    Understanding and supporting children and young people with eating disorders

    Eating disorders can have devastating effects on individuals and families. Maddie Burton explains the crucial role practice nurses can play in identifying and supporting patients Children and young people's mental health conditions have continued to increase. The NHS Digital 2017 survey found that 1 in 8 children have a diagnosable mental health condition. During the current COVID-19 pandemic numbers are set to increase. Eating disorders make up a relatively small proportion of these statistics but have some of the most devastating effects on individuals and families. Anorexia nervosa, as discussed here, has the highest morbidity of any mental health condition. The issues are complex and a challenge to understand for both professionals and families, over typically a protracted period of illness. However, all work with children, young people and their families presents a ‘window of opportunity’ in being able to resolve issues within a developmental phase prior to the more concrete adult phase. The risk is highest for young people between the ages of 13 and 17 years. There are several theoretical models that aid understanding of how and why eating disorders emerge and are maintained. Practice nurses in primary care can have a crucial role in early identification and can be found to be less stigmatising than mental health professionals. Practice nurses can have an ongoing role in remaining involved with the young person and their family and as part of the wider specialist support system

    Electroactive poly(vinylidene fluoride) based materials: recent progress, challenges and opportunities

    A poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers are polymers that, in specific crystalline phases, show high dielectric and piezoelectric values, excellent mechanical behavior and good thermal and chemical stability, suitable for many applications from the biomedical area to energy devices. This chapter introduces the main properties, processability and polymorphism of PVDF. Further, the recent advances in the applications based on those materials are presented and discussed.     Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in looked-after children: a systematic review of the literature

    Purpose of review:To systematically review the literature on the prevalence and pharmacological treatment of ADHD in looked-after children (LAC).Recent findings:LAC are a very challenging population from a clinical and psychosocial standpoint, with higher mental health needs compared to non LAC. To date, no systematic review on the prevalence of ADHD, and its treatment, in LAC is available.Summary:We searched Pubmed, PsycInfo EMBASE + EMBASE CLASSIC, OVID Medline and Web of Science up to November 9 th, 2016. We found 24 papers meeting our criteria. The vast majority of the retained studies are from the USA and show rates of ADHD and of its pharmacological treatment substantially higher in LAC than those reported in national estimates. Future studies from countries other than the USA, aiming to understand the most cost-effective strategies, in the short as well as long term, to manage symptoms of ADHD in LAC are needed.<br/

    Bipolar Junction Transistors in Two-Dimensional WSe<sub>2</sub> with Large Current and Photocurrent Gains

    In the development of semiconductor devices, the bipolar junction transistor (BJT) features prominently as being the first solid state transistor that helped to usher in the digital revolution. For any new semiconductor, therefore, the fabrication and characterization of the BJT are important for both technological importance and historical significance. Here, we demonstrate a BJT device in exfoliated TMD semiconductor WSe<sub>2</sub>. We use buried gates to electrostatically create doped regions with back-to-back p–n junctions. We demonstrate two central characteristics of a bipolar device: current gain when operated as a BJT and a photocurrent gain when operated as a phototransistor. We demonstrate a current gain of 1000 and photocurrent gain of 40 and describe features that enhance these properties due to the doping technique that we employ
