Diari 1963-1977
This book is the fifth and last volume of the Diari of Giuseppe DessĂ, a publication made possible by Franca Linari's transcription combined with the attentive editorship of Francesca Nencioni. The series began with the account of DessĂ's early years (1926-1931) and continued with precious details of the period of his development (1931-1948) and the literary production of his maturity (1949-1951; 1952-1962). This time the author's experience and his own notes enable what is almost an 'autobiography of the artistic process' that offers eloquent insight into the creation of Paese d'ombre: not only a reconstruction of the genesis of the novel that won DessĂ the Premio Strega, but also the sketching out of events and characters and the gradual definition of the plot. The literary evidence does not stop here, since significant texts of his theatrical production (Eleonora d'Arborea) can also be placed in this last fifteen years, along with narrative (for example Lei era l'acqua). All is set against the backdrop of family, friends (who also suddenly disappear), political passion and a courageous struggle against disease
Diari 1952-1962
In these private notes, the quest for the self appears like a journey of dual metaphorical significance through the intricate weft of the pages and the labyrinth of life. The Diari 1952-1962 of Giuseppe DessĂ are presented here in Franca Linari's meticulous transcription accompanied by an introduction and an attentive commentary by Francesca Nencioni. Following the previous volumes, which made it possible to reconstruct the history of his youthful education and the productions of his early maturity, this one now reveals significant changes in the writer's life. A new female figure (Luisa) accompanies a period in which the narrative production that has become the dominant passion becomes decidedly more intensive and continuative, hand-in-hand with an increase in the collaborations with journals and the desire to experiment new forms of expression ushered in by the theatre

From a tender age Giuseppe Dessà was in the habit of entrusting to private writings the unquiet story of his formation, recording against the background of significant vital abodes the events of his life, his reading and his encounters … Franca Linari, who has for some time been studying the relations between the writing of diaries and narrative composition, after the critical edition of the Diaries 1926 –1931 and 1931–1948 (Roma, Jouvence, 1993 and 1999), is now proposing this new collection, philologically impeccable and attentively annotated, which makes it possible to reappraise years subjectively rich in changes and in artistic creation (in the form of stories, work for the theatre, collaboration with important journals), in the cultural and political climate of post-war Italy
Per le riviste di Vecchietti negli anni ’30-’40
Retracing DessĂ’s collaboration in the magazines “L’Orto”, “Primato” and “Cronache” directed by Giorgio Vecchietti, among stories, essays and reviews that have remained largely unpublished, means deepening the writer’s artistic development by exploring into the creative laboratory of his debut. The 36 texts collected and commented by Francesca Bartolini allow us to analyse the thematic and stylistic approaches that were further developed and deepened in the subsequent production. At the same time they take into account the years of the fascist dictatorship, allowing us to investigate the development of an intellectual conscience engaged in an anti-fascist, rebel movement typical of many writers of that generation. Weaving the critical discourse with the reading of the correspondence, the complex relationship that linked DessĂ to the three editorial offices is noted, testifying to the passion of a young artist eager to follow his inclination, but also aware of the difficulty of preserving his freedom and identity in the limitations of the regime
Tre amici tra la Sardegna e Ferrara
A private and distant Sardinia animates the texts of this double correspondence, between archaic landscapes and personal and literary mythologies, in which Ferrara, the town of the authors' youthful years, is occasionally mentioned, with its richness of life, magazines (Bottai’s «Primato», «Corriere Padano» with Bassani…), evening meetings in taverns or rented rooms, walks along the Rampari river, and the use of playful nicknames which would continue even after youth ended. A world made of concrete things, animated and enlivened by strong intellectual curiosities and passions, emerges from the letters reconstructing the life and history of Giuseppe DessĂ, Mario Pinna and Claudio Varese, which have been carefully transcribed and annotated by Costanza Chimirri. The correspondence opens with the years spent in Ferrara - after Pisa, a crucial moment for their education - and allows the author to