An attempt has been made to understand the dynamics behind anomalous cyclogenesis over Indian Ocean during 2013 cyclone seasons, from an atmospheric energetics point of view. Salient features of the results of this study are:Maximum intensification of all the intense cyclonic vortices was associated with an enhancement in both conversion from eddy available potential energy to eddy kinetic energy (AE to KE ) and zonal kinetic energy to eddy kinetic energy (KZ to KE).During intensification of the storms both AE and AZ have shown to be dissipated, suggesting the intensification of storms at the cost of AE and AZ . For all of these systems baroclinic eddy kinetic energy conversions [conversion from AE to KE ] dominates over barotropic eddy kinetic energy conversions [conversion from KZ to KE]. Anomalous cyclogenesis in 2013, at least partly may be attributed to a positive anomaly in Moist Static Energy (MSE) of the environment along with positive anomaly in baroclinic and barotropic eddy kinetic energy conversion during cyclone seasons over the region under study.Release of convective instability in the atmosphere may also be attributed, at least partly, for anomalous cyclogenesis in 2013

Isolation and evolutionary analysis of Australasian topotype of bluetongue virus serotype 4 from India

    Get PDF
Bluetongue (BT) is a Culicoides-borne disease caused by several serotypes of bluetongue virus (BTV). Similar to other insect-borne viral diseases, distribution of BT is limited to distribution of Culicoides species competent to transmit BTV. In the tropics, vector activity is almost year long, and hence, the disease is endemic, with the circulation of several serotypes of BTV, whereas in temperate areas, seasonal incursions of a limited number of serotypes of BTV from neighbouring tropical areas are observed. Although BTV is endemic in all the three major tropical regions (parts of Africa, America and Asia) of the world, the distribution of serotypes is not alike. Apart from serological diversity, geography-based diversity of BTV genome has been observed, and this is the basis for proposal of topotypes. However, evolution of these topotypes is not well understood. In this study, we report the isolation and characterization of several BTV-4 isolates from India. These isolates are distinct from BTV-4 isolates from other geographical regions. Analysis of available BTV seg-2 sequences indicated that the Australasian BTV-4 diverged from African viruses around 3,500 years ago, whereas the American viruses diverged relatively recently (1,684 CE). Unlike Australasia and America, BTV-4 strains of the Mediterranean area evolved through several independent incursions. We speculate that independent evolution of BTV in different geographical areas over long periods of time might have led to the diversity observed in the current virus population

The field experiments were conducted during kharif season of year 2014 & 2015 at Agricultural Research Station, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, Telangana state, India to study the influence of weather parameters on the incidence of thrips population on Bt cotton. The results revealed that the peak incidence of thrips population was recorded on 35th Standard Week i.e., last week of August (32.87 thrips leaf–1) during kharif, 2014 and two peaks i.e., 35th Standard Week i.e., last week of August (33.93 thrips leaf–1) and 40th  Standard Week i.e., the first week of October (40.40 thrips leaf–1) were recorded during kharif, 2015. Thereafter, its population declined gradually during both seasons. Correlations worked out between thrips population and weather parameters revealed that, one week (0.51*) and two weeks lag (0.65**) minimum temperature, one week lag (0.56**) morning relative humidity showed significant and positive influence, while one week lag (–0.44*) evaporation showed significant negative influence on thrips incidence. The prediction model developed for the thrips population revealed that the model explained the variation to an extent of 54 per cent in thrips incidence under the influence of minimum temperature and morning relative humidity

Antecedents of subjective wellbeing among older adults in Kerala

    No full text
Several attempts have been made to assess the quality of life of older people through objective measurement of various factors such as health, income, economic and social status. However, the self-perception of wellbeing has emerged as a critical axis to understand the experience of older people and their overall wellbeing. This emphasis on subjectivity and experience coincides with the cultural turn that the field of gerontology has recently encountered. This study locates the conceptual framework within this epistemological turn and uses the subjective wellbeing inventory (SUBI) from the Kerala Aging Survey 2013. The goal of this study is straightforward. First, it reviews theoretical (particularly, the “convoy model of family relations”, Antonucci in Social support: theory, research and applications. Springer, The Netherlands, pp 21–37, 1985) and empirical work from an interdisciplinary standpoint and sifts through diverse cultural contexts to highlight the complex interactions between family structure, social membership, (physical) health and subjective wellbeing. Second, it offers a descriptive analysis to determine the socio-cultural antecedents of wellbeing among older adults in Kerala. The analysis suggests that age, marital status, gender, household size, education, grand parenting roles and normative expectations are key determinants of subjective wellbeing. Not surprisingly, subjective wellbeing is shown to become worse as one grows older, though this association is amplified for older women. Analysis also suggests that loneliness experienced by the respondents is often a product of a perceived sense of lag between expectations and their fulfilment. Overall, the study provided a nuanced understanding of the critical links between family structure, cultural expectations, socio-demographic factors and subjective wellbeing of older Indians in a changing demographic context.by S. ABSTRACT A field trial was conducted for three consecutive kharif seasons of 2010, 2011 and 2012 to study the efficacy of certain entomopathogenic fungi viz., Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae , Verticilium lecani @ 5 g/l having 1x10 8 CFU along with standard check -Acephate 75% SP @ 1.5 g/l against brown plant hopper, Nilaparvata lugen Stal and predators (mirid bugs and spiders). The results clearly indicated that Acephate 75 SP @ 1.5g/l was highly effective against BPH, but highly toxic to predators with higher grain yield and higher benefit cost ratio. However, B. bassiana, and M. anisopliae @ 5 g/l though found to be ineffective at 5 days after first spray, their efficacy against BPH increased with increase in days after spray and found to be at par with Acephate at 10 days after second spray. Among the entomopathogens, B. bassiana, and M. anisopliae were found to be relatively more effective against BPH and relatively less toxic to predators, followed by V. lecani.

Forecasting tropical cyclone rainfall and flooding hazards and impacts

    No full text
This review summarizes the rapporteur report on advances in monitoring and forecasting of rainfall associated with tropical cyclones (TCs) and its impact during 2014–18, as presented to the 10th International Workshop on TCs (IWTC-10) held in Bali, Indonesia during 5th – 9th December 2022. Major physical processes that can modulate TC rainfall distribution, including topography, storm motion, vertical wind shear, and intensity, along with the fundamental physics of rain bands and clouds as simulated by numerical models, diurnal variation of rainfall, and various synoptic and mesoscale features controlling the rainfall distribution are briefly discussed. Improvements to the dynamic core and physical processes in global models are providing useable forecasts nearly up to 7 days. This report also summarizes, some tools that have been developed to predict TC rainfall. Lately there is a tendency for operational forecasting centers to utilize multi-model ensemble systems for rainfall forecasting that demonstrate superior performance than individual models, ensemble members, or even single model ensembles. Major impacts include pluvial and fluvial floods, and landslides. The techniques developed by various forecasting centers to assist in predicting and communicating the impacts associated with these events are also presented in this report
