    A Search for the Production of Technicolor Particles at the D-Zero Detector

    A search for the Technicolor processes p{bar p} {yields} {rho}{sub T}{sup {+-}} {yields} W{sup {+-}}{pi}{sub T}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{nu}b{bar b} and p{bar p} {yields} {rho}{sub T}{sup 0} {yields} W{sup {+-}}{pi}{sub T}{sup {+-}} {yields} {mu}{nu}b{bar c} is conducted at the D0 detector. Selection requirements are individually optimized for each of twenty mass hypotheses by means of a random grid search. No excess is seen in a 291 pb{sup -1} data set and 95% confidence level upper limits are set on the Technicolor production cross section. The mass combinations M{sub {rho}} = 195 GeV/c{sup 2}, M{sub {pi}} = 100 GeV/c{sup 2} and M{sub {rho}} = 200 GeV/c{sup 2}, M{sub {pi}} = 105 GeV/c{sup 2} are excluded for the choice of the Technicolor scale parameter M{sub V} = 500 GeV

    Deep Retrofit System Solution Assessment for Philadelphia Navy Yard Office Buildings

    Initial assessments of economically attractive integrated building energy system solutions that can substantially reduce energy consumption in two medium-sized office buildings in the Philadelphia Navy Yard are presented. These sites were selected because they are the current and future headquarters of the DOE Energy Efficient Buildings Hub (EEB HUB). Energy efficient retrofit solutions involving integrated building systems with 40-60% site- and source-energy reduction potential relative to selected baseline energy consumption configurations are identified. The scope of retrofit options explored and integrated involve the building envelope, lighting and HVAC systems as well as the related control systems, providing a spectrum of retrofit options that range from low-/no-cost options to relatively higher capital cost options that involve significant capital upgrades and facility renovations. The energy savings estimates are based on combining multiple energy conservation measures (ECMs) that are tailored to the building use type and climate conditions. Energy performance (energy savings potential) and economic impact (NPV, IRR, and simple payback) of these retrofit system solution recommendations are assessed for two office buildings – Building 101 and Building 661, at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. A suite of retrofit system packages is presented for each building with a range of initial investments and economic returns to assist the investment decision making process, by stakeholders such as the building owner and operator. Results of the cost benefit analyses will be presented in light of incentives for high performance office buildings in the Philadelphia ten-county region

    Investigation of Different Transfer Functions for Optical Limiting Amplifier used in a 2R Burst Mode Optical Regenerator

    The major difference between a continuous mode optical regenerator (CMOR) and a burst mode optical regenerator (BMOR) is that a BMOR is capable of handling large variations in the input power which makes it useful in optical packet switched and optical burst switched networks. This is due to the optical limiting amplifier (OLA) present in the BMOR. Using computer modelling, the impact of using different OLA non-linear transfer functions on the output bit error rate of a system consisting of a cascade of 2R BMORs has been investigated.  The effect of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise introduced in the inter-regenerator links has also been taken into consideration.

    Analysis of 55 cases of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor in an Indian population and review of literature

    This study reviews the demographic, clinical and radiographic features of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor(AOT) diagnosed in an Indian population over 50 years and also evaluate and compare follicular AOT(F-AOT) and extra-follicular AOT(EF-AOT). 55 diagnosed cases of AOT from 1971-2020 were studied retrospectively. The data regarding the age, sex, location, variant of AOT, duration, clinical features, radiographic appearance, treatment and recurrence were collected and analysed. Of the 722 odontogenic tumors diagnosed, 7.6% were AOTs with higher prevalence of extra-follicular (67.3%) than follicular (32.7%) variant. All the tumors were intraosseous with a marked predilection for maxilla over mandible, ratio 2:1. The patients mean age was 19.8 years with slightly higher female predilection (male:female ratio - 1:1.5). The anterior region (76.4%) was more frequently affected and entire quadrant was involved in 21.8% cases. Clinically, asymptomatic, slow-growing swelling was seen in 81.8% cases with duration of 15 days to 10 years. Radiographically, AOT appeared as well-corticated radiolucent lesion. Canine was the most commonly impacted tooth. Recurrence was seen in 3 cases. Interestingly, in this series extra-follicular was twice more common than follicular AOT. Few cases involved the entire quadrant or crossed the midline of either jaws

    Clinical Profile and Outcome of Conservatively Managed Emphysematous Pyelonephritis

    Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a severe, necrotizing renal parenchymal infection characterized by production of intraparenchymal gas. EPN predominantly affects female diabetics and immunocompromised patients. In a three-year period 2008–2011, a total of 8 patients were admitted to our hospital. All of them were diabetics, and both males and females were equally affected. These patients showed vague symptoms at admission and frequently presented with fever, loin pain, dysuria, and pyuria necessitating urgent medical attention. EPN required radiological diagnosis. CT scan revealed bilateral EPN with urinary obstruction and hydronephrosis in 50% of patients. Escherichia coli was found to be the causative organism in all the patients. Treatment comprised of resuscitation, normalization of serum electrolytes and blood sugars, administration of parenteral antibiotics, and relieving ureteric obstruction if present. All the patients improved with conservative management without any mortality

    Impact of mixing and aeration on cell culture performance and quality

    In order to support large-scale biologics manufacturing, it is important to establish scale-down models which can match the process performance and product quality of large scale bioreactors. This can potentially be achieved by mimicking the microenvironment that the cells experience in large scale by maintaining same set points for scale independent parameters and scaling down other scale dependent parameters such as agitation and aeration. In order to understand the impact of agitation and aeration on cell culture performance and product quality, we studied different impellers and sparger configurations in a 3L scale down model using CHO cells. The experiments showed significant impacts of impeller types, impeller orientation, and sparger types on cell culture performance and product quality. This data along with additional bioreactor characterization data for kLa, mixing times and shear stress will be presented. These studies demonstrate the importance of microenvironment as cell culture processes are scaled up or down and help establish a successful scale down model for a product manufactured at multiple manufacturing sites

    HLA-B∗57 and Gender Influence the Occurrence of Tuberculosis in HIV Infected People of South India

    Background. Substantial evidence exists for HLA and other host genetic factors being determinants of susceptibility or resistance to infectious diseases. However, very little information is available on the role of host genetic factors in HIV-TB coinfection. Hence, a longitudinal study was undertaken to investigate HLA associations in a cohort of HIV seropositive individuals with and without TB in Bangalore, South India. Methods. A cohort of 238 HIV seropositive subjects were typed for HLA-A, B, and DR by PCR-SSP and followed up for 5 years or till manifestation of Tuberculosis. HLA data of 682 HIV Negative healthy renal donors was used as control. Results. The ratio of males and females in HIV cohort was comparable (50.4% and 49.6%). But the incidence of TB was markedly lower in females (12.6%,) than males (25.6%). Further, HLA-B*57 frequency in HIV cohort was significantly higher among females without TB (21.6%, 19/88) than males (1.7%, 1/59); P = 0.0046; OR = 38. CD4 counts also were higher among females in this cohort. Conclusion. This study suggests that HIV positive women with HLA-B*57 have less occurrence of TB as compared to males
