones dif-ferences become smaller. A similar trend is noticed for engine global efficiency

    Antiandrogen monotherapy: Recommendations for the treatment of prostate cancer

    Objective: The concept of antiandrogens as monotherapy for the treatment of prostate cancer is discussed. Methods: Both Medline and Current Contents were used to identify studies on antiandrogen monotherapy in prostate cancer. We tried to analyze this database critically to establish whether or not there is evidence for using this monotherapy. Results: In particular, bicalutamide in monotherapy has been compared with castration in large international trials. Results show that antiandrogen monotherapy is inferior to castration in patients with metastatic tumour but the difference in median survival is limited. In locally advanced M0 prostate cancer bicalutamide 150 mg monotherapy seems equivalent to castration in terms of overall survival and time to progression. Analysis of quality of life showed that there is evidence of some benefits from bicalutamide when compared to castration in both sexual interest and physical capacity. Conclusion: Antiandrogens in monotherapy can be effective and well tolerated. However, more research is needed because none of the available compounds have definitively been proven to be equivalent to castration

    A new test of resistance in the diagnosis of postero-superior rotator cuff tears.

    The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of a new clinical test for the diagnosis of subacromial impingement and full thickness postero-superior rotator cuff tears. One hundred and twenty patients who underwent arthroscopic treatment for acromioplasty or cuff repair were previously submitted to a new test of resistance. The test is performed in the standing position with the involved arm in 90 degrees abduction, 20 degrees -30 degrees anteposition and in external rotation (as for full-can test). Thus, the patient was invited to follow the way of a spiral drawn on a drawing sheet for 20 turns; 1 turn = from the centre to the end of the spiral and vice versa (spiral width = 20 cm). The test was considered positive when the patient was not able to conclude it due to strength decrease or to shoulder pain. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values as well as diagnostic accuracy were calculated for our test of resistance. The test resulted scarcely reliable as detector of subacromial impingement and not very reliable as detector of small tear. When the test is positive there is a high probability that a subacromial disease exists; instead, when it is negative there is a high probability that the patient has not a large or massive cuff tear. The resistance test (Gum-Turn test) adds to our armamentarium of physical examination signs in patients with painful shoulder and furnishes further information on possible dimensions of tendinous tear

    Stochastic comparisons of series and parallel systems with randomized independent components

    Consider a series or parallel system of independent components and assume that the components are randomly chosen from two different batches, with the components of the first batch being more reliable than those of the second. In this note it is shown that the reliability of the system increases, in usual stochastic order sense, as the random number of components chosen from the first batch increases in increasing convex order. As a consequence, we establish a result analogous to the Parrondo's paradox, which shows that randomness in the number of components extracted from the two batches improves the reliability of the series syste

    Nucleolus vs nucleus count for identifying spiral ganglion in human temporal bone

    OBJECTIVES: Spiral ganglion (SG) counting is used in experimental studies conducted on age-, noise-, and drug-induced sensorineural hearing loss, as well as in the assessment of cochlear implant performances. Different methods of counting have been reported, but no definite standardization of such procedure has been published. The aim of our study is to identify the best method to count human spiral ganglions (SGs). MATERIAL and METHODS: By identification of nuclei or nucleoli as described by Schucknect, seven researchers with different experience levels counted SGs in 123 human temporal bones (TBs). Data on time of post-mortem bone removal post-mortem, methods of specimen’s fixation, decalcification, and coloration were collected to test their possible influence on human tissue. Percentage, two-tailed t-test, Spearman’s test, and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Nucleoli were identified in 61% of cases, whereas nuclei were recognized in 100% of cases (p<0.005). Nucleoli presence in all four segments in the same temporal bone (TB) was observed in 69 cases (92%), whereas nuclei were identified in all four segments in 103 cases (83.7%) (p<0.001). The junior investigators requested a double check by the seniors in 25 (20.3%) cases for identifying and counting nucleoli, whereas the senior researchers showed no doubts in their identification and count. The only parameter positively affecting nucleoli identification in tissue preparation was bone removal for <12 h with respect to longer post-mortem time (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: We suggest counting nuclei, rather than nucleoli, for spiral ganglion computation because of easier recognition of nuclei, especially in case of investigator’s limited experience

    Several studies have assessed the effectiveness of individual marine protected areas (MPAs) in protecting fish assemblages, but regional assessments of multiple parks are scarce. Here fish surveys using visual census were done in marine parks and fished areas at 31 locations across the Mediterranean Sea. Fish species richness, diversity and biomass (especially of top predators) were higher in MPAs compared to fished areas, and community structure differed significantly between MPAs and fished areas. Results suggest that MPAs are generally effective means to protect and recover fish populations and assemblages

    Monumental trees and their existence value: Case study of an Italian natural park

    The paper deals with the evaluation of the existence value of monumental trees in a protected area. Financial resources to be destined for protection interventions have been decreasing more and more, with a high risk of losing this natural heritage. A Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) survey was carried out among the Madonie Park (Sicily, Italy) resident households to evaluate the existence value of monumental trees of the nature trail named "Piano Sempria-Piano Pomo", represented by a population of "Giant hollies" and by 7 other individual trees. These are the main results of the CVM survey: the overall response rate was 40%, individual average WTPs (Willingness To Pay) were £12.37 for the protection of the holly population and £13.45 for all the monumental trees along the nature trail. The median WTPs were £2.00 and £5.00, respectively. The aggregate WTP estimates for the Park residents range from a minimum of £10,520.40 to a maximum amount of £83,479.37 depending upon the investigated resource and the statistics considered

    GPGPU for track finding in High Energy Physics

    The LHC experiments are designed to detect large amount of physics events produced with a very high rate. Considering the future upgrades, the data acquisition rate will become even higher and new computing paradigms must be adopted for fast data-processing: General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) is a novel approach based on massive parallel computing. The intense computation power provided by Graphics Processing Units (GPU) is expected to reduce the computation time and to speed-up the low-latency applications used for fast decision taking. In particular, this approach could be hence used for high-level triggering in very complex environments, like the typical inner tracking systems of the multi-purpose experiments at LHC, where a large number of charged particle tracks will be produced with the luminosity upgrade.     The presence of the Red Sea Mantis shrimp Erugosquilla massavensis (Kossmann, 1880) is here reported for the first time from the southeastern Ionian Sea (Zakynthos Island, Greece). This record is the first evidence of the presence of a Lessepsian migrant crustacean in the aforementioned area while it fills the gap in the ongoing westward and northward distribution range expansion of this wide spread invader of the Mediterranean basin.U ovom radu se iznosi prvi nalaz crvenomorske kozice Erugosquilla massavensis (Kossmann, 1880.) na jugoistoku Jonskog mora (otok Zakynthos, Grčka).
