A rare fish ‘flying gurnard’ was landed

by a trawler operating in 70-100 m depth

in the sea off Mumbai. The species was

identified as Dactyloptena peterseni

(Nystrom, 1887) and it is reported for the

first time along the Indian coast

On 8th May 2009, about 20 fishes with striking

colour pattern were landed at Sassoon Docks in

Mumbai. They were caught by a trawler operating at

70-100 m depth off Mumbai. Four specimens were

brought for identification at the Mumbai Research

Centre of CMFRI. The species was identified as

Dactyloptena peterseni (Nystrom, 1887)

The species wasidentified as Dactyloptena peterseni(Nystrom, 1887) and it is reported for thefirst time along the Indian coast.The fishes belonging to the familyDactylopteridae are commonly known as Flying Gurnards.This common name arose in thebelief that with their largepectoral fin they could fly orglide for short distances.However, there is no evidencethat they ever leave the water andfly or glide. However, they havecharacteristic ‘Helmet like’ skullwith a strong pre-opercular spinedue to which many havesuggested that these fishes shouldbe called as ‘Helmet Gurnard’.On 8th May 2009, about 20fishes with strikingly different morphology and colourpattern were landed at Sassoon docks in Mumbai. Theywere caught by a trawler operating at 70-100 m depth offMumbai. The fishers, fish vendors as well as the onlookerswere awestruck to find such weird crocodile looking fishesand suspecting them as poisonous. Four specimens werebrought for taxonomic identification and biologicalobservation at the Mumbai Research Centre and detailsare being worked out. The species D. peterseni showedabsence of 2nd dorsal spine, which in other species usuallyoccurring in the Indian waters, is present. The speciesbelonging to the Genus Dactyloptena have no fisheryimportance therefore, no separate statistics are available.If caught incidentally, they are marketed fresh but rarelyused as a food.
