Investigation of diesel generator shaft and bearing failures
A shaft failure in a 634 kW diesel generator after 4000 hours of operation required investigation, especially when similar sets began to show signs of excessive bearing housing wear. The failure was found to be due to torsional fatigue caused by operation at an unforeseen resonant condition. The damage to the bearing housing of this type of set was also attributed to this behaviour. Replacement of the bearings and housings and redesign of the flexible coupling has been undertaken to prevent further failures. Modifications to design procedures are now being adopted to ensure similar problems do not occur in other existing or new machines

HI Narrow Line Absorption in Dark Clouds
We have used the Arecibo telescope to carry out an survey of 31 dark clouds
in the Taurus/Perseus region for narrow absorption features in HI (
21cm) and OH (1667 and 1665 MHz) emission. We detected HI narrow
self--absorption (HINSA) in 77% of the clouds that we observed. HINSA and OH
emission, observed simultaneously are remarkably well correlated. Spectrally,
they have the same nonthermal line width and the same line centroid velocity.
Spatially, they both peak at the optically--selected central position of each
cloud, and both fall off toward the cloud edges. Sources with clear HINSA
feature have also been observed in transitions of CO, \13co, \c18o, and CI.
HINSA exhibits better correlation with molecular tracers than with CI.
The line width of the absorption feature, together with analyses of the
relevant radiative transfer provide upper limits to the kinetic temperature of
the gas producing the HINSA. Some sources must have a temperature close to or
lower than 10 K. The correlation of column densities and line widths of HINSA
with those characteristics of molecular tracers suggest that a significant
fraction of the atomic hydrogen is located in the cold, well--shielded portions
of molecular clouds, and is mixed with the molecular gas.
The average number density ratio [HI]/[\h2] is . The
inferred HI density appears consistent with but is slightly higher than the
value expected in steady state equilibrium between formation of HI via cosmic
ray destruction of H and destruction via formation of H on grain
surfaces. The distribution and abundance of atomic hydrogen in molecular clouds
is a critical test of dark cloud chemistry and structure, including the issues

Risk, commercialism and social purpose: Repositioning the English housing association sector
Originally seen as the ‘third arm’ of UK housing policy, the independent, not-for-profit housing association sector had long been seen as effective in ‘filling the gap’ where the state or market were unable to provide for households in need. Since the 1980s in particular, successive governments had viewed housing associations in favourable terms as efficient, semi-autonomous social businesses, capable of leveraging significant private funding. By 2015, in contrast, central government had come to perceive the sector as inefficient, bureaucratic and wasteful of public subsidy. Making use of institutional theory, this paper considers this paradigm shift and examines the organisational responses to an increasingly challenging operating environment. By focusing, in particular, on large London housing associations, the paper analyses their strategic decision-making to address the opportunities and threats presented. The paper argues that in facing an era of minimal subsidy, low security and high risk, the 2015 reforms represent a critical juncture for the sector. Housing organisations face a stark dilemma about whether to continue a strategy of ‘profit for purpose’ or to embrace an unambiguously commercial ethos. The article contends that the trajectory of decision-making (although not unidirectional) leads ultimately towards an increased exposure to risk and vulnerability to changes in the housing market. More fundamentally, the attempt to reconcile social and commercial logics is likely to have wider consequences for the legitimacy of the sector
Conductance through Quantum Dots Studied by Finite Temperature DMRG
With the Finite temperature Density Matrix Renormalization Group method
(FT-DMRG), we depeloped a method to calculate thermo-dynamical quantities and
the conductance of a quantum dot system. Conductance is written by the local
density of states on the dot. The density of states is calculated with the
numerical analytic continuation from the thermal Green's function which is
obtained directly from the FT-DMRG. Typical Kondo behaviors in the quantum dot
system are observed conveniently by comparing the conductance with the magnetic
and charge susceptibilities: Coulomb oscillation peaks and the unitarity limit.
We discuss advantage of this method compared with others.Comment: 14 pages, 13 fiure
Chandra Observations and the Nature of the Anomalous Arms of NGC 4258 (M 106)
This paper presents high resolution X-ray observations with Chandra of NGC
4258 and infers the nature of the so called ``anomalous arms'' in this galaxy.
The anomalous arms dominate the X-ray image; diffuse X-ray emission from the
``plateaux'' regions, seen in radio and H imaging, is also found. X-ray
spectra have been obtained at various locations along the anomalous arms and
are well described by thermal (mekal) models with kT in the range 0.37 - 0.6
keV. The previously known kpc-scale radio jets are surrounded by cocoons of hot
X-ray emitting gas for the first 350 pc of their length. The radio jets, seen
in previous VLBA and VLA observations, propagate perpendicular to the compact
nuclear gas disk (imaged in water vapor maser emission). The angle between the
jets and the rotation axis of the galactic disk is 60. The jets shock
the normal interstellar gas along the first 350 pc of their length, causing the
hot, X-ray emitting cocoons noted above. At a height of z = 175 pc from the
disk plane, the jets exit the normal gas disk and then propagate though the low
density halo until they reach ``hot spots'' (at 870 pc and 1.7 kpc from the
nucleus), which are seen in radio, optical line and X-ray emission. These jets
must drive mass motions into the low density halo gas. This high velocity halo
gas impacts on the dense galactic gas disk and shock heats it along and around
a ``line of damage'', which is the projection of the jets onto the galactic gas
disk as viewed down the galaxy disk rotation axis. However, because NGC 4258 is
highly inclined ( = 64), the ``line of damage'' projects on the
sky in a different direction to the jets themselves. We calculate the expected
p.a. of the ``line of damage'' on the sky and find that it coincides with the

