    Colour layering and colour constancy

    Loosely put, colour constancy for example occurs when you experience a partly shadowed wall to be uniformly coloured, or experience your favourite shirt to be the same colour both with and without sunglasses on. Controversy ensues when one seeks to interpret ā€˜experienceā€™ in these contexts, for evidence of a constant colour may be indicative a constant colour in the objective world, a judgement that a constant colour would be present were things thus and so, et cetera. My primary aim is to articulate a viable conception of Present Constancy, of what occurs when a constant colour is present in experience, despite the additional presence of some experienced colour variation (e.g., correlating to a change in illumination). My proposed conception involves experienced colour layering ā€“ experiencing one opaque colour through another transparent one ā€“ and in particular requires one of those experienced layers to remain constant while the other changes. The aim is not to propose this layering conception of colour constancy as the correct interpretation of all constancy cases, but rather to develop the conception enough to demonstrate how it could and plausibly should be applied to various cases, and the virtues it has over rivals. Its virtues include a seamless application to constancy cases involving variations in filters (e.g., sunglasses) and illuminants; its ability to accommodate experiences of partial colours and error-free interpretations of difficult cases; and its broad theoretical-neutrality, allowing it to be incorporated into numerous perceptual epistemologies and ontologies. If layered constancy is prevalent, as I suspect it is, then our experiential access to colours is critically nuanced: we have been plunged into a world of colour without being told that we will rarely, if ever, look to a location and experience just one of them

    Realistic Traffic Generation for Web Robots

    Critical to evaluating the capacity, scalability, and availability of web systems are realistic web traffic generators. Web traffic generation is a classic research problem, no generator accounts for the characteristics of web robots or crawlers that are now the dominant source of traffic to a web server. Administrators are thus unable to test, stress, and evaluate how their systems perform in the face of ever increasing levels of web robot traffic. To resolve this problem, this paper introduces a novel approach to generate synthetic web robot traffic with high fidelity. It generates traffic that accounts for both the temporal and behavioral qualities of robot traffic by statistical and Bayesian models that are fitted to the properties of robot traffic seen in web logs from North America and Europe. We evaluate our traffic generator by comparing the characteristics of generated traffic to those of the original data. We look at session arrival rates, inter-arrival times and session lengths, comparing and contrasting them between generated and real traffic. Finally, we show that our generated traffic affects cache performance similarly to actual traffic, using the common LRU and LFU eviction policies.Comment: 8 page

    APFIC Regional Workshop on "Mainstreaming Fisheries Co-management"

    This is the report of the APFIC regional workshop on "Mainstreaming fisheries co-management" held in Siem Reap, Cambodia from August 9-12, 2005 . The goal of the workshop was to provide a forum to learn from past experience and to promote devolved management of fisheries. Participants at the workshop had the opportunity to be exposed to a range of coastal and inland fisheries co-management interventions and the elaboration of approaches needed to make fisheries co-management a "mainstream" activity in developing countries. The objective of the workshop was to develop summary conclusions on the status of co-management in the region and provide some concrete recommendations for action towards mainstreaming fishery co-management in the Asia-Pacific region. The report contains the action plan and recommendations of the workshop. Many agencies (both governmental and non-governmental) are striving to improve the livelihoods of poor people that are dependent on aquatic resources by including these stakeholders in the planning and implementation of fisheries management. Many states have adopted decentralization as the way to implement future fisheries management, especially in developing countries, which often involves a partnership between government and the local communities, i.e. a co-management approach. The challenge is to find a way for co-management to become a mainstream practice of both government and non-government organizations and communities

    The steady pace of philosophy of colour

    I outline five issues in philosophy of colour that deserve greater attention and provide skeletal frameworks for how future work on these topics could be carried out. The issues are: colour and metaphilosophy (Ā§1), colour and artistic practice (Ā§2), colour and virtual/augmented reality (Ā§3), colour and imagination (Ā§4), and colour and the predictive mind (Ā§5). Some of these issues have been a focus of important recent works. Thus, colour conjoined with each of metaphilosophy, artistic practice and imagination have all been examined in at least a few recent publications ā€“ see below for references. It is clear, however, that these recent works are signals that there is much still to be done. By contrast, while at present there is a great deal of interest in the predictive mind, the intersection of colour and the predictive mind is vastly underexplored. This is despite the fact that the philosophy and science of colour are rather developed disciplines. Finally, while there have been some very important recent works on virtual and augmented reality, the significance of colour for these studies has yet to be examined. It is my hope that after reading this article readers are convinced not only that the philosophy of colour has a rich, recent history, but also a very bright future

    A Methodological Proposal for Programmed Quaker Practical Theology

    I propose that a practical theology research paradigm, utilizing both inductive empirical and deductive theological modalities, can facilitate confessional practical theological and ecclesiological research with the increased partnership and cooperation of congregations in programmed Friends meetings. And there is a need for such efforts. Jen Buck has provided case studies of unbalanced hybridity between Evangelical Friends theology/ ecclesiology and other theo-denominational paradigms.1 Her image of ā€œcolonization,ā€ used to describe the subordination of one doctrinal/cultural position by another, accurately describes the outcome of the uneven and contentious dialectic that is observed between the ā€œevangelicalā€ and the ā€œFriendsā€ identities within local and yearly meetings, with non-Quaker theological influences colonizing the ideological and identity-space left by a lack of familiarity of, or adherence to, or results in an active distrust of the Quaker distinctives by programmed Friends meetings

    Control oriented thermal modeling of lithium ion batteries

    Lithium ion batteries have been widely used in consumer electronics and are beginning to move to the forefront of the automotive and power grid industries. Lithium ion batteries are desirable in these applications because they are high energy density and high specific energy cells, while remaining inexpensive and lightweight. Safety is a concern in every consumer application; therefore, in order for lithium ion battery use to continue growing, advances in battery management systems are needed. Thermal management of lithium ion batteries is currently a critical issue. Applications are becoming more dependent on active liquid thermal management systems. The development of precise battery active liquid thermal management systems begins with an accurate temperature model applicable to control design. This work is focused on the development of a dynamic active liquid cooled battery cell thermal model through the coupling of a lumped energy balance and a single particle electrochemical heat generation model. A fluid channel is added to the bottom of the cell and an aluminum heat sink is added to the side of the cell. Results demonstrate that fluid temperature has more effect on the cell temperature than fluid mass flow rate. The dynamic model developed in this work has an order of 135 and; therefore, is not applicable to controller design. Linearization about an equilibrium trajectory and model order reduction via the Global Arnoldi Algorithm (GAA) is applied.     The Effects of Personal Characteristics and Religious Orientations on Identification with All of Humanity and Humanitarian Behaviors

    This research examined the effects of personal characteristics (empathy and authoritarianism) and religious orientations (Christian humanitarianism and religious fundamentalism) on identification with all humanity and resulting humanitarian behavior. This research also tested two hypothetical models (personality is primary, religion is primary) for the relationship between identification with all humanity and resulting humanitarian behavior. Two samples, consisting of 221 students and 158 adults, completed measures of authoritarianism, religious fundamentalism, dispositional empathy, Christian humanitarianism, identification with all humanity, and an assessment of humanitarian behaviors. As hypothesized, Christian humanitarianism and empathy were positively correlated with identification with all humanity and humanitarian behavior. Furthermore, authoritarianism and religious fundamentalism were negatively correlated with identification with all humanity and humanitarian behavior. Results also suggest that religious views may lead to the strengthening of specific personality characteristics and these, in turn, influence whether or not one identifies with all humanity and engages in humanitarian behaviors. Directions for future research are discussed as well as the implications of this research to real-world settings
