Landing of тАШFlying GurnardтАЩ in Mumbai
A rare fish тАШflying gurnardтАЩ was landed
by a trawler operating in 70-100 m depth
in the sea off Mumbai. The species was
identified as Dactyloptena peterseni
(Nystrom, 1887) and it is reported for the
first time along the Indian coast

Salinity tolerance and fishery of mud shrimp Solenocera crassicornis (H. Milne Edwards) in the coastal waters of Mumbai
Salinity tolerance of mud shrimp Solenocera crassicornis investigated at different salinities ranging
from 15тА░ to 55тА░ showed that shrimps in the salinity range 30тА░ - 42тА░ survived but those in lower and
higher salinities died soon after the transfer. Ionic concentration in the hemolymph and free amino acids
in the body muscle in response to different salinity ranges showed hypo-regulation initially but later
became hyposmotic to the medium and died eventually when the salinity decreased. The abundance of
shrimp showed inverse relationship with rainfall and consequent lowering of salinity in the inshore
waters. The study showed that S. crassicornis can regulate osmotic and ionic concentrations of body
fluids efficiently in the salinity range of 30 - 42тА░ but unlike euryhaline penaeid shrimps it is a poor
regulator at lower salinities and therefore it migrates offshore during monsoon months
Dynamics of the Groundwater Levels in Shallow Aquifers of WRC-1 Watershed, Chargarh River Basin, Central India
Shallow unconfined aquifer in hard rock terrain generally have complicated and heterogeneous hydrogeological setup. Present study incorporates dynamics of the static groundwater levels in the Chargarh river basin, Central India, during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon season, with special reference to lithological variation. The geological formations exposed in the basin are Deccan basalt and alluvium. The average pre-monsoon and post-monsoon static water levels in the basalt formation are 12.21 mbgl to 6.14 mbgl respectively, with 6.07-meter seasonal water table fluctuation. On the other hand, average pre-monsoon and post-monsoon static water levels (SWL) in the alluvial formation are 16.84 mbgl to 4.64 mbgl respectively, with 12.20 m the water table fluctuation (WTF). The pre-monsoon SWL in alluvium is deeper as compared to the pre-monsoon SWL in basalt. Similarly, WTF in alluvium is higher than WTF in basalt. These observations are reversed to that of the general assumption, that the WTF in soft rock formations are lower as compared to WTF in hard rock terrain. This can be attributed to the excessive withdrawal of groundwater for orange cultivation and sporadic artificial recharge structures in the alluvial formation
Transient thermal stresses due to axisymmetric heat supply in a semi-infinite thick circular plate
The present paper deals with the determination of thermal stresses in a semi-infinite thick circular plate of a finite length and infinite extent subjected to an axisymmetric heat supply. A thick circular plate is considered having constant initial temperature and arbitrary heat flux is applied on the upper and lower face. The governing heat conduction equation has been solved by using integral transform technique. The results are obtained in terms of BesselтАЩs function. The thermoelastic behavior has been computed numerically and illustrated graphically for a steel plate
Morphometric studies in the genus Clerodendrum L.
Six Clerodendrum L. species from Kolhapur district were morphometrically analyzed with the help of PCA, cluster analysis and CD. It was observed that the quantitative characters viz. petiole length, leaf length and leaf width have great significance in delimitation of all the species and corolla tube length, leaf width, gynoecium length and leaf length have great contribution in separation of the taxa. Clerodendrum multiflorum (Burm.f.) O. Ktze.- Clerodendrum inerme (L.) Gaertn., Clerodendrum paniculatum L. - Clerodendrum viscosum Vent. and Clerodendrum inerme (L.) Gaertn. - Clerodendrum serratum (L.) Moon. are very closely related with each other and Clerodendrum multiflorum (Burm.f.) O.Ktze.- Clerodendrum paniculatum L. and Clerodendrum multiflorum (Burm.f.) O. Ktze. - Clerodendrum viscosum Vent. are significantly different from each other
Population eruption of sunset shell Siliqua radiata (Linnaeus, 1758) along Versova beach in Mumbai
Sudden population eruption of Siliqua radiata during monsoon months (June-August 2008) was
observed along Versova beach in Mumbai. Relationship between shell length (SL) and total weight
(TW) was TW = 0.0001137 * SL 2.67922, shell length (SL) and meat weight (MW) was MW = 0.0000237
* SL 2.91756. S. radiata had isometric growth. The average density was estimated as 14 per square meter
and the biomass was 153 g.m-2. The proportion of meat was 60%. Analysis of meat showed high amount
of heavy metals namely copper, cadmium and arsenic
Fishery and biology of white sardine, Escualosa thoracata (Valenciennes) at Versova, Bombay
Gill net fishery exclusively for the white sardine, Escualosa
thoracata, which started in mid eighties at Versova, is described.
During 1987-88 to 1991-92 period the annual average landing of the
species was 202.2 tons with year to year fluctuations. The peak fishing
season was during April-May. The size range of the species in the gill
net was 41-105 m
