    Elastic properties of the aorta and factors affecting aortic stiffness in patients with

    Objectives: In this study, we evaluated aortic stiffnessand echocardiographic and laboratory factors affectingaortic stiffness in patients with metabolic syndrome(MetS).Materials and methods: Forty-six patients (25 male,mean age 47.3±6.5 years) with the diagnosis of MetS accordingto the Adult Treatment Panel III Final Report criteriawere included. Forty-four age and gender matchedhealthy subjects (18 male, mean age 46.0±6.1 years)were recruited as the control group. Aortic strain, distensibilityand stiffness index were calculated by M-modeechocardiography and diastolic parameters were measured.Results: Left ventricular mass index (LVMI), decelerationtime (DT), isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT) wereincreased and mitral E/A ratio was decreased in patientswith MetS compared to controls. In the MetS patients,aortic distensibility was significantly decreased (10.4±3.5cm2.dyn-1.10-6 vs. 12.7±3.4 cm2.dyn-1.10-6, p=0.002),and ASI was significantly increased (6.5±2.0 vs. 3.2±0.8,p<0.001). ASI was positively correlated with triglycerides,fasting glucose, uric acid, hsCRP, LVMI, DT, IVRT andsystolic blood pressure level, and was negatively correlatedwith HDL-cholesterol and mitral E/A ratio. In regressionanalysis, hsCRP (p=0.05) and systolic blood pressurelevel (p<0.001) were independent predictors of ASI.Conclusions: ASI is increased in patients with MetS. Inthese patients; decrease in aortic elasticity properties wasassociated with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction.     Beyazlatma sonrasında antioksidan uygulamasının minenin bağlanma kuvvetine etkisi

    Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, % 10 sodyum askorbat (SA), %6.5 üzüm çekirdeği özü (ÜÇÖ) ve % 10 alfa-tokoferol (α-TP)’ ün farklı uygulama sürelerinde, beyazlatılmış mineye, adeziv rezin simanın makaslama bağlanma kuvvetini değerlendirmektir.Gereç ve Yöntemler: 108 adet insan üst santral dişi 9 gruba ayrılmıştır (n:12). Kontrol grubu dışındaki bütün gruplara % 40’lık hidrojen peroksit (HP) kullanarak beyazlatma işlemi uygulanmıştır.     Determination of the Best Growth Curve and Measurement Interval in Norduz Male Lambs

    The aim of this study, was to determine the best non-linear model and measure interval (biweekly or monthly) in explaining the body weight-age relationship in Norduz male lambs born in 2004. For this aim, Brody, Logistic, Gompertz and Richards non-linear models were fitted to the average body weight-age data with 15 (biweekly) days and 30 (monthly) days of measure intervals. Although, Logistic model become equal to Richards model (99.8%) for two intervals, Logistic model had lower RMSE than Richards model. Therefore, the best non-linear model for 2 intervals was Logistic model having the highest coefficient of determination (R2) but the lowest Root of Means Square Error (RMSE). Contrary to Brody non-linear model, the usage of 30 days of measure intervals performed positive effect on Logistic, Gompertz and Richards non-linear models instead of 15 days of measure interval. As a result, it was concluded that the best non-linear model for Norduz male lambs was Logistic model and the appropriate measure interval for Norduz male lambs was monthly interval

