    Quantum confinement effects in Si/Ge heterostructures with spatially ordered arrays of self-assembled quantum dots

    Magnetotunneling spectroscopy was employed to probe the confinement in vertical Si/Ge double-barrier resonant tunneling diodes with regularly distributed Ge quantum dots. Their current-voltage characteristics reveal a step-like behavior in the vicinity of zero bias, indicating resonant tunneling of heavy-holes via three-dimensionally confined unoccupied hole states in Ge quantum dots. Assuming parabolic confinement we extract the strength of the confinement potential of quantum dots.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    We report the discovery of cool DZ white dwarfs, which lie in the SDSS (u-g) vs. (g-r) two-color diagram across and below the main sequence.     Aims. System parameters of the object LTT560 are determined in order to clarify its nature and evolutionary status. Methods. We apply time-series photometry to reveal orbital modulations of the light curve, time-series spectroscopy to measure radial velocities of features from both the primary and the secondary star, and flux-calibrated spectroscopy to derive temperatures of both components. Results. We find that LTT 560 is composed of a low temperature (T ∼ 7500 K) DA white dwarf as the primary and an M5.5±1 mainsequence star as the secondary component. The current orbital period is Porb = 3.54(07) h.We derive a mass ratio Msec/Mwd = 0.36(03) and estimate the distance to d = 25–40 pc. Long-term variation of the orbital light curve and an additional Hα emission component on the white dwarf indicate activity in the system, probably in the form of flaring and/or accretion events

    Electron microscopic mapping of deletions on a streptococcal plasmid carrying extraordinarily long inverted repeats

    Deletions [Delta]101, [Delta]102, and [Delta]103 which occurred within the extraordinarily long inverted repeats of the self-ligated large EcoRI fragment of the Streptococcal MLS (macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramin B)-resistance plasmid pSM19035 led to the formation of plasmids pDB101, pDB102, and pDB103. Their molecular lengths were determined by contour length measurements to be 17.8, 17.4, and 13.9 kb, respectively. Electron microscopic examination of self-annealed molecules revealed stem-loop structures with inverted repeats comprising 41 to 91% of the mass of plasmids. Two unique sequences (US1 and US2) separated the inverted repeats in the case of pDB101 and pDB103, while in pDB102 the repeats were joined at one end and separated at the other by a unique sequence (US2). The size of the unique sequence US2 was identical for all three plasmids, and the location of the resistance determinant was determined by electron microscopic examination of self-annealed molecules of the recombinant plasmid pDB201.     FOXP3+CD25− Tumor Cells with Regulatory Function in Sézary Syndrome

    Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) has been suggested by in vitro experiments to represent a malignant CD4+ T-cell proliferation with a regulatory T-cell (Treg) phenotype (CD4+CD25+FOXP3+). We investigated percentages of FOXP3+ and CD25+ cells in the blood of 15 Sézary, 14 mycosis fungoides (MF), and 10 psoriasis (Pso) patients and 20 normal healthy donors (NHDs). We found similar numbers of FOXP3+ cells in MF (10.4% of blood CD4+ cells) and Pso (11.1%) patients and NHDs (9.8%). In 8 of 15 (53%) Sézary patients, significantly reduced percentages of FOXP3+ cells were seen in blood (2.9%) and skin (10.4%). Interestingly, 6 of 15 (40%) Sézary patients showed significantly increased percentages of FOXP3+ cells (39.7% (blood), 20.3% (skin)); however, these cells did not express CD25. In these latter patients, clone-specific TCR-Vβ-chain antibodies were used to demonstrate that these FOXP3+CD25− cells were monoclonal CTCL tumor cells. FOXP3+CD25− CTCL tumor cells showed a highly demethylated status of the foxp3 gene locus similar to Treg cells, and they were functionally able to suppress IL-2 mRNA induction in TCR-stimulated conventional T cells. Thus, FOXP3+CD25− CTCL tumor cells with functional features of Treg cells define a subgroup of Sézary patients who might carry a different prognosis and might require differential treatment

    First measurement of the Non-instantaneous response Time of a χ(3) nonlinear optical effect

    The third harmonic of a few-cycle pulse, generated at different dielectric surfaces, is investigated using interferometric frequency-resolved optical gating. We present direct experimental evidence for a non-instantaneous nonlinear response in a TiO2 thin film whereas surface third-harmonic generation in a SiO2 sample does not show any indication for non-instanteneity. To the best of our knowledge, this constitutes the first report of a non-instantaneous nonlinear optical response of a dielectric optical material

    Stable quantum systems in anti-de Sitter space: Causality, independence and spectral properties

    If a state is passive for uniformly accelerated observers in n-dimensional anti-de Sitter space-time (i.e. cannot be used by them to operate a perpetuum mobile), they will (a) register a universal value of the Unruh temperature, (b) discover a PCT symmetry, and (c) find that observables in complementary wedge-shaped regions necessarily commute with each other in this state. The stability properties of such a passive state induce a "geodesic causal structure" on AdS and concommitant locality relations. It is shown that observables in these complementary wedge-shaped regions fulfill strong additional independence conditions. In two-dimensional AdS these even suffice to enable the derivation of a nontrivial, local, covariant net indexed by bounded spacetime regions. All these results are model-independent and hold in any theory which is compatible with a weak notion of space-time localization.     Delaying academic tasks and feeling bad about it

    Abstract. Procrastination is the irrational delay of an intended task and is common among students. A delay can only be defined as procrastination when it is voluntary, the action was intended but not implemented, and the delay is accompanied by subjective discomfort. Established scales of procrastination cover mainly behavioral aspects but have neglected the emotional aspect. This inaccuracy concerning the construct validity might entail misconceptions of procrastination. Accordingly, we developed and validated the Behavioral and Emotional Academic Procrastination Scale (BEPS), which covers all aspects of the definition of procrastination. The 6-item scale measuring self-reported academic procrastination was tested in three studies. Study 1 (N = 239) evaluated the psychometric qualities of the BEPS, indicating good item characteristics and internal consistency. Study 2 (N = 1,441) used confirmatory factor analysis and revealed two correlated factors: one covering the behavioral aspect and the other reflecting the emotional aspect. Measurement invariance was shown through longitudinal and multigroup confirmatory factor analyses. Study 3 (N = 234) provided evidence for the scale’s convergent validity through correlations with established procrastination scales, self-efficacy, and neuroticism. The BEPS thus economically operationalizes all characteristics of academic procrastination and appears to be a reliable and valid self-report measure

    Nuclearity and Thermal States in Conformal Field Theory

    We introduce a new type of spectral density condition, that we call L^2-nuclearity. One formulation concerns lowest weight unitary representations of SL(2,R) and turns out to be equivalent to the existence of characters. A second formulation concerns inclusions of local observable von Neumann algebras in Quantum Field Theory. We show the two formulations to agree in chiral Conformal QFT and, starting from the trace class condition for the semigroup generated by the conformal Hamiltonian L_0, we infer and naturally estimate the Buchholz-Wichmann nuclearity condition and the (distal) split property. As a corollary, if L_0 is log-elliptic, the Buchholz-Junglas set up is realized and so there exists a beta-KMS state for the translation dynamics on the net of C*-algebras for every inverse temperature beta>0. We include further discussions on higher dimensional spacetimes. In particular, we verify that L^2-nuclearity is satisfied for the scalar, massless Klein-Gordon field.Comment: 37 pages, minor correction
