    Polaron Induced Deformations in Carbon Nanotubes

    We compute for the first time full elastic deformations, as well as length, of self-trapped electronic states in carbon nanotubes of general radius and chirality, within the unifying framework of a recently introduced two field model for electromechanics of carbon nano-structures. We find that deformations are highly non monotonic in the chiral angle, whereas the length of the polaron is not.     Thermoelastic Damping in Micro- and Nano-Mechanical Systems

    The importance of thermoelastic damping as a fundamental dissipation mechanism for small-scale mechanical resonators is evaluated in light of recent efforts to design high-Q micrometer- and nanometer-scale electro-mechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS). The equations of linear thermoelasticity are used to give a simple derivation for thermoelastic damping of small flexural vibrations in thin beams. It is shown that Zener's well-known approximation by a Lorentzian with a single thermal relaxation time slightly deviates from the exact expression.Comment: 10 pages. Submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Tu Weiming, Liberal Education, and the Dialogue of the Humanities

    This chapter discusses aspects of the work of Tu Weiming in relation to the idea of a liberal education. It does this in the context of broader questions about the nature, problems, and possibilities of comparative philosophy. Dialogue emerges in Tu’s work both as a substantive topic and as integral to aspects of his approach to philosophy and to his commitment to the dissemination of Confucian thought. In spite of Tu’s obvious success in many respects, some problems with this engagement with and in dialogue are identified, and these in turn are related to his treatment of questions of language and translation – in particular to his somewhat negative attitude to philosophy’s linguistic turn. The comparison of Confucian approaches with the idea of a liberal education enables reconsideration of ideas that are central to education, and in so doing the discussion demonstrates the value of comparative approaches in the study of education

    Embracing the otherness of others: an approach for teacher educators to assuage social and political tribalism

    We live in a corrosively polarized climate where sharply divided beliefs about globalization and populism magnify existing biases. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that those who want to educate the next generation – teacher candidates – have been schooled in systems that focus on obedience, conformity, and docility. This breadcrumbs approach to education bears the danger of reproducing the status quo rather than changing it. This chapter explores the promises, perils, and provocations of curriculum regarding how we think about diversity and delineates a learning experience for pre-service teachers that allows them to identify, approach, and become the Other. The lived experience illuminates the cultural and experiential origins of their beliefs while reconciling the uncomfortable notion that bias is part of the human condition. In times where sharpened divisions intensify social and political tribalism it is essential to understand that it is the way one acts upon one’s biases that determines what kind of world one creates

    Antibiotic Switch therapy is defined by the switch of intravenous antibiotic therapy to oral form. This research aimed to learn about the relationship of switch therapy toward the value of wound healing, lenght of stay and the antibiotic expenditure. The data of this cross sectional study was collected from medical record and by direct investigation to patients for their macroscopis the wound healings value. T-test was used to compared the relationship of the patient wound healings value, lenght of stay and the antibiotic expenditure between the those with and accurate switch therapy and those without it. The result showed that there was no different of wound healing value between those groups of patients (P>0,1). On the other hand, lenght of stay and antibiotic expenditure of the patient with the accurate switch therapy was cuted on the patient with the accurate switch therapy. These indicated that accuracy of switch therapy will proceed a benefit outcome to the patient with appendicitis, especially to there lenght of stay and antibiotic expenditure as well

    ‘The Best and the Brightest’: Widening Participation and Social Justice in Contemporary English Social Work Education

    Social work education in England has a long track record of success in widening participation to disadvantaged student populations. However, more recently these successes have instead been cast as a burden that is negatively impacting on the calibre of students entering the profession. Alongside this reconceptualisation, new fast-track models of education have been introduced, providing a quicker and more financially supported a route of entry to the profession. This article critically examines the changing nature of widening participation in social work education and how fast-track social work programmes are perpetuating the inequalities that are inherent at all levels of the English educational system. This discussion is shown to have implications for widening participation policy agenda beyond social work. The concerns that are raised should be of interest to any other jurisdictions considering the possibility of a fast-track approach to social work education. A social justice approach-based bringing students together is proposed as an alternative and preferable model of social work education
