The multicategory case of the sequential Bayesian pixel selection and estimation procedure

    Get PDF
A Bayesian technique for stratified proportion estimation and a sampling based on minimizing the mean squared error of this estimator were developed and tested on LANDSAT multispectral scanner data using the beta density function to model the prior distribution in the two-class case. An extention of this procedure to the k-class case is considered. A generalization of the beta function is shown to be a density function for the general case which allows the procedure to be extended

Spectral and spatial properties of solar microflares

    Get PDF
Solar microflares are studied using both hard ( 28 keV) and soft (3.5 to 8.0 keV) X-ray observations. The soft X-ray events have durations 3 m at 0.1x maximum intensity, and typically have similar rise and decay times. The fastest decay observed was 15 s (1/e). Soft and hard X-ray intensities are uncorrelated. The events are very compact, consistent with a projected area approximately 8 x 8 inches. They are normally not associated with H alpha or type 3 emissions and their time profiles suggest a thermal origin at the top of the chromosphere. If the primary energy release site is in the corona, an energy transfer agent consistent with the observations is a non-thermal proton beam

Space station integrated propulsion and fluid systems study

    Get PDF
The program study was performed in two tasks: Task 1 addressed propulsion systems and Task 2 addressed all fluid systems associated with the Space Station elements, which also included propulsion and pressurant systems. Program results indicated a substantial reduction in life cycle costs through integrating the oxygen/hydrogen propulsion system with the environmental control and life support system, and through supplying nitrogen in a cryogenic gaseous supercritical or subcritical liquid state. A water sensitivity analysis showed that increasing the food water content would substantially increase the amount of water available for propulsion use and in all cases, the implementation of the BOSCH CO2 reduction process would reduce overall life cycle costs to the station and minimize risk. An investigation of fluid systems and associated requirements revealed a delicate balance between the individual propulsion and fluid systems across work packages and a strong interdependence between all other fluid systems

    Endohedral Impurities in Carbon Nanotubes

A generalization of the Anderson model that includes pseudo-Jahn-Teller impurity coupling is proposed to describe distortions of an endohedral impurity in a carbon nanotube. Treating the distortion within mean-field theory, spontaneous axial symmetry breaking is found when the vibronic coupling strength g exceeds a critical value gc_c. The effective potential in the symmetry-broken state is found to have O(2) symmetry, in agreement with numerical calculations. For metallic zigzag nanotubes endohedrally-doped with transition metals in the dilute limit, the low-energy properties of the system may display two-channel Kondo behavior; however, strong vibronic coupling is seen to exponentially suppress the Kondo energy scale.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