    Bu araştırmada, ilköğretim okulu müdürlerinin öğretimsel liderlikrollerini hangi düzeyde gerçekleştirdikleri öğretmen görüşleri açısındanbelirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini 2011-2012 öğretimyılında, İzmir’in 4 büyük merkez ilçesindeki (Buca, Bornova, Konak,Karşıyaka) 48 ilköğretim okulunda görev yapan 697 öğretmenoluşturmaktadır. Veri toplama aracı olarak Şişman (2004) tarafındangeliştirilen “Okul Müdürlerinin Öğretim Liderliği Davranışları Ölçeği”kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada 11 alt problem yanıtlanmaya çalışılmıştır.Verilerin çözümlenmesinde aritmetik ortalama, standart sapma, t- Testi,Kruskal Wallis Testi, Tek Yönlü Varyans Çözümlemesi ve Scheffée Testikullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın bulguları şunlardır: Öğretmenlerin kendiokul müdürlerinin öğretimsel liderlik davranışlarına ilişkin algılarımüdürlerin yaşlarına, branşlarına, okuldaki görev sürelerine,yöneticilikteki görev sürelerine ve eğitim yönetimi eğitimi alıpalmamalarına göre önemli farklılık göstermemektedir. Öğretmenler 2/3yıllık enstitü mezunu olan okul müdürlerini fakülte ya da yüksekokulmezunu olan okul müdürlerine göre öğretimsel liderlik rollerini sergilemedüzeyini daha olumlu değerlendirmektedirler. Öğretmenler tüm boyutlarve ölçek genelinde, sosyo-ekonomik düzeyi yüksek olan okullarda görevyapan müdürlerin öğretimsel liderlik davranış düzeylerini alt ve ortasosyo-ekonomik düzeydeki çevrelerde yer alan okullarda görev yapanmüdürlerden daha olumlu bulmaktadırlar. Öğretmenler tüm boyutlardave ölçek genelinde orta büyüklükte görev yapan okul müdürlerininöğretimsel liderlik davranışlarını küçük ve büyük okullarda görev yapanokul müdürlerinin öğretimsel liderlik davranışlarına göre daha olumludeğerlendirmektedirler. “Öğretim Süreci ve ÖğrencilerinDeğerlendirilmesi” boyutu hariç tüm boyutlar ile ölçek genelinde özel&nbsp;okullarda görev yapan öğretmenler kendi okul müdürlerinin öğretimselliderlik davranışlarını resmi okullardakilerden daha yüksek düzeydealgılamaktadırlar.&nbsp;This research aims at determining to what extent primary schoolprincipals carry out instructional leadership behaviours according to theprimary school teachers’ perceptions. The research sample consists of 48primary school principals and 697 primary school teachers working in 48primary schools in the central districts of Izmir (Buca, Bornova, Konak,Karşıyaka) in 2011-2012. ‘Personal Data Form’ and ‘InstructionalLeadership Scale’, developed by Şişman (2004) were used to collect thedata for the research. 11 research questions were answered in theresearch. Arithmetic mean, standart deviation, t-test, One Way ANOVA(F), Mann-Whitney U Test, Kruskal Wallis Test and Scheffee Test wereused to analyze the data. The results of the research are summarizedbelow: Teachers’ perceptions of their principals’ instructional leadershipbehaviours do not vary in terms of such variables as their age, branch,the duration of service at school, the duration of service as a principal,having ‘Education Management’ education. The principals graduatedfrom 2/3 year institution perform instructional leadership behavioursbetter and more efficiently than the principals graduated from four-yearfaculty in terms of teachers’ assessments. According to teachers,principals working in upper socio-economic environment are betterinstructional leaders than those who work in middle and low socioeconomic environment. Within the framework of the scale and in all otherrespects, teachers assess principals working in medium-scale schoolsmore favorably than principals working in small-scale and large- scaleschools. Except for the dimension of ‘Evaluation of Teaching Period andStudents’, within the framework of the scale and in all other respects,teachers working in private schools perceive their principals’instructional leadership behaviours as being at a more primary rank thanteachers working in public schools.&nbsp;</p

    Effect of frequent ejaculation on live weight and sperm characteristics in Norduz lambs

    To determine the effects of frequent ejaculation on live weight and sperm characteristics, 12 Norduz rams (1 7 mo) were divided into three groups. The semen samples of the second and third group rams were collected 3 and 5 times per day, respectively, while no semen was collected from the first group. The sperm motility, semen viscosity and mass motility were marginally better in rams of third group (Pc0.05). In both groups semen volume decreased over the days and ejaculate number on the same day. Other parameters were either unaffected or did not follow any definite pattern. It is concluded that live weight of rams and semen characteristics were not affected by taking 3-5 ejaculates in a day in Norduz rams

    Assessment of potential probiotic properties of lactobacillus spp., lactococcus spp., and pediococcus spp. strains isolated from kefir

    WOS: 000283949300029PubMed: 21535612In this study, the metabolic activities (in terms of quantities of the produced lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and exopolysaccharides) of 8 strains of Lactobacillus spp., Lactococcus spp., and Pediococcus spp., were determined. Lactic acid levels produced by strains were 8.1 to 17.4 mg/L. The L. acidophilus Z1L strain produced the maximum amount (3.18 mu g/mL) of hydrogen peroxide. The exopolysaccharides (EPS) production by the strains was ranged between 173 and 378 mg/L. The susceptibility of 7 different antibiotics against these strains was also tested. All strains were found to be sensitive to ampicillin. The tolerance of the strains to low pH, their resistance to bile salts of strains, and their abilities to autoaggregate and coaggregate with Escherichia coli ATCC 11229 were also evaluated. High EPS-producing strains showed significant autoaggregation and coaggregation ability with test bacteria (P < 0.01). A correlation also was determined between EPS production and acid-bile tolerance (P < 0.05). EPS production possibly affects or is involved in acid-bile tolerance and aggregation of Lactobacillus spp., Lactococcus spp., and Pediococcus spp. strains and supports the potential of L. acidophilus Z1L strain as new probiotic