reconstruct atmospheres and environments, readings and work, offering a significant cross-section of twentieth-century Italy from within. The letters are never disconnected from one another, but rather united by the continuous call to the triple friendship in the name of Giuseppe DessĂ, who is always present in the others’ speeches even when he is not actually mentioned. The correspondence also allowed to bring to light unpublished texts by the most secluded member of the group (Mario Pinna, an avid reader of the classics, Spanish specialist, author of poems in the dialect of Logudoro and of short stories set in Sardinia), to strengthen the role that has always been played by the eldest, Claudio Varese, the maĂ®tre-camarade; and to confirm once again how much DessĂ’s creative universe, deeply marked by the biographical element, has continued to develop and feed under the wise and affectionate gaze of fraternal friends, in an exchange which can give life to an actual collective imagination
Lettere 1935-1972
Just over 150 epistolary pieces, from the twentieth-century archives of Florence and Rome, are published for the first time thanks to Alberto Baldi’s careful transcription, which does not only allow the reconstruction of the story of a friendship born around the pages of newspapers and consolidated over time to involve the partners of the two writers (Gianna Manzini, Lina Baraldi and Luisa Babini), but also follows Giuseppe DessĂ’s presence in one of the most widely read newspapers in Rome. The editorial correspondence, started early by Falqui, the “mover of culture” and through frequency peaks (from 1948 to 1958), soon turned into the advice of a sympathetic reader who, despite the political dissensions for the conservative line of the newspaper "Il Tempo", deserves the credit of having continued a collaboration which would nourish some of the writer’s most significant collections of short stories. The book ends with thirty-eight narrative texts by DessĂ, scattered on the «third page» and never collected in a volume before
Lettere 1936-1963
Author of Architettura del medioevo in Sardegna which won him the Premio Nazionale Olivetti in 1956, Raffaello Delogu was an art historian and Commissioner for Antiquities and Monuments in Sardinia, Abruzzo and Sicily. His correspondence with one of the most eminent Italian writers of the second half of the twentieth century, as transcribed and lavishly annotated here by Monica Graceffa, reveals him not only as a committed intellectual devoted to the study of ancient and modern art, but also as a caustic and playful friend. His dialogue with Giuseppe Dessà commenced in their youth, when Dessà was an amateur painter on the way to maturity, who instead rapidly developed into a mature writer and attentive connoisseur of all forms of art. In addition to their studies and mutual friends (including Claudio Varese and Maria Lai), they also shared an interest in painting and in what Dessà was experiencing (his moves, his political passion) and what he was writing (fiction, drama, essays); important in this regard are the letters touching on the collaboration of both on the Sardinian issue of Pietro Calamandrei's «Il Ponte»
DessĂ e la Sardegna
It is a Sardinia out of time, on the threshold of history, the one emerging from the pages of Giuseppe DessĂ’s novels and short stories. But it is also a living Sardinia, full of the contradictions occurring in the landscape and in the vicissitudes of men. The profound relationship which bound DessĂ to his land, nourishing his fiction, non-fiction and intellectual works, stands out noticeably in the correspondence collected in this volume. The unpublished letters, found in four different Italian archives, were transcribed and duly annotated by Giulio Vannucci. They tell about the birth and composition of a 1951 special issue of Pietro Calamandrei’s «Il Ponte» dedicated to Sardinia, and reconstruct the genesis of the splendid anthology «Scoperta della Sardegna», issued in 1965 by Alberto Vigevani's publisher «Il Polifilo». In those two extraordinary books, the writer left the narrating voice to others for once. Within them, he built a different choral story of the island not only through the words of friends, but also through those of scholars, historians, politicians and many more. In the case of «Il Ponte», DessĂ put himself at Calamandrei’s service to find suitable collaborators and talk about post World War Two Sardinia, while choosing researchers who could trace a new and original guide for the cultural discovery of the island for «Il Polifilo». The correspondence goes over all of this, but also over culture in the Sixties and the dialogues and intellectual tensions accompanying DessĂ in the writing of two works which, thanks to their anthropological and social acuity, still tell the modern reader of a 'vital home' that was his
