    Optimization of Stone Cutting Techniques for the Seismic Protection of Archaeological Sites

    Since the beginning of civilization, history tells of the movement of art pieces, monuments and manufacts from site to site. The causes are multiple: the displacements due to the "spoils of war", ordered by kings and emperors, the movements caused by the need for reuse, especially in the early Christian period, and so forth. Considerations about the events of the past, yield a possible strategy to transform this concept into a technique for earthquake prevention of archaeological sites. The seismic safety retrofits have often proven to be scarcely effective, because of the difficulties involved in complex sites. The aim of this study is to analyze an "alternative" method of preventing natural disaster like floods, eruption and earthquakes, through the movimentation of the most representative structural elements of archaeological sites by decomposition of the masonry and marbles [1]. The procedure considers a process of "cutting optimization," calibrated on the characteristics of the specific material that has to be cut and then displaced in safer places (i.e., MEP, "manufact evacuation plan"). This process should not create excessive problems to the structure, and aims to reassembly the manufact in contexts able to guarantee safety through advanced earthquake-resistant expedients. From these considerations, the work develops a procedure to safeguard the archaeological site of Pompei (Naples), through an appropriate analysis of representative portions of the site, aimed to a careful handling and to a proper reconstruction in a safe location, from the seismic point of vie

    Testicular endocrine activity is upregulated by D-Aspartic acid in the green frog Rana esculenta

    This study investigated the involvement of D-aspartic acid (D-Asp) in testicular steroidogenesis of the green frog Rana esculenta and its effect on stimulation of thumb pad morphology and glandular activity, a typical testosterone-dependent secondary sexual characteristic in this amphibian species. In the testis, D-Asp concentrations vary significantly during the reproductive cycle: they are low in pre- and post-reproductive periods, but reach peak levels in the reproductive period (140-236 nmol/g wet tissue). Moreover, the concentrations of D-Asp in the testis through the sexual cycle positively match the testosterone levels in the gonad and the plasma. The racemase activity evaluated during the cycle expresses its peak when D-Asp and testosterone levels are highest, that is, during the reproductive period, confirming the synthesis of D-Asp from L-Asp by an aspartate racemase. Short-term in vivo experiments consisting of a single injection of D-Asp (2.0 micro mol/g body weight) demonstrated that this amino acid accumulates significantly in the testis, and after 3 h its uptake is coupled with a testosterone increase in both testis and plasma. Moreover, within 18 h of amino acid administration, the D-Asp concentration in the testis decreased along with the testosterone titer to prestimulation levels. Other amino acids (L-Asp, D-Glu and L-Glu) used instead of D-Asp were ineffective, confirming that the significant increase in testicular testosterone was a specific feature of this amino acid. In long-term experiments, D-Asp had been administered chronically to frogs caught during the three phases of the reproductive cycle, inducing testosterone increase and 17beta-estradiol decrease in the gonad during the pre- and post-reproductive period, and vice versa during the reproductive period

    Comparison of the TaqMan and LightCycler systems in pharmacogenetic testing: evaluation of the CYP2C9*2/*3 polymorphisms.

    Background: Pharmacogenetic testing for drugmetabolizing enzymes is not yet widely used in clinical practice. Methods: In an attempt to facilitate the application of this procedure, we have compared two real-time PCRbased methods, the TaqMan_ and the LightCycler_ for the pharmacogenetic evaluation of CYP2C9*2/*3 polymorphisms. Results and Conclusion: Both procedures are suitable for pharmacogenetic studies. The TaqMan procedure was less expensive in terms of cost per sample, but the TaqMan apparatus is more expensive than the LightCycler apparatus

    An exploratory study of the hard X-ray variability properties of PG quasars with RXTE

    We have monitored with the RXTE PCA the variability pattern of the 2-20 keV flux in four PG quasars (QSOs) from the Laor et al. (1994) sample. Six observations of each target at regular intervals of 1 day were performed. The sample comprises objects with extreme values of Balmer line width (and hence soft X-ray steepness) and spans about one order of magnitude in luminosity. The most robust result is that the variability amplitude decreases as energy increases.     Proposal of a new simplified coulomb friction model applied to electrohydraulic servomechanisms

    The design of electro-hydraulic servomechanisms characterized by high precision requirements generally needs adequate knowledge of its characteristics, and, in particular, of nonlinear phenomena. Among these, Coulomb's frictional forces acting on the mechanical elements in relative motion are critical to guarantee an implementation capable of respecting the accuracy requirements. The correct evaluation of this phenomenon allows understanding the behaviour of the physical system considered, to estimate its performance by implementing it in a simulation environment, and to design new devices taking into account the relative constraints. Accurate modelling and simulation of the considered system generally imply the use of high order dynamic models (typically, of second-order nonlinear or higher). However, under certain conditions, it is possible (and advisable) to simplify the mathematical structure of the numerical model, degrading it to a simple first-order, reducing its complexity and computational cost and, nevertheless, still obtaining results comparable with higher-order models. In this paper, the authors propose a new computational model capable of being implemented within these degraded numerical models, allowing them to simulate the main effects due to dry frictions (Coulomb's model). This first-order dynamic model is compared with the corresponding second-order ones to evaluate their performances in different scenarios

    Gravitational effects on a rigid Casimir cavity

    Vacuum fluctuations produce a force acting on a rigid Casimir cavity in a weak gravitational field.     Prestress and experimental tests on fractional viscoelastic materials

    Creep and/or Relaxation tests on viscoelastic materials show a power-law trend. Based upon Boltzmann superposition principle the constitutive law with a power-law kernel is ruled by the Caputo's fractional derivative. Fractional constitutive law posses a long memory and then the parameters obtained by best fitting procedures on experimental data are strongly influenced by the prestress on the specimen. As in fact during the relaxation test the imposed history of deformation is not instantaneously applied, since a unit step function may not be realized by the test machine. Aim of this paper, it is shown that, the experimental procedure, and in particular the initial ramp to reach the constant stress (or strain) strongly influences the best fitting procedure and the coefficients of the power-law

    Isolation of gravitational waves from displacement noise and utility of a time-delay device

    Interferometers with kilometer-scale arms have been built for gravitational-wave detections on the ground; ones with much longer arms are being planned for space-based detection. One fundamental motivation for long baseline interferometry is from displacement noise. In general, the longer the arm length L, the larger the motion the gravitational-wave induces on the test masses, until L becomes comparable to the gravitational wavelength. Recently, schemes have been invented, in which displacement noises can be evaded by employing differences between the influence of test-mass motions and that of gravitational waves on light propagation. However, in these schemes, such differences only becomes significant when L approaches the gravitational wavelength, and shot-noise limited sensitivity becomes worse than that of conventional configurations by a factor of at least (f L/c)^(-2), for f<c/L. Such a factor, although can be overcome theoretically by employing high optical powers, makes these schemes quite impractical. In this paper, we explore the use of time delay in displacement-noise-free interferometers, which can improve their shot-noise-limited sensitivity at low frequencies, to a factor of (f L/c)^(-1) of the shot-noise-limited sensitivity of conventional configurations.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, a proceeding for the Spanish Relativity Meeting ERE 200