Formation of Structure in Snowfields: Penitentes, Suncups, and Dirt Cones
Penitentes and suncups are structures formed as snow melts, typically high in
the mountains. When the snow is dirty, dirt cones and other structures can form
instead. Building on previous field observations and experiments, this work
presents a theory of ablation morphologies, and the role of surface dirt in
determining the structures formed. The glaciological literature indicates that
sunlight, heating from air, and dirt all play a role in the formation of
structure on an ablating snow surface. The present work formulates a
mathematical model for the formation of ablation morphologies as a function of
measurable parameters. The dependence of ablation morphologies on weather
conditions and initial dirt thickness are studied, focusing on the initial
growth of perturbations away from a flat surface. We derive a single-parameter
expression for the melting rate as a function of dirt thickness, which agrees
well with a set of measurements by Driedger. An interesting result is the
prediction of a dirt-induced travelling instability for a range of parameters.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figure
Fine Scale Temperature Fluctuations in the the Orion Nebula and the t^2 Problem
We present a high spatial resolution map of the columnar electron temperature
(Tc) of a region to the south west of the Trapezium in the Orion Nebula. This
map was derived from Hubble Space Telescope images that isolated the primary
lines of HI for determination of the local extinction and of the OIII lines for
determination of Tc. Although there is no statistically significant variation
of Tc with distance from the dominant ionizing star theta1-Ori-C, we find small
scale variations in the plane of the sky down to a few arcseconds that are
compatible with the variations inferred from comparing the value of Te derived
from forbidden and recombination lines, commonly known as the t^2 problem. We
present other evidence for fine scale variations in conditions in the nebula,
these being variations in the surface brightness of the the nebula,
fluctuations in radial velocities, and ionization changes. From our Tc map and
other considerations we estimate that t^2=0.028 +-0.006 for the Orion nebula.
Shadowed regions behind clumps close to the ionization front can make a
significant contribution to the observed temperature fluctuations, but they
cannot account for the t^2 values inferred from several methods of temperature
determination. It is shown that an anomalous broadening of nebular emission
lines appears to have the same sense of correlation as the temperature
anomalies, although a causal link is not obvious.Comment: 53 pages, 13 images, many of the images have been downgraded to be

Association between congenital toxoplasmosis and preterm birth, low birthweight and small for gestational age birth.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between congenital toxoplasmosis and preterm birth, low birthweight and small for gestational age birth. DESIGN: Multicentre prospective cohort study. SETTING: Ten European centres offering prenatal screening for toxoplasmosis. POPULATION: Deliveries after 23 weeks of gestation in 386 women with singleton pregnancies who seroconverted to toxoplasma infection before 20 weeks of gestation. Deliveries after 36 weeks in 234 women who seroconverted at 20 weeks or later, and tested positive before 37 weeks. METHODS: Comparison of infected and uninfected births, adjusted for parity and country of birth. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Differences in gestational age at birth, birthweight and birthweight centile. RESULTS: Infected babies were born or delivered earlier than uninfected babies: the mean difference for seroconverters before 20 weeks was -5.4 days (95% CI: -1.4, -9.4), and at 20 weeks or more, -2.6 days (95% CI: -0.5, -4.7). Congenital infection was associated with an increased risk of preterm delivery when seroconversion occurred before 20 weeks (OR 4.71; 95% CI: 2.03, 10.9). No significant differences were detected for birthweight or birthweight centile. CONCLUSION: Babies with congenital toxoplasmosis were born earlier than uninfected babies but the mechanism leading to shorter length of gestation is unknown. Congenital infection could precipitate early delivery or prompt caesarean section or induction of delivery. We found no evidence for a significant association between congenital toxoplasmosis and reduced birthweight or small for gestational age birth
