    The Role of Project Management in Fostering Creativity: Towards Successful Architectural Design Projects

    The present study aims to identify best practices for project management, which can reinforce creativity in architectural design projects. Although creativity is a critical component of any successful design process, there is no existing literature or systematic documentation of what project management can do to cultivate it within an architecture work environment. Therefore, this research first explores existing theories and bibliography to define creativity and its conducive factors, and draw some hypotheses on the potential contributions of an architectural project manager. The validity of these hypotheses in practice is then tested through a survey, which mostly confirmed and expanded them. The combined findings, from primary and secondary research, highlighted the roles played by the project manager’s leadership approach, the project team characteristics, the team members’ motivation, the workflow structure, and the creativity-relevant processes. These contributed to a partial framework of recommendations and suggested practices, which help walk a fine line between project constraints and new ideas in architectural design projects

    Immunohistochemical expression of CD44 in thyroid gland lesions

    BACKGROUND: CD44 is a polymorphic family of cell surface proteoglycans and glycoproteins implicated in cell-to-cell and cell-to-matrix adhesion interactions and tumor metastasis. Its expression appears to be an indicator of invasive and metastatic behavior in carcinomas. The purpose of our study is to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of CD44 protein in thyroid lesions and its association to other histopathological parameters. METHODS: Samples from thyroid lesions were obtained from 40 patients treated in our hospital. The material consisted of 5 cases of multinodular goiter, 7 cases of thyroiditis (Hashimoto type), 5 cases of follicular adenoma, 4 cases of Hurthle cell tumor, 15 cases of thyroid carcinoma (11 papillary carcinomas, and 4 myeloid tumors), and 4 cases of normal thyroid tissue. Immunostaining was performed using the Ventana ES automated immunostainer. A monoclonal antibody was used and avidin-biotin method was applied to paraffin-embedded samples. A membranous immunostaining pattern was considered positive. RESULTS: CD44 expression was detected in three adenomas (60%), mostly of follicular type, and in eight carcinomas (72%). The CD44 immunostaining was especially apparent in papillary type of carcinomas which showed high expression. In normal thyroid tissue, a reduced CD44 expression was observed. CONCLUSION: The results of our study indicate that deregulated expression of CD44 contributes to the ability of thyroid carcinomas for invasion and metastasis and may constitute a prognostic factor for malignant biological behavior

    Nature-based solutions for flood-drought risk mitigation in vulnerable urbanizing parts of East-Africa

    Urbanization and climate changes have direct impacts on ecosystems and the services they provide to society, thus influencing human well-being and health. Urban sprawl may conflict with ecosystem services, e.g. enhancing water-related stresses and risks of, e.g., droughts and floods, with significant economic, environmental and societal impacts. Such hydro-climatic extremes and their societal impacts are evident around the world. East Africa is a region with highly vulnerable populations to frequent floods and droughts. To achieve long-term sustainable solutions to such water-related risks and problems, we need to understand and plan for the feedback mechanisms between population expansion and associated land-use changes and their impacts on ecosystem services. The potential of nature-based solutions to mitigate these risk and problems in urban development under climate change needs to be considered and accounted for in spatial planning and management strategies.</p

    Prenatal diagnosis for CF using High Resolution Melting Analysis and simultaneous haplotype analysis through QF-PCR

    AbstractBackgroundHigh Resolution Melting (HRM) Analysis is a validated, robust, low-cost, high throughput CF screening method. Here, we report the development and retrospective evaluation of the diagnostic value of a novel multiplex HRM, genotyping and haplotyping method for CF prenatal diagnosis (generic HRM/haplotyping).Methods80 study samples from 20 carrier couples referred for PND (whole blood in EDTA and CVS or amniotic fluid) were genotyped retrospectively using the suggested protocol.ResultsAll DNA samples (variable sources, extraction methods and unknown concentrations) were successfully amplified by the 1st and 2nd round PCR. The Se, Sp, NPV and PPV for the generic HRM/haplotyping method are calculated at 100%.ConclusionsThis generic protocol for PND using HRM, facilitates the simultaneous analysis of DNA samples from various sources in a fast, robust and efficient way. It can be easily adapted and applied for any genetic condition

    Cytology ABCDE: A Practical ABCDE Algorithm for Cytology Diagnosis

    Aims An approach to the process of undertaking cytopathology diagnosis for medical students and those who operate with cytology specimens is presented. Material and Methods This simple mnemonic (ABCDE) can be used as a memory aid determining the order in which cells or tissue fragments should be evaluated. When receiving a slide for diagnosis and prior to examining it under the microscope we need to make sure that it is correctly labelled and prepared (Correct) and we also need to know or gather all available information concerning the patient (A, Available Information). Once under the microscope, we check the type of cells and the adequacy of specimen (B, Body & Being Adequate). Next, by taking into consideration the cellular morphology and potentially by performing ancillary studies we proceed to answer if the cells are neoplastic or not (C, Cancer). We then either form a differential diagnosis list or we end up with our final diagnosis (D, Differential diagnosis or Diagnosis), which is followed by the writing of the report (E, Exhibit). Results These sequential steps (Correct ABCDE) followed as an ad hoc procedure by most pathologists, are important in order to achieve a complete and clear diagnosis and report, which is intended to support optimal clinical practice. Conclusions This ABCDE concept is a generic standard approach which is not limited to specific specimens and can help improve both cytopathology diagnoses and the quality of the final cytopathology reports

    The Immunocytochemistry Is a Valuable Tool in the Diagnosis of Papillary Thyroid Cancer in FNA's Using Liquid-Based Cytology

    Introduction. Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common malignancy of the thyroid. An accurate cytological diagnosis is based on distinctive cytological features in combination with immunocytochemistry. Methods. A number of 83 fine needle aspirations, positive for papillary thyroid cancer (44 from thyroid nodules and 39 from cervical lymph nodes), were studied using Thin Layer Cytology. A panel of the immunomarkers Cytokeratin-19, Galectin-3, HBME1, CD-44, CD-56, and E-Cadherin was performed. Results. Positive expression of CK-19 was observed in 77 cases (92.7%), of Galectin-3 in 74 cases (89.1%), of HBME1 in 65 (78.3%), and of CD-44 in 72 cases (86.7%). Loss of expression of CD-56 was observed in 80 cases (96.4%) and of E-cadherin in 78 (93.9%). Conclusions. Our data suggest that Thin Layer Cytology increases the diagnostic accuracy in papillary carcinoma and seems to be a promising technique for further investigation of thyroid lesions permitting the possibility to use archive material. Positive immunoexpression of CK-19, Galectin-3, HBME-1, and CD-44 improves the diagnostic accuracy of papillary thyroid cancer. Furthermore, loss of E-cadherin and of CD-56 expression is a feature of malignancy
