Bharthi and Vivekananda in Comparative Perspective

    Get PDF
A comparison is a way of expressing that one leadership trait is similar to and compatible with another leadership trait. Therefore, Bharathiyar and Vivekananda are united in their thoughts, actions, faith, patriotism, particularly Tamil patriotism, god worship, and so on. It is also admirable that all these qualities are inherent in both of them. Bharathiyar lived following Vivekananda. Both of them were multi-lingual, capable of making revolutions, had the power to finish what they intended, strived for the liberation of the country, and were energetic people like the sun. Vivekananda travelled all over the world; Bharathiyar lived in Tamil Nadu and puducherry. The life of an average person consists of many events, from birth to death. The events that happen in everyone's life do not become history, but the lives of these two great princes are history to be admired forever. This study compares and examines the impact of place, time, family life, and social influence on their lives

Evaluation of Hepatoprotective Activity of Certain Indian Medicinal Plants using In Vitro and In Vivo Methods

A number of hepatotoxins such as viruses, bacteria, chemicals, medicines and alcohol target the liver and cause liver injury. These antioxidants are rich in natural sources of drugs, especially plants. In this aspect, plants that were chosen for the study are the rhizomes of Alpinia speciosa and roots of Valeriana wallichii. In the indigenous system of medicine Alpinia speciosa is used as an ornamental plant. Valeriana wallichii roots have numerous medicinal uses. Based on the facts of the two plants, the current study was undertaken. The study investigated hepatoprotective activities of rhizomes of Alpinia speciosa and roots of Valeriana wallichii. Phytochemical screening of various plant extracts of both the plants was carried out. The chloroform extracts of both the plants had showed good activity among all the extracts. Acute toxicity studies were carried out and the animals were found to be safe In vivo hepatoprotective activity of chloroform extracts of both the plants at two different doses (lower dose and higher doses) was determined. CEAS and CEVW possessed significant (P<0.001) hepatoprotective activity. Further attempts were made to isolate and identify the possible active principles from the chloroform extracts of Alpinia speciosa and Valeriana wallichii. The presence of active constituents (flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids and phenolics) in these plants might be responsible for the hepatoprotective activity. Therefore, CEAS and CEVW proposed to protect the liver against the paracetamol, D-Galactosamine and ethanol induced oxidative damage. The in vivo hepatoprotective properties of these plants can consequently propose a liver protection to the population whoever consumes it and prevent liver injuries. The hepatoprotective activities of the plant extracts may be due to the presence of isolated compounds, Hesperidin and rutin from Alpinia speciosa and betulin from Valeriana wallichii and were identified by infra red spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonanace spectroscopy. These isolated compounds had acted as an antioxidant by scavenging the free radicals that had produced by the induction of hepatotoxins (paracetamol, D-Galactosamine and ethanol) and proved as an effective hepatoprotective agent. Thus the isolated compounds from the respective plants will be key leads for producing novel bioactive constituents and may possess more significance in the treatment of hepatic diseases

Tree Stands and Their Productivity Dynamics at the Upper Growing Limit in Khibiny on the Background of Modern Climate Changes

    Get PDF
Within the ecotone of the upper limit of woody vegetation on the southeastern macroslope of the Khibiny Mountain ridge (Kola Peninsula), the spatial and age structure, as well as features of the phytomass accumulation of spruce–birch stands, were studied. Analysis revealed that there was a manifold increase in the density and productivity of forest stands in the last century, and the upper border of the woodlands and dense forests has moved considerably higher into the mountains. All of this happened against the background of an increase in early summer temperatures and a longer growing season in the area in the 20th century. Our data will help simulate the response of mountain ecosystems in the region to future climate change. © 2019, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd

    Women in environmental protection

    Get PDF
Quality of life has become an important concern of all people. Environmental quality is considered as an important parameter in assessing the quality of life. Women share the environment as much as the men share. There are many areas where women are directly connected with the environmental quality. Women in India, spend a major part of their time in indoor conditions. Cooking in the kitchen, washing clothes, cleaning the house and its surroundings are the important duties which the women perform. Women are exposed to environmental pollution while performing these duties. This is the environment to which women are exposed in particular, however, the general environmental quality affects them equally. Women are victims of environmental pollution. Women, forming 50 per cent of the population can be a very important human resource to combat environmental pollution. Role of women in increasing the awareness of the requirement of environmental protection is important. Individual and mass movements of women organisations in India have paid rich dividends. Legal battles fought by women in India to protect the environment are worth noting. The present paper covers the role of women in environmental protection. Legal battles fought by women and achievements made by women organisations in India are also incorporated in the paper

Structure and Dynamics of Tree Stands at the Upper Timberline in the Western Part of the Putorana Plateau

Analysis of the age structure of Dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii Rupr.) forests in the western part of the Putorana Plateau (Sukhie Gory Range) and comparison of diachronous topographic maps and satellite images have revealed changes in the altitudinal position of the upper boundary of tree vegetation. the most significant changes occurred on south- and southwest-facing slopes. Correlations of trunk diameters with the phytomass of trees and its fractions have been found. the course of changes in the structure and phytomass of tree stands in the upper timberline over the past centuries has been reconstructed. Forest expansion has been facilitated by the general change in climate conditions (warming) in the study area. This study was supported by the Russian Science Foundation, project no. 17-14-01112
